Hi everyone, I really need some advice here. I've been doing a double degree for a while now, a B.S. in Biology and a B.A in Communication, but now I'm thinking of dropping my biology degree. The reason I'm thinking about dropping the biology major is because the final requirements include intensive lab courses and I really don't want to take these courses. These courses are also in person and I have serious issues accessing my school's campus right now because of COVID and my family's situation. I'm just pushing myself through them because there's so few left but I don't even know if it's worth it. Here's how many credits I have left to complete in each degree:
  • Biology:
    • 2 lab courses
    • Genetics
    • 14 credits of electives (most electives are worth 3 credits so this is about 5 classes)
  • Communication:
    • 5 credits (one class)
I understand it might seem like I'm complaining or getting burned out, and maybe I am, but I can't deny that it sounds really appealing to take this upcoming fall quarter to just finish one physics class, and one communication class and that's it. Do you think dropping my biology major will impact my chances of admission this cycle? I had my first interview this morning and they seemed excited/maybe impressed? about the combination of my degrees. What do I do??

You can't use Covid as an excuse to drop your bio degree. Covid will be here for quite a while, and you'll need to learn how to handle the new normal. Now putting Covid aside, as long as you have your pre-reqs for dental school then it really doesn't matter what degree you have. Just understand that at least 50% of the people you're competing against will most likely have biology degrees. I personally, have a Liberal Arts degree which is about the furtherest away you can get from dentistry. I'm now a 3rd year dental student, however it did take me 3 cycles to get accepted.

Thank you for the advice/input

Drop your communications major if you are going to drop anything. Because if you don't get in the first round you will be able to do research. Also if you had interviews, I am pretty sure you need to finish what you said in the application, but I may be wrong on that.

Thank you for the advice, I think looking at what I have left I’m just going to finish both degrees and make it work somehow. Thank you for your help though!

I think graduating with 2 majors is just one way to stick out from the crowd, especially if you have fit in other extracurriculars because it shows how well you manage your time and don't just focus on one thing. Genetics isn't all that bad and you're almost at the end so just stick it out. Hopefully you have some friends in those courses to make them more bearable.
