Hi,

I also received an interview invitation. For those who applied for Fall 2013 and got in, how was the interview?

Also, if you are currently in the MOT program at West Coast how is the program? (I know it just started 🙂 but maybe you already have a sense of the school.)

Thank you and good luck to those applying for Spring 2014

Hey,

I am thinking about applying to the fall 2015 program, I wanted to know how is the program so far? is it a good program? also is it hard to get in the program? I realize you had similar question before you got in please.🙂

I have been accepted into West Coast University's MOT program for the Fall 2014 cohort. Is anybody looking for a roommate?

Hey,

Did you find a roommate yet? was it hard finding someone ? do you have any advice? what is the cost of apartment out there please?

Hi Cici817, I am a native of LA. To give you an idea of price. My parents rent a 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment in the area for 1,200.

Thank you for the information!🙂 Hey are you in the west coast OT program? how is it if you are? do you have any advice ? is it hard to get in please?

I know this school is accredited now, but I'm a little nervous about the "for profit" aspect of it. I'm afraid that some schools won't accept the classes, especially if I go back for a doctorate (which is my goal). Am I the only one with this fear? Or, that like other for profits they may go bankrupt or disappear altogether. I fear having a degree from a college that may not be around in 10 years. 🙁

what you mean for profit?? Keep in mind that they had to get accredited first through AOTA which been around forever. So with that being said they can not go down that easy because we have a middle man. AOTA is like our insurance legally outside of the school. Now if they was not accredited then I would been scared.

There's a major differences between for profit and non profit schools. Most schools are non profit, but those that you see schools that you see being advertised on tv are for profits. I'm not worried about whether the masters degree would be good, but more so if other schools would accept the classes taken at West Coast U (even with it being aota's approved) once I decide to continue my education. I know several people in California who have gotten degrees from for profit schools, but can't transfer the credits to Cal States or UC's.
My current dillema is that I've gotten into a school, but it's extremely expensive and in another state. My hope is that I won't have any problems with schools like USC accepting the credits from West Coast, but the reality is that they don't always approve them. My safest bet at this point would probably be sending them an email to ask. Id love to stay in Cali, but if I can't pursue a doctorate with a masters degree from West Coast it may not be worth it.

I emailed USC OTD department and am waiting for an answer to this. I asked if they would accept WCU's MSOT. Hopefully they will get back to me before I go to the info session at WCU.

Perfect! If you find out please let me know. I didn't rush to do so because I was accepted to an out of state school. However, I would still consider applying to WCU, if they would accept it.

@DaisyMama If you go to the WCU info session can you please let me know how many applicants they usually get per application period and how many student they accept. As well as the average GPA's of the incoming classes.. And, if they defer applicants to the next cohort. Thanks in advance!

Sure, I'm going tomorrow morning, so I'll let you know!

@Futureot87 , I emailed and called and am still waiting for a response, but when I find out, I'll let you know.

What school were you accepted into?

@DaisyMama can you also let me know if they mention how many applicants they have already accepted for the May 1st deadline. Whether they are rolling admissions and the general outline of the interview. Thank you! And good luck tomorrow.

@futureOTsj , hey, I just got back from the info session at WCU. To answer your questions:
how many applicants they usually get per application period: they didn't answer this because it's such a new program, they keep getting more and more applicatnts.
how many student they accept: 28 per cohort, twice a year
As well as the average GPA's of the incoming classes: didn't answer this either-they said it varies because they stronly base their acceptance of students on the prerequisite GPA and the interview. (they said they don't use your undergrad or grad GPA, only the prerequisite GPA to base their decision on!)
And, if they defer applicants to the next cohort: Yes, they said: They will either accept you, waitlist you, waitlist you with admission to the next/upcoming cohort, deny you with the ability to reapply, or deny you without the ability to reapply.
They also said they require an out of state fieldwork assignment (12 weeks) so to factor that cost into the program as well.
Hope this helps!

Omg! @DaisyMama This was so helpful thank you!!! How did you like the program.. or the feel for the program that they discussed there? I was trying to get in contact with previous cohorts and all I was able to find were people in social media posting how amazing their cohort and classes are.. Did they mention whether people include a personal statement in their application? As for the fieldwork, I have seen students go to Vegas for fieldworks but do you know what the other states may be?

@futureOTsj I actually LOVED the program and it is my top choice right now! It's very student centered and hands-on with small class sizes. They didn't say this, but the way I see it is it's almost like they saw the existing programs out there and made their program better, with all the best parts of the other programs and none of the bad parts. They don't require the GRE and the director actually said that research has shown that there's no correlation between the GRE and success in the program...they are progressive and not bogged down by years and years of tradition and they can make their program better because of it.

As far as fieldwork, they didn't say where it had to be but my impression is that you can choose where you go.

Thanks for your input @DaisyMama! When do you plan on submitting your application? And, if I may ask, can you please share your stats? Do you know anything about their interview process?

