I say "yea," because at least you know the person you're going to meet is single/looking for someone.

Also, Tinder exists now. I'm engaged, but it seems to be a ridiculously easy way to meet people wherever you are.

Yay.

Internet dating, especially for us 20somethings, is the popular way to go. Hell, less and less people are doing it the traditional way now. Especially if you're in a smaller city, where it's next to impossible to meet an actual, worthy person.

Despite that TV show catfish scaring people, it's really not too bad. 😛
 
Yes.

Just use common sense when meeting people off the internet (meet in a public location, don't get drunk enough to make bad decisions, etc.)
 
One of my buddies/classmates has used Tinder here and there. It's led to some casual/short-term rendezvous with minimal effort - which is exactly what he wanted.

I live with my GF so I don't have a dog in this fight, but online dating makes a ton of sense to me. It wades past a lot of the bull**** and makes the best use of your time. If you're the kind of person that likes the bar prowl, then by all means, continue to do that. On the other hand, Tinder/OkCupid/whatever will let you screen people to some degree and already get you past step 1, which might save you some time and hassle. Internet dating has a stigma for being for "nerds" or "losers," but to me it seems to be a pretty damn efficient, low-effort way to meet people.

Like roommates? Must make things awkward sometimes. Don't know how you suppress it.
 
I've done it. It seems just statistical common sense that leaving your options to only classmates and people at Starbucks is limiting your pool of choices. Met a couple amazing guys...met a few weird sad ones over the past 3 years. I think there is less return for guys, but obviously it's working for some people.

I turned off my profile this year because...well, the crop is just...mostly very wilted and unappealing. Takes too much effort/time investment to even spot anything you'd be interested in, and then the work of driving and going out to actually meet someone you may or may not like is...well, a lot of work. And then if you're iffy about it, you kind of have to meet them again just to make sure there is no chemistry...eh.

I do know a couple people who used Tindr more for fling type action.

Can be either, but it's definitely a lot more casual than other dating sites.


I did online dating before I started seeing my current GF, and it was a blast so long as you didn't have super high expectations. You get great stories from some of the dates as there are a significant number of whackadoodles on those sites. There are some quality people but outnumbered by the crazies. And it's GREAT interview practice - all about charming someone in a limited timeframe. I wonder if I could sell my GF on that.....I need to practice for residency interviews, I'm gonna go on a few dates is that cool?

Right. I haven't used it but I've heard it like flashes pics of the person and you decide yes or no? I love the concept of being able to see the pics and then decide if you want to know more...but, not my pic all over the place. Bzzz.

More like if you wanna chat, but yeah. A nice pair of shades and dressing differently makes for a pretty good disguise.

Exactly. I just don't want to interact with lounge people...otherwise, I don't mind if Allo spans the entire human experience of med school and beyond.

I just downloaded it to check it out. I'm not sure what to think. It links directly with your Facebook, which I'm not a fan of. You can set your parameters so that there's specific targets of age and distance. You can also include whether you want your search to include males, females, or both. Then, it becomes an episode of "hot or not" with clicking the big green check or the big red x. Kind of fun to go through people and rate them, but I could see it getting me into huge trouble, seeing as how I have a girlfriend 😛

Nice idea if people actually use it to find new friends in new locations. Since it links with your Facebook, it tells you about similar likes and mutual friends.

I couldn't figure out a way to sign on it without using Facebook. It seems as if the mutual "likes" and mutual friends is a fairly integral part of the program.

While I wouldn't say half the class was on it, a good number were, especially those looking to find someone outside of medicine, since it can be difficult to get out of the med school bubble.
 
Online dating is great for guys who have an awesome resume but lack swagger.

It utilizes the skills that most med students have already developed: marketing yourself and communicating effectively over written words. You just need to top off a cool/interesting description about yourself and all of your fascinating hobbies with an attractive profile pic and a line about you being in med school and you're golden.

I'm not sure about the guys, but I see girls from my class pop up on OKC all the time--- I'd estimate about half (or a little more) of the single girls in my class have been or are currently on it.
 
Is it weird I dated someone from Tinder? It was a rebound relationship that only lasted a few months but nonetheless it exceeded my expectations. Looking back, I think it's such a shallow way to meet someone when you're drunk and in a bar. Hot? Nope. Next. Next. Next. Oh, this one's cute. Whattup, girl?

I'm not following. Are you saying that it's just as superficial as meeting in a bar...or that meeting in a bar is even more superficial? Either way...I don't think either medium is "superficial"...the problem is what type of people/goals particular mediums attract.

I would think using it is better than a bar. At least you can filter effectively and not waste eachother's time.
