University of Miami / Jackson Memorial has sent out invites. The interview day is January 10th; the same as many of the other programs who have sent out interviews so far. I talked to the program coordinator today and she said that if enough other applicants had conflicts they could have a backup interview date on January 6th. So if anybody else out there heard from Miami, contact their coordinator!

Can anyone provide information on UAB? How is their volume? Do they offer additional structural/peripheral year?
 
Would like some advice.
Choosing between two programs with almost similar volume, CHIP, AMI Shock, Peripheral, Structural etc. one has mid to top tier name, the other mid tier name.
Both have nice people to work with, but the mid tier program are all nice vs just some and all who would love to work with you, and has a lot of shock which I am interested in; Not famous in rest of country but it is in the area. I love living in both places.
What would you do?
Question is does name truly matter, if both train you to be almost similar for independent practice?

Both have nice people to work with, but the mid tier program are all nice vs just some and all who would love to work with you, and has a lot of shock which I am interested in; Not famous in rest of country but it is in the area. I love living in both places.

Question is does name truly matter, if both train you to be almost similar for independent practice?

So reading your post it seems as if you'd prefer the mid tier program, so go there.

Having said that, in general, all things being equal, the place with a better name would probably help more in your job search. But I honestly don't think a mid tier vs a mid-top tier makes all that much of a difference. Now, if you went to a powerhouse program then yea it would be better than a small community program.

Would definitely go with your gut feeling - that is probably the only advantage of physically going to an interview, most cath labs/hospitals etc are the same. Going to a top/better name with faculty who aren't nice and therefore may not let you do anything or just make training miserable sounds like a waste of time. If you have to contend with angry faculty on top of the other rigors of learning IC, I think your overall year will be less productive.

When you finally do go for a job and you come from a top place that maybe let you learn even slightly less than a lower tier program, and you develop some complications or require more supervision, that name isn't going to help you.

All that said - your last line assumes both will train you the same (I'm willing to contend with angry attendings for excellent training) so I would go with the better name.