Any proof on how a for profit university creates barriers for someone in the workforce?? The program is fully accredited by AOTA and isn't due for a review for another seven years. Forget OT how about all the nurses who have graduated from this school and have since found jobs? I'd rather attend a school that's hands on and that offers a solid education rather than one of the many non profit research based schools where I'm going to be sitting and reading fluffy theories all day and have absolutely no idea what I'm doing once I'm out in the field. Field work sites are already commenting on how well prepared OT students are from this school and on another note how they avoid taking students from certain schools that are popular here in CA.

MOT4ME have you finally decided what hick town you'll be living in once you have your MOT degree because your teeny weeny meager occupational salary will only afford you a shack in the middle of no mans land? With the amount of income related threads you've started it's amazing you didn't pursue a career in investment banking. Maybe you should start your own for profit university in the future--rake in that dough so you can finally fulfill your dream of moving to the big apple.

All people interested should be aware West Coast is a FOR PROFIT university. I have massive reservations about that, and I think people should investigate that prior to making any decisions.
Yes, I am well aware of the fact that it is for-profit and I initially had reservations, however, they are FULLY accredited and after graduation, students will be eligible to sit for the board exam. I think it's funny that they are actually cheaper than the other two big programs here in southern Cali, and yet they are for-profit. After going to the info session, I really hope I get in to their program. If people are hesitant because of the fact that they are for-profit, I understand-and it will benefit me because it will mean less competition to get into the program! 😉 But for myself, after going through my second year applying to southern Cali schools I am at the point where I will do whatever it takes to become an OT-which meant giving WCU a chance, and finding out that I love it!

I can definitely relate to those that are wary of this school. I actually have a family member that is attending a different campus for a different program and I was totally against it because of this for-profit issue, but my opinion has totally changed and if you are someone who really wants to be an OT, you can go through the process (info session, research) yourself and see if it's worth it for you to look into this school.

@futureOTsj I'm going to start the application process as soon as I get everything in order. Initially, you fill out the app, pay the application fee and then they email you supplimental documents to submit . But I actually graduated a long time ago and passed the 10 year limit on the English/Communication and Social Science/Humanities prerequisites! But WCU is so cool-they allow you to take a test to show proficiency in those prerequisites. So, I just have to take 3 CLEP exams (@ $80 each) and then my application will be complete.

My prerequisite GPA is 3.5---and that's it! That's all they look at, as well as the interview! My graduate GPA is 3.8, but it won't matter.

The interview process wasn't really covered in detail, but the current students who gave us the tour said that it wasn't intimidating at all and they make you feel comfortable. They said they asked some general OT questions and ethics questions as well as having you write an essay while you are there.

Thanks again @DaisyMama! Since you're in the LA area, are you near the school? How is traffic getting to this area?

Oh my, the traffic is really bad! It's off the 101 and that freeway is perpetually congested. I actually live 28 miles away but in traffic, it can take 1-2 hours to get home! But I'll just have to deal with it for two years. Actually, they said the last 12 weeks of the program, you don't even go to campus every day because that is when you are on your fieldwork out of state. So that's 3 months less that you'll be in traffic-unless you live near the campus and won't have to worry about traffic.

Oh wow! Did the current students mention anything about the day to day schedule? I'm hoping it's not during the peak traffic hours but, I guess in LA it's always traffic.. 😵

The director and students said the schedule is 8:00 or 9:00 am until 5:00 pm!

Hi, I'm from Michigan State University and just turned in everything today to apply to the program. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what my chances would be of me getting in based on my GPA etc. I have a 3.5 pre-requisite GPA as well as a 3.5 overall GPA. I also have 200 observation hours in two different settings.

I doubt the students that have been accepted are still looking at this thread, but if you are out there, could you please POST YOUR STATS? Basically just your pre-requisite GPA...since that is all they care about anyway. Thanks!!!

Hi,
I am curious if anyone knows if you have the option of deferring to a later cohort?
For instance if you get accepted to the fall cohort, but want to defer to the spring cohort?

Umm I believe you can. But you would have to talk to the department to see their view point on it. Did you already get accept for the new cohort?

Hey,

Did anyone apply for the up coming cohort yet? I have a interview coming up. I wanted some guides please?🙂

Also, does anyone know anyone that's already in the program, that maybe can give us light? please.

Hi Cici,

When is your interview? Is it in person or via Skype. And may I ask what your stats are?

@cici88 Congrats on getting an interview! What are your stats and when did you apply? Read my previous post about what the students told me at the info session. At the interview, basically, they try to get to know you and aren't intimidating. They ask why you chose OT, ask you some ethical questions, and how you describe OT to other people (your elevator speech). Good Luck!!

Hi! Yes, I applied and I have an interview this week. I'm in northern california so I don't think I had the option of a skype interview.. I haven't heard of anything from other students besides those that chimed in here.. Do you know anything about the interview?

@asdfghjerica Are you interviewing as well?

I hope I will be when I apply by the September 1st deadline!
But to be honest, your stats got me a little worried. I hope to have at least a 3.5 prerequisite GPA by Sept 1. I could retake the C grade that's holding me down but then I'd have to wait til next year to apply 🙁
