Interview 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations for getting interview from Mount Sinai!

May I ask when you sent out your applications? I didn't get anything from the programs in New York. Very nervous now😕 I sent out on 9-20

Thanks,

Yuxin

Congratulations to sequela! You're amazing to get so many invitations. Do you mind to tell me your background? Thanks, Yuxin

Not to take away that anything that sequela (or anyone else on here) has done, but I think probably has less to do with amazing and more to do with having an application that is complete, or nearly so.

Any luck with UCLA even downloading your file. UCLA is the only one that has not downloaded my file yet.😕

hey guys...congrats on all your interviews. here is what i have going on so far...i'm not sure if this info is helpful to anyone??? for what it's worth:

submitted application (which was completet w LORs, PS and transcripts) on 9/21.

Stanford
Brigham
Yale
Mt. Sinai
Cedars Sinai
BU-not an invite, just that they will be giving out interviews starting mid-Oct.

All invites came within a two day period, about two work days after submission. It's been quiet since.

I try not to read too much into anything.

ps I only applied to the west coast and northeast. Philly too.

good luck!!!!!!!!

Hey sequela how many schools did you apply to? Inquiring minds want to know.😀

Nope. UCLA and Oregon are the last two places that I applied to that have yet to download anything.

Hey sequela how many schools did you apply to? Inquiring minds want to know.😀

I applied to 22 schools which I think is totally excessive and I now regret since scheduling is a bit of a nightmare and traveling to interviews will certainly take its toll. I got kinda nervous at the end and just started checking off boxes.

My rational is this: most my programs are in major cities with more than one program, I thought I'd give them all a try because I don't have enough data to discriminate between them.

Plus, it may serve me well to see how different programs function.

Thanks Yuxin. I don't think I'm off the charts in terms of my application. I'm certainly no md/phd or psf, just someone who's done well in med school and has demonstrated my love for pathology.

As it has been mentioned, I think it has to do with the fact that my application was complete when I submitted. I personally think that Sept. is really early and I'm under the impression that some programs don't even get the show on the road until Oct. So, people like me probably get a closer glance since there is more documentation to sift through.

Who knows...it all seems so random.

To answer your Mt Sinai question: submitted 9/21...I haven't heard anything else from NYC.

I'm curious to know why a lot of other schools have invited me to interview while Brigham has yet to acknowledge me. My app has been complete for about 3 weeks. (Note: I am very happy that I've received interviews from my other top choices...so play nice, please.🙂 )

Maybe the people who have invites (Moodydoc, UCSFbound, sequela) can enlighten me. Does coming from a middle-tier school make a difference to Brigham? This is the only aspect of my app that I consider weak.

I dunno what's going on man. Last year we interviewed a variety of people from different backgrounds and a variety of schools.

I submitted my app on 9/6 and the final lor was uploaded on 9/18... hopefully they will not keep you waiting for long...

I think it is ironic how I have heard from many of the programs at the top of my list while I have not heard anything from some of my "safer" programs.... 😕

It seems that after the inital blitz of invites, they are begining to slow down... just feeds my OCD to check my email, voice-mail, and snail mail.

😱

How many people applied to path last year? It seems like most schools have about 70 people interview and take 7 people according to FREIDA.

I wouldn't read too much into it. The school I am at probably isn't even considered "middle tier". In fact. I would wager "bottom tier" to be more accurate. I am complete with the exception of 1 LOR from my PSF program director. Whats funny is that I havent received an invite from my PSF program yet, while a poster on here claims to have already gotten an interview. I should be ****ting my pants right now and initially I was, but I've kinda reached the point to where I just dont care. It will come- and your Brigham invite will also, just hang in there. 👍

I don't know why I got an invite so early...who knows how they do it over there. It probably has more to do with their "system" of going through apps than your candidacy. In other words, you'll hear from them when you do.

I certainly would not be concerned at this point.

I don't know about "tiers". As far as rank, I guess my med school in the (lower) top 30 on US World Report or whatever that rank thing is called. At a certain point one would hope that silly things like that don't factor in as much.

I submitted on september 7th. My app is only missing one LOR from a medicine doc.

Hey all,
Does anyone know how UCSF typically schedules interviews, for those of you who have already been invited this year or interviewed there in previous years? Do they only interview on certain days of the week, or pretty much any day between mid-October and mid-January?
(I want to schedule UCSF around my Stanford interview.)
Thanks!
And I suppose I should contribute, as others have...🙂
I have invites to Brigham, BID, JHU, Stanford, and Utah.

Tetrad, I heard that each year about 400-450 people apply to US path programs, with about 300-350 applying to each of the most popular programs. As you said, those programs typically invite about 80, interview 60-70, and fill about 5-10 spots.

Just got my final LOR submitted 9/28. In the words of the ERAS secretary, I'm now a "complete person." HA!

Two more interviews by email on 9/29:

Emory
UAB

Hello all... MCV/VCU by mail... in strong words they stated thier policy was that the applicant must sit for all the sections of the Boards or they would not rank you.....

MUSC said this too. they said that you must sit for step 2 ck AND cs before the rank lists go in. They did not say you had to pass it though so I'm assuming you could show that you have taken it and it would be okay.
I hope i hear from MCV/ VCU soon. I haven't checked the mail yet today...

Hello all... MCV/VCU by mail
Man- there wasn't one in my mail yesterday. I hope it's still in the mail. probably there with UNC's invite.🙄

The mail carrier probably hates me for continually badgering him:

anencephalic: "Surely you must have an invite from UNC for me?"
mail carrier: "No, I most certainly don't. And stop calling me surely."😀

man i would love to know what makes these programs tick...
we'll see what this week brings. I want an interview somewhere that i can actually drive!

MGH today by ERAS and email.

