Praise be to God it's over. My year wasn't even that rough, but I ended with 2 months straight of Medicine floor service. You know, the usual. My particular team was on the "Liver Floor" in a hospital that has a penchant for liver transplants, so on top of making sure everyone had a good bowel regimen and calling for OHS records, every admission seemed to require a diagnostic paracentesis with pigtail placement for large volume removal. And Lactulose QID. And explaining to family members why a full code in a person with a MELD of 38 wouldn't go well.
I actually spent one night on call seriously working out the math on whether I could go back to my past life, working as an occupational therapist making ~55K, and still pay off my debt.
Either way, it's over, and I'm so much better for it. Parts of the year sucked (as above) and parts were great. One year down, and I still don't regret medicine. Can't wait to be an OR noobie. For the second straight year: patients - be afraid.
