So let's say you have an interview scheduled 48 hours away in a city that is 400 miles away. You just realized that because of the couples match, there is no way you will be ranking programs in this city (because either a) spouse doesn't have any interviews in the city or b) spouse's programs in the city are not any good). Should you email now (sunday night) stating that you need to cancel your interview and follow up with a call monday morning. Or should you just go to the interview. I know it's getting close to the date, but I hate to waste mine and their time (along with expenses). How rude is the 24-48 hour notice?

Well, its pretty rude considering I suspect you knew that your SO wasn't getting any interviews in the same time long before today. Unless the program has a local candidate, they won't be able to fill you spot at this late date.

BTW, an email tonight is not "48 hrs" notice since it won't be retrieved until tomorrow morning.

But I'd rather have someone cancel than show up and waste my time if there is no way they'd be coming to the program. So call first thing tomorrow morning.

Way too late, but I just learned something about you that I'm glad I found out while you were still just an applicant and not a resident in my program.

Going when you're really not interested in pretty painful, and it does waste people's time. Canceling this late certainly doesn't give the program enough time to fill your slot with another person, but still, I think most interviewers would appreciate having a free hour over interviewing someone who is definitely not going to go there.

Now, confession time, I canceled an interview a week before not thinking about the fact that it was a holiday week, so I essentially gave one business day's notice. I felt like a complete jerk about it, but I did some soul searching and realized that the program was in a place where I didn't want to be. I guess I should have done my soul searching earlier, considering a holiday was coming up, but still I don't think canceling was the wrong move. But yeah, it sounds like in this case you did have some prior notice, so maybe the nice thing to do would have been to let them know earlier.
