I have been put on the waitlist for interviews on Hopkins and UCSF (in ob-gyn). Their emails made it sound like I was qualified for an interview spot, but there were just too many people. I can't seem to find any info on this...is this common? How many people are usually on this doo-hickey? I'm sure some spots open up, but how hopeful should I be right now for these two big guns? I guess it's softer on the ego than a straight-out rejection. 🙄

Sounds like of weird, like they are interested somewhat or they would have either ignored you or straight-up rejected you. You might find out more if you posted this under OB/gyn. Perhaps there's a resident on there who has been in the same position you are in now.

I got a very similar email for an ortho program. It said that if I'd like to stay on the waitlist, let them know, and they'll let me know of any openings. There could be very short notice. They also said their program specifically did not invite more applicants than interview slots available.

I'm staying on the list, but I'm not saving the dates specifically if I get other interviews. If I'm able to attend the one that would be possible, that's great.

Also, out of about 15 or so people from my school applying for ortho, I was the only one who admitted to being waitlisted. About half the people said they were rejected; no one claimed they got an interview.

huh...I just got an offer from UCSF. i guess this bodes well after all...😀

I've received several emails of this sort. A couple of the programs are ones that I would have otherwise ranked very highly. I'm just wondering if anyone has actually matched out of such a situation, or if by being waitlisted it's likely that you'll be ranked low enough by the program that it's unlikely.

I got one email like this. The program I got it from sent out an email very early after the application submission acknowledging receipt and stating that they don't look at the applications until all of the letters are in. One of my letter writers took until about the middle of October to get his letter in. When they emailed the heading said invitation, but they said although I was competitive for their program, all their slots were filled, but they wanted to interview me if a spot opened. They sent a long list of dates and said to tell them any that I had open so they could put me on if there were any openings.

I got 3 emails like this. I told them all I would like to be on the waitlist. One of them sent me an email about 2 days later telling me a spot oppend up (actually my first choice of date). The other 2 have yet to email me 🙁
