marq_bme, as far as I know, none of the Cali schools pay any interview expenses. This is why I didn't apply there.

Of course, you can listen to none and think you've been blessed to have gotten an interview to a UC and you should take out a loan. Personally, I think there's enough good schools on the east coast/midwest...

Yeah, he found out that some schools average scores instead of taking the highest, so he's shooting for a 44 to cancel out the 36. 🙂

hi mstp ppl. i ended up only applying to 3 skools as md/phd...i got 1 interview, 1 skool hasn't received my mstp application yet???, and i duno the status of the 3rd one. glad everyone's doing good tho.

thanks CaNEM... my faculty interview was so so but my student interviewer is an alum from my high school... quite a coincidence... we shall see....

for me, i would only do that long md/phd track if i could be close enuf to my parents. i'm not ready to spend 7 years away from my parents and only seeing them 2x a year. for cali skools, there were only 4 skools that had md/phd programs that interested me, but i didn't designate that i wanted to app ucla as mstp so they only sent me an md app. hence my choices were narrowed to 3. but i'm forever cursed w/ this app process. oh well. dr. cooch that's kinda funny u assumed i was going thru a drought.

I just meant a drought in posting, I haven't seen you around in awhile. You have nothing to worry about in the app process, your stats rock and I'm sure the rest of your app does too.......you will be totally fine. But yeah, I don't feel too comfortable with my own personal drought in interviews now. I'm waiting on too many schools, and I've been waiting for awhile. Oh well...

Oh yeah, I called Hopkins. They told me I'm "Hold for interview", which I bet means that I'll be getting a nice little rejection letter in a couple months. Oh well. I haven't spoken to anyone at WashU, but their silence is deafening as well.

Duke & Vanderbilt provide lodging and up to $300 for travel costs. One of the Chicago schools is supposed to put you up at a plush hotel. WashU is da' bomb--they buy your plane tickets, pay for everything and give you a suite at a nice hotel. Many programs don't give you S*** until they decide to admit you, then they wine and dine you like you are a NBA lottery pick. It's great that some programs take care of you when you interview, just like a company would do if they were interviewing you for a skilled job. PhD programs usually pay at least some of the costs for interviewing applicants; why can't MD/PhD programs do the same? One of the guys who went to Hopkins last year, I think his name was Baylor, said that his credit card balance went up something like $10,000 due to the cost of applying and interviewing. That is scary.

Thanks Shamus. Too bad I didn't apply to these programs so I'll just fork out the expenses. I am glad that I am working to pay for it otherwise it is not feasible for me to apply while I was in school. This part of application is a sign of inequality. How can a disadvantaged person pay for all this? It just troubles me....

Yeah. I'm glad I'm took the year off to work. there's no way I could've afforded this without a real salary.

I've always thought that's sad as well. But... at the same time, there's very few places that aren't a half a day's drive to at least one or two medical schools. And every medical school out there trains their share of good doctors.

I think that the people most affected by this are those interested in nationally recognized programs. That's especially common among M.D./Ph.D. applicants, because as we've all been told since we said we were interested in grad school, reputation is absurdly important.
