Being as neurotic as I am:

I have received 4 invites of 26 programs that have responded.
This does not include my home institution that will interview me, but they have yet to send out invites.
This also does not include my away rotation, which may interview me, but they also have not sent out invites.

I applied to about 100 programs, so hopefully I will get a good number of interviews.

=)

HE HE HE

Somebody needs a pat on the back.

Question laxman:

I saw the stats you posted in another forum: 243 on Step 1, mostly passes, maybe one honors, no derm research, no aoa......

So what's your secret on getting all of these interviews?

Just a reminder that stats alone do not make the candidate. In general, the med school, the derm dept at the med school, and personal ties can all bear on interviews and matching.

hey guys...

first off, i'd like to say that it's nice to know that there are others in the same boat as i am in terms of dealing with this madness. i also want to congratulate those who have received invites. well done.

what i'd like to know is this...how many interviews would be considered good/safe at this point? i know there are some who have 4 or 5 (maybe even more), and there are those who have yet to hear back from programs. i think a lot may have to do with timing too.

so far, i have 2 invites...(although one is from a program that i rotated at) and one waitlist. i'm thankful for these, that is for sure...however, the rejections have started to pile up over the past week and so it makes me wonder how the next few weeks will unfold.

any thoughts on what would be considered to be "in the running"? of course, all it takes is one in theory...but perhaps those who have gone through this painful process could chime in?
thanks...and gluck to everyone!

Am I the only loser with no invites, but a buttload of rejections

Izzy

Dude hang in there, I have lurked and know your stats are good, have faith, your interviews are coming.

I don't know about you tools, but I'm up to 17 invites. NYU just offered me a spot, no interview required. I plan to get another 30-40 interviews, and I plan to go on all of them, mostly because I enjoying talking to people in small rooms, and also I want to F the rest of you out of interviews. Then, I won't even rank the derm programs, and on match day I'll watch from my tower as their collective dreams die as one of the potentially greatest dermatologists of all time pisses on their subspecialty.

It is at this point I will enter podiatry school and make you all regret the day you were born!! I will be the best foot doctor in the land and make you all wish that you had the guts to deal with calcaneal spurs all day.

Am I the only loser with no invites, but a buttload of rejections

Izzy

i basically have no invites. i mean, i have 1 invite, but it is from a school i have ties to (and have applied to before and not matched at) so doesn't really count in my book.

thanks dermhopefully and sore eye assess

I appreciate that, good to know there is a great bunch of colleages out there genuinely well wishing for one another

If there was some one like that, even remotely close to sore eye assess' jerkass vignette, I would have no problem going to jail for murdering said hypothetical person

😀

Yup, at several great places. I am not too worried about prelims....just the elusive derm invites.

Well, there's ~70 more elusive bastards still out there. Keep your trousers on, or whatever that saying is. I'll do the same.

Actually, I may take them off, but only for comfort. If I'm not gonna be getting any derm interviews, I prefer to do it in my underwear.

This gives me an idea:

We should play "strip interview." Every time you get an interview you have to remove an article of clothing. This way when we go to our interviews we can show a lot of skin, which will remind the PD's why we're there in the first place!

Ok, Jeroboam and laxman, lets see those pants fall.

Skinky,

I thought of you as a skink. That weird lizard/snake creature from australia with the long tail. Please tell me this is the case with you. If so, you will be able to shed your tail and escape difficult situations, like intractable warts and rectal eczema (not sure if this actually exists).

This could be a huge selling point for you. I say play it up to the fullest!

Hey all,

This is my first post to this forum (I am an MSIII who will likely be applying derm next year and am deathly nervous/contemplating a year off HHMI/Doris Duke). As a way to overcome my anxiety by exposure I have been crunching some matching outcomes numbers.

Skinky had a very good question: how many interviews?

Well according to the reports from 2009, 2007, and 2006 it takes about 8+ interviews to have a great chance and 10+ to be confident.

Applicants receiving 8+ interviews represented the top 38.6, 39.1, and 41.6% of applicants respectively for years 2009, 2007, an 2006. These applicants enjoyed match rates of 93.1, 90.6, and 91.7%, respectively, assuming they rated all interviews contiguously.

For 10+ interviews, these applicants were the top 28.7, 27.4, and 29.3% of derm hopefuls and enjoyed a match rates of 96.6, 95.5, and 93.1% respectively (again using matching outcomes data from the 2009, 2007, and 2006 reports and in that order).

Last year applicants with 4 and 5 interviews matched 61 and 77% of the time respectively.

Hope this helps all! I am happy to contribute to the forum and want to wish you all the best of luck!

All high passes.
One non-derm research.
One case-report.

Letters from derm faculty.
Top 20 institution.

THIS.
Great job!

I wonder what happened to all the people who were doing the 1-2 year "indentured servitude" derm research fellowships after intern year s/p not matching during 4th year or intern year. Of the 20+ fellows I've met during interviews/AAD/research circuit, unfortunately I didn't see any of their names on the match list last year (maybe nobody posted their names).

Makes me wonder if the fellowships are worth it.

🙁 OK, so I have zero invites too, and now I have 9 rejections, NINE!! I applied to over 90 programs, but the rejections are pouring in. I have no derm program at my school, and i know that i am supposed to wait until thanksgiving, but i'm really starting to freak out. I made 244/99 step 1, 255/99 step 2, (so i know I'm not a stellar candidate there, but average at least) honors in most of my rotations, AOA, 1 non derm publication, 1 derm publication, 3 derm publications submitted, derm research....what else could i possibly have done?? I am trying to stay positive...it only takes one, right?

