What is the concensus about communicating with programs that aren't number one choices but are high on your list. Our dean suggests that telling a program that you're "very interested" or "ranking them highly" will communicate that you aren't ranking them number one, and may actually hurt you. I'm finding it hard not to correspond at all with my #2 and #3 programs, which are both very strong programs.

What do you guys think?

during my interview at a place which i would rank high in my list i they "taught" me about how the match works. they said that in feb after interviews are done, if they are in my top 3 programs, i should have one of my mentors (who they know) call the PD and let them know that they are in my top 3 programs. then they rank you higher.

at another program, i was told that the level of interest you show a program is scored and used for ranking purposes.

ask your letter writers to call the PD/chairman at your second and third choice programs. at an interview the chair said that he makes 1 call for his students applying to surgery. so you might need to get two mentors to make one call each.

now is the time to be aggressive about demonstrating your interest. yes, they will know they are not your number one if you don't specifically tell them they are, but if they know they are in the top 3, then they know its not bulls**t as when you say vague statements such as "i'm ranking you at the top of my list".

Interesting . . . thanks for the reply.

On the matter of these interest letters...do you usually send them to the program director & the chair or just the PD? Additionally, do most folks send them to their top 3 programs or so...any help on this matter would be appreciated.

Thanks.😉

I sent them to my top four--PD's and some interviewers, but I only did this because I am a lemming.

There are a lot of differences between programs as to how they approach the match. They do not all wait for applicant letters and chair phone calls before they make their lists. It's probably fair to say that some of them do wait, but there are lots of programs (some that I interviewed at) that make their lists immediately after interviews, especially the larger academic ones--some even said this at the interview. At the Univ of Mich they went so far as to discourage sending thank you notes, emails and phone calls because they said it won't change anything and they would not respond in kind. Remember, when you receive a 'glowing' letter from a program proclaiming your greatness, does it/should it change your rank list? No. True, I sent out letters or emails to my top programs and I have received letters, emails and phone calls but not one of them has changed my list--during one of the phone calls the PD even said that he didn't want me to tell him where I was ranking them, just that I was, in fact, ranking them. If I were a PD the only thing that would influence me is when an applicant actually states that my program is number one--and think about this for a minute; if you are not a highly competitive applicant for a program, or there are lots of other applicants they would rather have, then a call from God won't make a difference. You will not jump from the middle of a programs rank list to the top because you told them you were in their top three. I sure wouldn't believe anything but 'number one' if I were a PD.

jc7721,
can you say which program this was?
