Any internationals out there, I feel like I'm all alone. Any luck so far?
I did pretty well - 32 with 3.73 at a tough undergrad (ave. gpa is pretty low), and pretty good extracurriculars and a decent story how I came here and stuff - BUT I've been collecting rejection letters like it's my job. I feel like my status is as sure as a fart in a net and I'm hoping there are others who will wallow with me in my misery.

Um, I am a bit shocked that you are getting rejections. What school do you go to? What types of letters do you think you received? How clearly did you present your interests in research. Yes, research - the unspoken prerequisite. Being international can actually be a plus. You have to talk it up, dress it up, make them want it. Your stats are not bad. They are not stellar, but they certainly are not bad at all. Rejection should not be an issue for you. You need to evaluate what you might have done wrong because it should not go like this at all. Have you interviewed at any places? Feel free to private me.

i'm international with a 33 MCAT and a 3.85 GPA. i've actually had lots of luck so far. 7 acceptances, only 1 rejection and no waitlists (waiting to hear from many non-rolling). when did you get your application in? i know for a fact that some schools fill up the number of spots that they offer to international students fairly quickly. i know this because my one rejection was from Ohio State. they sent me an interview invite, scheduled my interview, and then 3 days before the interview was to happen, they called and cancelled it. they told me that they filled all of their international spots. i was really upset. i demanded that they refund my application fee... and they did. they also paid for travel expenses that i could not get refunded.

International here, with a 34Q and 3.95GPA. Applied to around 14 schools, not a single acceptance yet.

I have also been quite lucky. You go boy/girl! This is what being international is all about. You need to realize that you've actually got an extra layer that makes you a bit more appealing to med schools. I am surprised Ohio state accepts internationals. I thout it was a state school! Very classy of them to refund your application fee. Congratulations on the 7 acceptances.

interviews? Non-rolling schools?

Seven interviews, 2 at non-rolling schools (TX - will find out on Monday!!!) and 5 others.

To be fair, I have only been on 2, (Vanderbilt and Maryland) and I scheduled the remaining 3 for after Feb 1st because that's when I find out about my number 1 choice.

All in all, I am happy with how things turned out, (as long as I get into UTSW) but I will say turn you stuff in early. I took the August MCAT, and I think that hurt me big time!

i'm a girl.
one thing that i think has been essential in my being accepted is that when asked about my country vs. america, i never take one side or the other. i speak about pros and cons to both, and point out that in the end, i will be able to apply the pros of both places to my medical practice.
and yes... most state schools besides those in CA accept international students. BUT, they make you pay full tuition and more.
so, i am not sad that i didn't interview at Ohio State. i have been accepted at some schools (Vanderbilt, for example) where they will help international students out financially, just as they would americans.

Hailin' from Holland.
I've been waitlisted at one place. Some of my apps were in early, others pretty late. Could have planned my approach a little better I guess.
Still waiting to even hear about interviews from about 11, but it's getting pretty late and I imagine there's not much hope left.

I'm from Canada. Don't despair, it's still early at some places. One of my friends is from Holland... You guys have a pretty messed up med school admissions system. She was telling me that it worked sort of like a lottery. She didn't get in unfortunately. Good luck to you! :luck: :luck: :luck:

JDAD, How did your UTSW interview go? Did they give any indication about an acceptance?

The interview went well, the best I have ever had, but I still have no idea whether I will be accepted.

Are you international?

Good to know it went well. Yup, I am international too. Good luck. I am sure you will make it to SWMED.

I wish we weren't, but for the application process, we are labeled with "foreign" status.

F-1 visas suck!

Hi Guys,
Is there any webiste that has a listing of American Med Schools that accept International Students, or do i have to goto each schools website and figure it out.

Thx.

Hey Guys,
canadians are not really internationals.UYou are their neighbors, us schools are still more welcoming to you than to the rest of us.Im from macedonia, and omar, i suggest u go to your pre med advisor, thats what i did and she gave me a copy of the schools that accept internationals, im not sure if there is a website.

Hello All,

I am new to this forum, but i am glad to have found it...looking for something like this for a while. I am from India. I have def. felt alone in this process. The Pre-Med Dean at my Ugrad told me that in his 30 yrs of experience, i was like the 2nd intl student he worked with. Neways, i actually applied to only 10 schools (small no. as compared to 25!!!) went for 3 out of 5 interviews and got 2 acceptances (BU, SUNY Upstate) and one waitlist (Wake Forest). So far BU is my top choice. Any of you going for BU???

ALso, how does the whole Visa issue work out when we start applying for residency?

BU sounds great I'd love to go there.
Visa issues - that's an interesting one. I imagine it'll have to be a work visa, so I don't know if we'll have to both apply and get into a residency program and apply and hope to get a work visa from the gov't. They slashed the amount they're giving out this year by two thirds. That would put quite a dent in the whole plan

BU is pretty harsh with the financial stuff regarding internationals, yes? How do you plan to fund BU?

What excatly do you mean by "harsh"? I do not know their policies towards internationals. All i have looked at the several different companies they have listed on their website for intl. student funding - http://www.bumc.bu.edu/Dept/Content.aspx?DepartmentID=160&PageID=9210

Do you have any other information. Would appreciate you sharing it.

Well, you can only get loans. Loan, loans and loans. That kinda sucks, don't you think? Besides, the loans are from private sources, which typically means a slightly higher interest rate. Let me tell you this if you didn't realize it already: BU is one of the most expensive medical schools.

'ello 'ello,
I guess I am joining an elite few internationals. I ve gotten into Vandy and am waiting on Emory, Wash U and U vermont. Wash U and U vermont dont offer finaid so I wouldnt go there ( I am, however , applying for an outside scholarship ( check it out www.jackkentcooke.org) which covers upto 50k for all schooling costs. I applied MD/PhD so money isnt an issue really because of the stipend. So anyone going to Vandy's second look ?

hey dude good luck going to columbia and the dutch gov't is picking up the tab. pretty sweet. gotta love socialism. any one know about columbia's Ellis Felloswhip?

hey im international too
interviewed at 8 places. got into my first choice and a couple others.
i know its tough for us intl folks, but oh well, gotta keep trying.

I'm also international, and I'm curious: how many of you guys are permanent residents (ie. have green cards)?

I've had 5 interviews and way too many waitlists....

People with greencards are NOT considered international students. For the purpose of med school apps, permanent resident = US citizen. They don't have to go through the crap International students go through.

I have had three interviews so far, but my stats are not stellar. So, I'm happy with those. I just finished interviewing (August MCAT), and I haven't heard post-interview yet.

Gluck everyone! :luck:
