I am a senior in dental school and recently I really started liking Ortho. But unfortunately I know my grades arent very good. My NDBE Part 1 is 86% and im studying for Part 2. My class raking is in the top 15. I hadnt planned on doing any research since initially I just wanted to be a Gen Dentist, but now Im interested in doing ortho, pls can anyone let me know what I need to do from here on to get into a ortho prog. Thanks 🙂

Hello KS1708,
For Ortho...your part 1 scores appear to be a bit low. However, part 1 scores are only one component of the admission criteria that ortho program directors look at. Research experience is a big plus. If possible try to link up with some ortho residents or ortho faculty in your school. Your chances do considerably increase if you can publish in a peer reviewed journal or do a poster presentation at a conference/professional meeting. From my experience, I can say that admission criteria varies by program. While some focus a lot more on part 1 scores or class ranking, there are a few that look for research, leadership, etc. Hope this info helps. If you have any specific questions, do not hesitate to contact me. Good luck!!!.

you should probably start gathering application materials NOW. get supplemental applications from the programs, register with PASS and MATCH, get your letters of recommendation, personal statement, CV. it's a long process.

Your NBPT 1 is lower then some applicants but dont be discouraged to apply. The best advice this late in the game is to get your PASS application done as soon as possible. Look up all the schools your interested in applying to and print out any secondary applications. Find at least 3 faculty, one in orthodontics, that know you well and will write you a good recommendation. Finally, sign up for the match. You will need to do all of this quickly. I believe PASS will send out the first round applications the first week of july and any one who has been through this process knows how time consuming it is. Do you know where you will apply? You stated you are top 15 in your class, out of how many? Any research you can enter will be a big plus as someone stated earlier. If you have any other questions, just ask.
Best of luck,
