Interview 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Gak! Rejected from Duke.😱

Sorry to hear about Duke, I would have thought they would wait until after deans letter to actually reject people... hey but at least you have several other interviews.. right. Keep your head up (at least it is less money for traveling) trying to find that silver lining..

Sorry to hear about Duke, also. You still have Yale among others, right? 🙂

I got one finally!!!!!!!!! :0)
Sorry to hear about the rejection letter. :0(

Thanks for the support gang!😀

Duke was definitely in my top 10. Ah well. A few more NC schools to hear from as of yet.

Anyone else out there with positive news?

top 10? then you have at least 9 other very excellent options. 🙂

Hello everyone,

First day here; I'm a PGY4 from philly who actually left anesthesia in my senior year and am reapplying for pathology. It's a long story about how I got to that point but suffice it to say it is hard to objectively evaluate one's situation when one is immersed in it.

Anencephalic, I got rejected from Duke as well. It's the only correspondence I've gotten from any program, and it's rather disheartening. I applied to 10 programs on September 1st and another 10 on the 23rd; all I've gotten so far is a "we'll get back to you starting mid-October" from BU.

Not a peep from GWU, GU, Emory, or any of the Philly/Jersey programs.

What does this lead to?.....PARANOIA😀 ....is my brutally honest personal statement over the top?? Are PD's afraid I'll quit and leave them shortstaffed?

Fun, isn't it? (NOT). I graduated from Temple Med in '03, my Step 1 score was 228, I have an MD license in PA, my clinicals were good (a mixture of P's and HP's) and still no interviews.

I'd like to stay in Philly but haven't heard anything; I may be new but anybody got any words of encouragement?

Thanks!

Hey Vaderize,

Sorry to hear about your situation and Duke. I hope things go well and welcome to the 2007 path match! 🙂

(At least you found out now and not 10-20 yrs down the road! my friend did 4yrs of ER before starting Derm.)

Thanks Villin!

I appreciate the welcome to the match, I'm just hoping at this point to be in it; I know it's still early and that some programs don't get started until at least mid-October.

Of the ten I applied to last week, UPMC and GW were included. It seems like they took at least three weeks to send out invitations to those who applied on 9/1; of the programs I applied to on 9/1, I haven't heard from JHU or Emory, but I still think it's too early to sweat it (or so I have been told by a former PD from a philly program).

I guess I'm just impatient. My wife thinks I'm worrying for no reason😳 .

I keep re-reading my personal statement in the bathroom.....

Rejected from Duke also!!:meanie:

Oh well, confirmation bias tells me I would have been miserable there anyway.

i cannot tell you how many path residents i have met that had started out in another residency. even one person who had done a little bit of two residencies!!!! i think it is the most highly "switched to" field in medicine. especially among surgeons and the like. it makes perfect sense b/c most people don't know what (let alone how cool) pathology is. i have had this very conversation with many attendoings, at more than one institution. pathologists know better than anyone that most people don't know what they do all day long and that med school is not sufficient exposure to it (this is why we will all inevitably be asked "why pathology" at our interviews). having said that, these programs will understand where you are coming from in terms of your having discovering a little latter in the game.

if anything i think you would strike me as a mature and responsible person who stuck with a residency for as long as you could (ie gave it a really really fair chance) and then had the balls to say, "yeah i'm almost done and i'll be making good cash in the very near future but my heart's not in it" and then decide to start this process all over again!!! i think it's courageous and makes up for whatever lack of self-awareness (if that was even the case) you might have suffered from early in your career.

i think you will do fine, just like the rest of us. i guess the most important thing, however, is that someone in your situation will have the people in your current program speak well of you...if that were not the case, then it might a little more problematic.

i guess i would suggest that you apply to more programs if you don't hear something shortly after NOV1st (i assume that will be when most every program will kick it in high gear). this might be a good time to re-assess the situation.

oh and by the way, i haven't heard a thing from philly and i have already been granted interviews by several other places. so, i take that to mean that they are moving slower than others rather than assume that i am not qualified or desirable. i would think the same with regard to you too.

good luck. i think you're awesome. 🙂

Thank you...I really, really appreciate the encouragement.

Yeah, it was tough, but I ultimately left with the full support of my department. My PD wrote me a letter, as did two other faculty members; my PD is a bigwig at Temple, he chairs the hospital's GME committee, and I maintained friendly relations with everyone there during the entire process of deciding to move on. Also, I waited until the new residents had gotten on their feet before resigning so that they wouldn't be left in a lurch. The new guys work in pairs for the first two months and are given much more responsibility starting Sept 1st, so I wanted to wait until they were settled before leaving.

Bottom line.....some of my time in anesthesia was rough but I left on a high note (at least I think so😛 )...they even got me a cake on my last day and threw a goodbye party.

So all in all, I need to be more patient. It really does help though, to hear your encouragement and know that the Philly programs seem to be a bit slow this year.