You get the boob prize if you DONT match at UCSF and have the handle 'UCSFbound'.....

plus dude you did a post soph at SF AND an away rotation at MSKCC?! You arent just a gunner, you are constructing a weapon of mass destruction! hardcore.

MGH by email and eras. Also Wake Forest by email....

Hi guys!

I am an IMG

So far:
GWU, NIH, Tufts, U. Pitt, WU, Wisconsin, BIDMC, Case Western.

Might it be that not all IMG’s are dumb? 🙂

TsepsiK

oh by the way, i've gotten all of them by email and the occasional one or two programs have used both email and eras.

the only one that used eras only was cedars sinai.

Pleasantly surprised when I came home today. 🙂

VCU/MCV by snail mail (free hotel)

MUSC by email (free hotel)
UTSW by email
Vanderbilt by email
Wake Forest by email (free hotel)

Is anyone else here applying in the South? I'm hoping to compare notes as the interview season progresses.

By the way, has anyone heard from Duke yet?

I'm applying in the South. Still no pathology letters uploaded to ERAS 😡

MUSC, UT-Knoxville, UAB all by e-mail in the past few days

Hurry up and wait. Isn't that the name of the game?

Heard from a Pedi attending who had recently transferred that UT-Knoxville was a good place for raising a family and the med center had a cosmopolitan/international feel (relative to the rest of the city, that is.) She didn't know much about the pathology program, though.

Yeah, I'll have to ask for a favor from the SDN gods if I somehow manage to match someplace else, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

You know how hard it is to find non-rounding/non-SOAP-note writing electives during fourth year? I filled my schedule with Rad-Onc, Radiology, Anesthesia, Opthalmology (no touch my patients!), Allergy (no show for 4 weeks), and Transplant surgery (take as much time to interview as you want). I still had two more months to fill so I hooked up some outside surg path electives. Can't say they wont help, but by no means did I intend for them to be a ploy in my construction of a WMD for future hemepath applications  . If I had my wish I would be sitting on my ass the entire fourth year drinking Guinness, smoking my hookah, and watching Comedy Central, but alas, some of our dreams go unfulfilled.

I wouldnt mind being at UCSF myself right about now, living out near Pacific Heights or in one of those new condos near the financial district with the Whole Foods and Starbucks on the first floor. Sipping on cocktails at the ol' XYZ bar, maybe smoozing at house parties on weekends in Noe Valley..... not bad, good luck on that!

Yeah, they built all those new lofts and condos and shiat in SoMA, running a pretty penny right now. Every area of SF is becoming gentrified, making it harder and harder to find "up and coming neighborhoods" with cheap property/rent. Definitely gonna take more than a residents salary to get in on anything there. Might have to supplement my income by tending bar out in the Marina. I lived in Cole Valley and I have to say that the neighborhood is somewhat underrated. We were right smack in the middle of things with the MUNI a few streets over to take you downtown or to Ocean Beach, plenty of places to eat/drink right around the corner, GG Park nearby, and like a 5-10 minute walk to the Haight for more good times, and not to mention the fog line literally breaks up just east of UC, so while leaving work in the afternoon you would leave the fog on "the hill" and literally walk into sunlight like 5 minutes away. There were some really impressive houses up near Tank Hill too with spectacular views that were selling for mad loot, but I guess if you invest wisely and work for a while making a good wage they would be attainable. Just dont count on owning anything for a while I guess.

If you want some advice, tons of shiat I should have done as a resident/intern....every city has below market listings be they rental OR condo/housing. These below market listings for poor people, like residents, can be considerable. I was in a nice apartment for 1800/mo and my neighbor was in same floorplan at below market for 700/mo. I was the sucker. Oh and we were both making the same $/year...Do the research. Dont be too proud to accept food stamps or public assistance of any sort. Also dont be afraid to look into getting welfare/unemployment for the months between med school and residency...

Get over the mentality that one day you wont be poor, for NOW you will officially be below the poverty line for SF, reap the benefits of that. Sign up for every damn poor person program that dipshiat Gary Newsom throws out there, use the system or trust me, it will use you.

If someone in the city beuracracy give you crap about this, contact a lawyer, interesting SF has TONS of free legal advice for poor peeps like you (I should know these fookin anklebiting SOB JD's have written letters to my biz in the past)

.... listen to me now and believe me later.

PS- I used to stay in penthouse condo on Cathedral Hill off Gough with a 360 degree 17 story wrap around view of the city..there are some killer places no doubt.

Hi All,

I'm new to this board. Just wanted to introduce myself. I attend school in So. Cal. I applied to 12 places, and have gotten 3 interviews so far:
Stanford: email
Cedars-Sinai: email
Univ. of Texas, Houston: email and ERAS

UCLA just today downloaded my application. I have no idea where I want to go like some of you 🙂

ucla finally downloaded my stuff too.

Received interviews from:
U Iowa
U Wisc
U Mich

Now I have to prepare for the interview. Anyone else having problems coming up with a succinct, but effective answer to "tell me about yourself."

Best wishes to everyone on interviews!

Howdy path folks...new to this site, but good stuff.

Heard from UCSF, Stanford, JHU, Brigham, Yale, Mich, UTSW. No luck with MGH, U Wash, or any of the rest of Cali yet (I still have visions of surfing on my lunch break in San Diego).

Good luck to ya'll

Villin: I also received an invitation from UPMC. I replied on 9/28 last Thursday, but have not heard from them since then.... don't know why... I'm wondering if u had received any emails afterwards? Like a confirmation? thanks.

A couple of places took a few days to get back to me (via email). So after like two days, I usually sent a follow up email saying something like "I just want to make sure that you received an email I sent on ___ regarding ____".
Or just call them.

thank UCSFbound, I'm sending one now.
