Alright, I need to break up the monotony in this forum -- I can't believe we're almost done with internship! I still remember June of last year I was sooo nervous. I cruised most of 4th year and then it hit me -- I don't know jack! And what made matters worse, I got my internship schedule and my very first block was ICU month. Yikes! Why didn't I do a critical care month as a 4th year. I'm such an idiot! I'd have nightmares about me being the only one at a code and nurses yelling "doctor, quick! what do we do?!" haha.

And look at us now. We're learned so much this year...and we have yet so much more to learn in this process. Very humbling guys!

So how's internship going? Hectic? Chill? Not so bad?

Anybody else excited about finally starting ophtho? I am. Can't freakin wait. 😀

Anybody start studying for OKAPs yet? I joke I joke!

no one will disagree that this year of slavery...... I mean internship , has gone by so far, in a sense its a good thing bec it had so many traumatic experiences ( like having someone code and die literally 15 minutes into your first call ever as an intern!!!).

although it pains me to say it, but I actually appreciate all the new things I have learned - and also have discovered about myself- during this year.

but I def cannot wait till next year where I will no longer have to stay in house for call, or ever work another weekend !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I miss two day weekends so baaaaad it is not even funny.

home call = no post-call day

but yeah, i'm excited to start ophthalmology, but scared about being a PGY-2 intern...the fact that i've been on electives (aka vacation) for the past few months of my transitional year make me feel like a 4th year anxious about starting residency, again.

Oh man, I'm the exact opposite. Why oh why did I decide to do a medicine pre-lim? Finishing off 2 weeks of CCU and then it's off for another 2 weeks of night float to end the intern year. I'm worried about being burnt out for PGY-2.

Also, while home call is nice, I totally agree it's not as great as everyone makes it out to be. Seeing 3 patients overnight, getting no sleep and working a full day the next is no fun.

Despite all this, still super excited to be moving on!

Don't be that excited about home call. Your lifestyle will actually depend on where you are doing your training. If you at a busy academic center or covering multiple hospitals overnight you'd much rather prefer in-house call where you get to leave the next morning. Seeing a patient at 11 pm and another one at 3 am and have a 40 patient clinic waiting for you the next day is not pretty, let me tell you. On the other hand, if you are at a small community hospital and you get called in once every 5 call nights or so, home call is awesome...

You're absolutely right. Home call can blow.

But I can't help but notice the negativity in this forum as of late. First, it's home call can actually suck real bad so don't get too excited about finishing intern year.

Or the doom and gloom in the Young Ophthalmologist re: the crappy job market and about retina guys starting at 150K and living in studio apts.

If I didn't absolutely love this field and trust that I'll be a baller one day, I'd be having some SERIOUS doubts right now. Like bigtime.

Dr Hospitalist ( AKA dump all unwanted, messy, stupid cases on me and let me consult every service on the face of earth for a simple cold) thinks that the field of ophthalmology is worse than hospitalist just because he saw some posts of some money hungry ppl write on this forum.

I do not understand how some ppl equate making a lot of money with having a good specialty. neurosurgeons make a ton of mony but I sure as hell wouldnt wanna have thier life style ( AKA no life style).

All I want to say is that ophthalmology will always be the great field it is, and by the time we graduate, if medicine is ( so obamafied and so horrible ) at least we would have a good field under our belts.

for the record, I have never called Opthalmology in my entire lifetime, and do not plan on it, if I can avoid it.
I highly respect all fields of Medicine.
Fortunately, in our system, we have 75% excellent Opthalmologists, that would never ever turn down a consult, or exhibit problems when asking for advice.

Opthalmologists are not even close to as important, as you try and exhibit here, not even close. It is a nice laugh though, thanks.
Hospitalist daily regimen includes life and death, not how many cataract surgeries you can cram in a day, to take an early vacation.
That is just not the correct attitude. We try to consult as little as possible. What in the world sort of consult can a Hospitalist possibly 'mess up' for an eye doc anyways?
I never stated that the field of Opthalmology is 'worse' than Hospitalist Medicine, that is absurdity. It was started by annoying individuals, that wanted to fight and argue and scrap, that led to the demise of that particular thread.
Unfortunate people cannot sense the feeling of camaraderie, that is desperately missing from Medicine nowadays, in times like this.... this is truly unfortunate...
Yes, if you chase money, you will be disappointed.... this is absolutely correct.
