I was wondering if anyone knows of cool international externships or jobs? i definitely want to spend some time at clinics abroad while in vet school (i was accepted into IL entering in aug. 09). im really interested in farmer/herder assistance type stuff.

i also think i want to work abroad for a year or two after graduating, im planning on LA practice. does anyone know of opportunities? ive started doing a little research but any help would be amazing!

Definitely check out RAVS

They do both local and international stuff in rural or imporverished communities:

Their schedule looks very neat! They fill up very quickly though, but they are still a very good research for even just q and a about related opportunities. http://www.ruralareavet.org/schedule.php

There is also Vets without Borders, but I don't know as much about that organization in terms of work/study/volunteer things.

Vet schools in the UK, Australia and New Zealand have a tradition of sending 3rd-5th year students out to everyday vet clinics to "see practice," so they are used to having students contacting them. You could probably just look up clinics in those countries online and ask them directly.

The UK has more intensive sheep rearing than Australasia, so if you want to do lambing or more individual sheep medicine, that's probably where you want to go.

New Zealand has a large dairy industry. Most is done using extensive, pasture-based systems, but there is a move on the South Island mostly, to put more intensive systems in place.
