I think LORs are one of the most pointless pieces to the puzzle. Everyone has 2-3 people that like them.

this i agree with. also, letters are the most unobjective measures and could totally be full of cr@p. here in oregon, there was this horrible surgeon at kaiser who was placed on probation and basically fired. however, he received super glowing letters of recommendation from fellow surgeons at kaiser to help him get some job in australia. now, australia's trying to hunt him down to prosecute because something like 60 of his patients died likely due to his errors. you can't tell me that the doctors who wrote him glowing letters didn't know he was a poor surgeon -- they worked with the guy and had to know about the limitations placed by kaiser and the state board because of his prior mistakes. they basically lied either to help a buddy or to get rid of problem employee/coworker.

now, where the hell is my comp secondary! 🙂

Well then interviews are pointless too. You can't learn jack **** about someone in 30-45 minutes.

They should just take X applicants with the best numbers of all apps they receive and admit them.

It's amusing to see DO schools, who supposedly look at the "whole applicant", offering interviews and even admissions based solely on numbers.

True. I don't think any one subjective factor can fuel the "whole person" trend, but I think all of them taken together can. Looking at life experiences is a good one. It would take a crazy person to lie and say they owned two Italian restaurants (a fellow interviewee this weekend). You know he's interesting, even if his LORs are full of BS.

I think the point of LOR’s and interviews is to see how other professionals view you. People with crappy social skills get into med school, but they are the exception rather than the rule. Remember on interview day you are being evaluated by everyone you meet that day, not just the people interviewing you.
