Hey all,

Are there any EM docs out there that specialized in international EM, do contract work through military/foreign service, do locum tenens internationally, or have done relief work with doctors without borders or something like that?

Really interested in the variety of experiences available for international work, and would be cool to talk to someone that has done it. Thanks!

Your government foreign service docs likely won't talk to you about it. Most of the US State Department docs are family practice, but they do hire emergency physicians. CIA hires docs (including ED docs) for both DC-area jobs as well as overseas. There are also contract positions available with government entities. All of these are on a need-to-know basis, so you probably won't get a reply. If you're interested in this kind of work, you have to do your own research.

The military docs likely can chime in.

10:25 Around 100 stab victims in one weekend? Did I hear that right? Crazy... great place to train though

How does one apply to work in South Africa? Were you hired directly by the hospital or by the provincial government?

OMG. I want to train here. Do they take like EM residents for 6 months of trauma experience??

EM residents from the US can come for anywhere from to 2 weeks to 2 months.

Its hard to do more than that although it does happen occasionally.

First step is registering with the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa) and getting a medical license.

Afterwards you are typically hired by the specific hospital whenever a job opening occurs.
