I'm working on a hypothesis here... A chunk of schools are no longer accepting AMCAS apps (as of the 15th) which means that the applicant pool for these schools is pretty set. Many people who submitted earlier in the season were not granted II's because the schools were waiting to see if there would be better applicants in the pool later on. Now, the pool is decided so they can revisit the people that they passed over in the beginning. This translates to an influx of II's from schools that viewed people's apps a few months ago.

Think this is valid?

So "Hold" would be better than nothing? Doesn't sound right.

Nothing might be a silent rejection.

At least with a hold you know you're still in the game.

No, that's not what I meant. Your reasoning above is probably more valid for applicants on hold than for the rest of the pool. The reason that schools put them on hold in the first place is to compare them to the rest of the pool. Before all of the applications are in the hold applicants' chances at an interview are ~0%. After the deadline for primaries has passed their chances at an interview are > 0%.

I choose to believe you. I choose hope.

Andy Dufresne: That's the beauty of the application process. They can't get that from you... Haven't you ever felt that way about applying to medical school?
Red: I put in a mean application this cycle. Lost interest when I got rejected from several schools though. Doesn't make much sense now.
Andy Dufresne: This is the time it makes the most sense. You need it so you don't forget.
Red: Forget?
Andy Dufresne: Forget that... there are places in this world that aren't made out of stone. That there's something inside... that they can't get to, that they can't touch. That's yours.
Red: What're you talking about?
Andy Dufresne: Hope.

Sounds good to me 🙂

Gotcha, I guess that makes sense. Though +1 for hoping that those of us that haven't heard back get some II's.

Good theory OP.. now that I think about it, when I applied a couple of years back I received two invites late November.

also secondary deadlines haven't passed yet for every school so there are still a few weeks left.

Wait, I can't think of any schools where the secondary deadline has already passed. The earliest I know of is Nov. 1st. Unless these are Cal schools?

I think that there is a misunderstanding here. Re-read the post you quoted. This does sound like a valid point...

Whoops. Sorry bout that. It's all good.

Have not received a II in a few weeks. Things are slowing down. August/September was peak season IMO for the early birds.

there may be second / third waves after the new year for early birds. it's rolling, after all, and re-review isn't uncommon.

Same, it's been a while since I've gotten a new II. Definitely feel like things have slowed down. Even though schools may not have new applicants to consider, as they pass the halfway point in terms of interview invitations they may become more deliberate in giving them out, weighing their decisions more carefully? 😕
