HIYA.
i am a British citizen but did my medical schooling not from uk.
having passed my usmles i will be starting my residency training in internal med.from coming june/july. i have intentions of doing fellowship in heme/onc.and then settling in UK.but i m very much confused about the fact that whether i will be eligible to practice in UK after my fellowship.or God forbid i have to take PLAB exams and start from the scratch (working as HO/SHO)...please guide me with ur advices or info if u have.....CHEERS.....

I think your worst scenario is the actual picture. If you graduated from a certain number of countries (ie. Aus/NZ/S.Africa etc) you'd be exempt from PLAB, but American training wouldn't translate. Contact Royal College of Physicians to get the specifics.

Dear PILL counter

fist of all thanks for ur precisous info...but still that doesnt solve my problem....i have tried to search royal college of physican website but couldnt get any thing from there ...and the website fo joint comitee of higher education says that ABIB certified dont need to take MRCP exams and are eligible for spcecialist registrar training ...thats it ..so still it is not very clear to me ..
i hope someone on this forum will have more information than me...
cheers ..waiting with fingers crossed..

Sorry wasn't helpful, but the problem is, not many people on these boards are that high up in training to know those fine details. Have you tried calling them directly?

I strongly suspect that you'll be OK to take up a post as a consultant providing you sit, and pass, the US board exams in your speciality. I know of a few US-trained ophthalmologists practicing in the UK. As suggested above, you should contact the Royal College of Physicians for definitive advice; searching their website is unlikely to turn up much information regarding your individual circumstances.

Hi Pill Counter, I believe there is a change in UK registration starting next year. (Check this link out)

It basically says that if you graduated from med school in those countries after Nov. 2003 you will be on the same boat as ALL other international grads. Only medical grads from EU countries are exempted from PLAB and can register unconditionally with GMC.

The whole coming-back-to-Europe thing has been discussed a few times. There never seems to be a crystal clear answer, although some people always tell anecdotes of US-trained physicians in Europe.

I've kinda made up my mind not to worry about it (there's so much other stuff to worry about, anyway). I mean, the rules could change 10 times before we're done.

To get your entire residency plus fellowship validated seems almost too good to be true, though, when you consider how long that would take in Europe.