Thanks again, man🙂 .....if anybody is curious about how to go about making a switch please let me know and I'll be happy to talk to you.

Hey Vaderize,

Thanks and welcome. As I'm finding out, we're at the beginning of interview season...no news yet is probably good news. I'm also waiting on Emory and a couple of Pennsylvania programs. We'll see. Congrats on making a decision to pursue Path!

this is all good. very good. it will reflect very well on your character and commitment to your program...a teamplayer.

i think you're actually a very impressive candidate in this respect. if this type of conduct does not convey that then i don't know what in the world would.

i think that as you start to articulate your story during interviews you'll find that your story, as it relates to your own professional and personal development, will become a selling point. it will be a reason why you would be a wonderful addition to any program.

Gak! Rejected from Duke.😱

What do these rejection letters look like? Do they outright reject you or say they are considering you maybe for later? Not to rub salt in your wounds but I want to know what a letter like that looks like because I might get one!:scared:

It was actually quite polite.

Dear Mr. Anencephalic,

Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to review your application for a residency position in Pathology at insert institution of choice. At this time, we write to inform you that we are unable to invite you for an interview.

We wish you success this interview season and throughout your career.

Yeah, it was a good cake with thick frosting, the way I like it:laugh:

Anencephalic, that's exactly the rejection letter I got. I was on vacation at the time, and I was checking my email at the one point I had internet access. I saw the message from Duke and my first thought was "I'm the MAN!!".

I almost grabbed my family and yelled "Interview from DUKE".

Then I opened the email.

Glad I kept my mouth shut.....😀

He he.....

I think I over-applied (17). Now I need to figure out where I REALLY want to interview. Maybe 1/2-2/3, if the money doesn't run out.

Dude! No wonder you got rejected.

Change your name.
Anencephalic?

I thought it was just your name here on SDN.
It is weird, plus not to mention it suggests you don't have a brain. I don't most pathology programs want the brainless...

:meanie:

Most rejections are random. Sure there is some vague board cut off at some places... but what are you going to do.
Good luck

My first interview invite! Northwestern, via email and ERAS msg. Dinner night before too. Ah, there's nothing like the first... 😉

A serious congrats to everyone on their interview invites. After an early mad rush, things have slowed significantly for me. I applied to eight programs. So far...

It has been mentioned, but for everyone waiting on UVA, from everything I have heard while rotating here they will be sending out their first batch of invites around the third week of October.

Hi all

Hi [ V ],
Umaryland will not be taking new residents in 2007. Atleast that is what they told me.

Hey all. First post on this Forum, but seeing how I'm head down the same 'Path' as yall, I thought I'd jump in here.

I too came to uncover the jewel that is Pathology late in the game. I was all set to apply to Anesthesiology, and then I did an AP rotation and LOVED IT!

I submitted my application to 20 Path programs about 1 week ago. I've gotten 3 interviews: UAB, UT Knoxville, and Orlando Regional. I've not gotten any rejections yet, but I totally see them coming (cough Duke cough).

Programs I most want to hear from: MUSC 😍 and Vanderbilt 😍

Is it just me or is it so cool how professional some programs are? i.e. MUSC had DL'd my application within 2 hours of the time I submitted it, and sent me an informative email about the process and timeline of how decisions are made. On top of that their website is is very thorough and gives one a good idea about the program. And as I was reading earlier, they not only give you a reservation the night before, but there is also a dinner involved. I'm sure MUSC is not the only program that acts this way; anyone have a good impression of the professionalism of another program?

humm did Maryland give a reason for not accepting new residents? very strange

Interesting.....that would explain why they haven't downloaded my stuff. Good to know-thanks, amygdala_path.

On the freida website for certain schools under resident evaluation it says yes for OSCE as part of the evaluation of residents. How can they do an OSCE when path residents don't interview patients? Also what is a portfolio system and a 360 degree evaluation?

yes, it is good to know. However they should not have had their name in the ERAS program list, coz people are wasting money over the app. Howard, for instance was not in the list this year.
Good luck.

Man, I'm so HAPPY I don't have to do the OSCE!!

I grandfathered out of that 😀

My class was the year that they did it as a practice run, but it didn't count.

Ah, no Maryland eh? I should've read a little more carefully, as I wasted the money to apply....

call from UT-Southwestern program director this afternoon
Iowa by e-mail yesterday

Man this is getting crazy. There's no way I'll be able to interview at all of these places. Still no word from: UT-Memphis, Indiana, Stanford, UVA, U of Chicago, Rush, Arkansas, UNC, or Wake Forest

veo1's tally:
UAB (1-2 nights hotel)
Northwestern (dinner night before)
UT-Knoxville
MUSC (hotel, dinner)
Emory
Yale
Iowa ($225 in travel expenses +hotel)
UT-Southwestern

OK, so I was a little off on my third week of October prediction. UVA via ERAS and email. SWEET!😀

congrats to everyone on the invites
