inorganic chemistry same as basic chemistry?

Hey all. I've noticed that a lot of schools list a year of inorganic and organic chemistry under their requirements for matriculation. Do they mean basic chemistry when they say inorganic chemistry? I didn't realize that inorganic chemistry was a premed requirement. Thanks all!

Well the implication of the name is that it isn't organic, so I'd contend that General Chemistry is Inorganic Chemistry. It just seems to be a way to separate all the courses, because inorganic and/or General Chemistry is often just referred to as "Chemistry", but at a higher learning level it would be beneficial for understanding what exactly the class material is.

It all depends on your school. Inorganic chemistry at some schools is essentially just general chemistry. You really just have to look at a course syllabus in order to tell. At other schools inorganic chemistry is an upper level course usually just for chemistry majors/minors that gives a much more advanced treatment of bonding theory, metal complexes, transition metal chemistry, etc.

Yea, inorganic chemistry is a 300 level chemistry course for chem/biochem majors at my school which was why I was so confused. Thanks all!

1 year of freshman chemistry & 1 year of organic chemistry.

Freshman chemistry is called "general" or "inorganic."

Don't confuse the freshman inorganic chemistry with the upper-level inorganic chemistry course that has the freshman course as a preqrequisite.
