can anyone share their opinion of cedars and some of the surrounding southern california IM programs? Fellowship rate is impressive at cedars w/ ~67% doing fellowships. facilities are awesome. and nurses seemed very helpful and i really liked how there's like 4 pts to a nurse in each section of the wards. that said, i'm not sure how the doubling of # of categoricals from 20 to 40 via merging w/ west la VA has affected the training. seems like cards is top choice of many of residents.

how would current applicants rate cedars vs other los angeles programs like kaiser la, olive view, harbor, ucla, and usc?

dr. noah at cedars is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. was very impressed by him on interview day. seemed to really have an active interest in the program compared to other pds

dr. noah and ewing were really open interview day. interns seemed really happy too. some of the prelims kept talking about the hollywood factor at cedars which got annoying after awhile. prestige wise it doesn't compare to ucla but the residents seemed to be ok for fellowship. it definitely beats out olive view and usc.

I'm a UCLA student so I can give some examples of the program.

Its pretty friendly place because the interns are relaxed overall. ICU is the strong points, but the ward medicine months are Cedars are pretty poor (very few good teaching cases). combo w/ va has strengthened the program slightly but now the program has become almost too big and perhaps a little nameless.

Fellowship rates are not as high as 67%. I think i've heard they've fudged the numbers a little. I mean they even included someone who went to law school (and taht is not an IM FELLOWSHIP! lol

also, for the most competitive fellowships, it seems the cedars programs don't like to take their own residents from what the residents say. I'm specifically ref to Cards and GI. they have stronger pref for UCLA or other bigger name places all things being equal.

i thought you went to ucsd, not ucla, drkevin40. am i being mistaken by your previous posts?

Sorry I used my friend's SN to post some thoughts on the topic b/c don't have one of my own. 🙂

while this description is pretty accurate, some of the info is a little off. yes, the ICU experience is the strength of the program, but i wouldn't characterize the cedars wards experience as poor. plenty of bread n butter and zebras are seen, though not necessarily at as high a volume as a large academic institution (eg UCLA).

about half the residents in general go on to do fellowships, though last year's class had >75% residents go into a fellowship, including cedars cards and ucla/cedars gi (this doesn't include law school... not sure where that came from).