The fellowships are indeed worth it. I posted a link somewhere in this Derm forum a couple months ago which went on to state that the match rate for those completing pre-residency fellowships was on the order of 90%.

Although I am only one person with one opinion, I think getting into derm comes down to this:
Once you've met a minimum level of requirements, such as:
#1.Board score>240
#2.Some publications

These pre-residency fellowships are of most value to people who have #1, but are deficient in #2.

Its all about who you know and how you interact with faculty and residents. The last thing faculty want is someone who is not motivated, combative, or arrogant. If you can be laid back at the right times, and a go getter at the right times, the above will get you in somewhere.

Seems like you have a lot going for your application. The only other things left to top off your app are volunteer experiences, home school status (top 40?), letters of rec, connections, and a decent personal statement. Were these in order? Any good aways. It could be just an unlucky start too. 😕

your biggest problem is highlighted above. I am in same boat. I predict 7+ interviews for you. I like your stats. remember, 70 progs still to offer.

Yeah, and my school is definitly not top 40, which I think is really the key problem. I have lots of volunteer experience, great letters from one of the top programs, and one program chair, and well rounded extracurricular activities. I haven't heard from anywhere I rotated at, so I guess I have those three to hope for. Two should be guaranteed interviews at least, and the other one is the top program, so i can only hope 🙂
Good luck to all of us and I am hoping for an unlucky start. I'd be super happy with 7+, actually, I'd be happy with one right now 😉

I've been lurking for a while now and am still confused as to how to read everyone's posts for interviews and rejections -- my apologies, I am sure it is much simpler than I think it is.

In the lists everyone is making, the lists above "Rejections" means places the person has an interview? I'd be happy to share my list (if I ever get anything other than a rejection!). :-/ Thanks for bearing with my silly question.

And congrats to everyone who has interviews so far. I'm another one who has completed a residency in another discipline. I have been done and practicing for a while and am trying for a second residency in derm. I've seen a couple of others around here and know the odds are against me in spite of good scores, recs, grades, etc.

SIU told me I'm not a special snowflake.

However, the program director wants to meet me at future derm gatherings. I can't wait to seek her out and shake her hand.

Frankenberry,

The "Rejections" section above are those places that sent an email or snailmail to a person saying they were denied an interview.

The section could also be renamed "sore eye asses interview season to date," but that might be confusing to newbies.

So when looking at a person's list, it goes: Places people HAVE interviews (or were offered interviews); then rejections, is that right? Some people have the same place listed under rejections and interviews. So I am confused. 😕 Or maybe just stressed.

the reason why a program can be listed under both reject, interview, AND even waitlist groups...is because this is just a running tab of what applicants have received collectively. all you really know at a given point in time is the place where the author of each post either received an interview or rejection/waitlist...and that is, or course, if he/she decides to explicitly bold this information or say it in the title of the post...

makes sense? and yes...stressful indeed. 😱

I finally get to post one 1st!

I am also one of those that this is the second residency...so far no hits...I have heard from 3 of the 10. I know there is an excellent pool out there as I am reading. Also, the government sponsors 4 years of residency and after that, there is no more funding. I know this makes odds tougher, but I have seen people match in derm as a second residency before, so I guess if a program wants a candidate enough, then it still can be done.

I don't mean to give a negative vibe...I just know that as with all, it is a tough process.

Best of luck to each of us.

Anybody have a good estimate of the average number of interviews received at this point in time in the season?

1? 2? 3? 4? 5? 6? 7+?

I would estimate we are about 25-30% of schools have sent out at least 1 round of interviews? So maybe 2 or 3?

Hi dermward,

I'm curious, do you have a derm department where you did your residency and/or where you practiced? I have seen a number of attendings who did a double residency, with 90% of them probably doing the residency in the same hospital as the previous residency. Good luck!

My Med School Alma Mater does have a strong derm program, but I have been away for several years so one can only wonder how strong the link would be at this time. The place where I did my first residency does not have a derm dept. unfortunately. But thanks for trying to look for a positive link! I appreciate it. We will see what unfolds. Best to you as well.

By this date last year I had 6. Some people definitely had more. I don't think this information is really helpful though...things seem to be moving more slowly this year.

The list is comprehensive of all who post...so SDN user A copies the whole list, pastes it in their response, and adds their interview invite at Program X to the list (in bold). The next person who posts, SDN user B, copies that whole list that user A just posted, pastes it in their response, and adds their rejection to Program X (in bold) while unbolding user A's response, then re-posts it. Thus, it may appear that since it is all in user B's post, they have gotten an 'acceptance' and a 'rejection', when actually they have just posted their rejection (bolded) and the acceptance was from a previous user (in this case user A).

Hope that helps...I'm sure it was either too complicated an explanation to be of use, or too simple that it was patronizing. But hopefully it was like a nice chair, bed, and bowl of porridge...just right. I'm lame, refusing to press backspace.

Edit: I just noticed Skinky posted a more concise and probably more helpful response than I...again, my backspace is broken. 😛

Hi,

How many interviews did you go on last year? Did you take a year off to do research, etc? Any suggestions? This is a painful process. 🙁

i was told by multiple sources that teh majority of interview invites are sent out by thxgiving... 7 days remaining... 😱

I've actually heard that things start picking up after Thanksgiving...

YEP, have to disagree with chef on that one. Pretty certain that the majority of invites go out after thanksgiving. A lot of people don't get any until after turkey day! I'm glad I wasn't talking to your multiple sources or I would be freaking out even more! 🙂
