INTERVIEWED AT UCLA? this is your thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
what about the benifit of having to work in a county hospital where the students are allowed to do more procedures? I hear that USC students do more and are more skilled in this area...

I didn't apply to USC, so I don't know much about it, but I still probably wouldn't attend-I love UCLA!

Put simply...Yes.

Pacwana, I emailed you about the joys of Honrubio.

for those of you who interviewed at UCLA, how does the whole "inviting" timeline work. I've gotten the letter inviting me to interview and I filled out the days I could/couldn't go and mailed it back. Now do i just sit back and wait for them to snail mail something back or will it show up on my status page? Also, do they wait to schedule it until after they've received my transcripts and how long did it take to hear back what day the interview was scheduled for? last one, how long after the request was the interview scheduled for, am I looking at possibly this month or an april interview? thanks for any help guys/gals.

Hey Moskeeto!

They will post the date on the status page and I believe mail you instructions (mine was screwed up so not sure), and no they don't wait for your transcripts to schedule an interview.

My interview was on a Thursday and they scheduled it really quickly, so my guess is that you will be there sometime in March. I scheduled mine 3 days from the day I called and they had a bunch of slots open even in the following week...so don't stress!!

Are you kidding? IF I had a UCLA acceptance, I would trade it anyday with full ride to USC.

Not having either one of them, I can only resort to dreaming about it for now.

by full scholarship i take it that that only covers tuition correct? in that case, ucla would only be about 10K a year more (not sure on this tho).

usc is a great school and has great name recognition in cali (in fact, i'll probably go there next year), but to me, ucla still wins cuz of its national profile, medical center, and west LA location.

Why would you go to USC over UCLA if tuition were not an issue?

ucla is still 10000 a year for in state residents but usc would be FREEEEEEEE with a scholarship. over 4 years, that's a nice bmw 3 series. in addition, usc graduates attain excellent residencies in los angeles and receive unparalleled clinical training. Resident dirctors often comment on how usc graduates are nearly as proficient as some interns. WOW! but yeah ucla is pretty cool too

I grew up with this saying
If it's free
it's for me.

Good Question...i'm glad someone asked.

1) As many people have stated, the experience that the students gain from county is far superior, in terms of hands on experience, that what you gain from UCLA.
--even some UCLA student alluded to this fact during my interview day, but indicated that they didn't really mind because they didn't want to "get their hands dirty" (seriously).
2) County's focus is directly in line with what I want to do with my medical degree...it serves the indigent populations of Los Angeles County. The service they provide is amazing.

Note that both of my statements are very specific and personal reason that I would pick USC (if given a free ride) and by no means am trying to say that EVERYONE should pick UCS over UCLA. It just happens to be a perfect match for me. Also an interesting note is that I interviewed at both schools in the same
week, and going down to LA, I completely believed that UCLA was going to be my favorite of the two. Leaving LA, I had a completly different opinion. But, seeing as I am still waiting to hear form the schools, and I sincerely doubt that USC is going to give me a free ride, I could see any of you at UCLA come fall. ANDI would be overjoyed to be there!!! Because as everyone knows, UCLA is the bomb...for me it just had a little less bang that USC.

thanks for the info trix, hopefully everything works out scheduling wise, i'm just kind of hoping they schedule it soon because they've had my paperwork for almost a week tho and I haven't heard back. I'm probably just being a typical nervous premed, any chance to stay in-state gets me excited, but i'll cam down a bit now. 🙂

Moskeeto,

Though they're not very helpful on the phone, don't be shy @ calling to confirm that they received your interview stuff. It took them a month to get back to me w/ a date, and if I hadn't called to check in, probably would have been longer! I finally got a call from Deanna Moon to schedule.

thanks Nefertari. I'll give them a call tomorrow and check in. I just hate calling admission offices, i always feel dirty afterwards for some reason.

on a completely unrelated topic: Am i the only one that didn't realize that David Geffen Med school was named for David Geffen. I know I sound really dumb and now nobody is worried about me having a shot at taking their spot at UCLA, but I always thought that there was somebody else with the same name, but it wasn't THE David Geffen. I think its a bit crazy that their school is named after him, how long has it been this way? I think its kind of cool in a way, I can't imagine a med school in the deep south, (no offense to southerners), being named after an openly gay person. thanks for listening to me to expose my ignorance on a couple topics.

the scoop is david geffen looooooves ucla. apparently, he even put down on one of his first resumes that he went there - although he never did. more recently. his mom also had some medical needs taken care of there too. 😎

The dude gave UCLA some mad cheese.

yeah no kidding, heres what imdb.com had to say about it.

...announced a $200 million donation to UCLA medical school in May 2002, the largest single donation to a U.S. medical school in history. The school will be named The David Geffen School of Medicine. The campus already includes The Geffen Playhouse which was also named when the billionaire mogul donated $5 million. Geffen has also given bestowed gifts of $2.5 million to LA's AIDS Project, as well as another $2.5 million to NY's Gay Men's Health Crisis, and $1.4 million to AIDS Action in Washington, DC

Any news as to when the next batch of acceptances go out?

The Feb. batch went out around 2/20, so I would expect that the next batch will be sent out around the same date this month.

I hate to sound trite but for all of those who have been accepted, what is your story??? Tell us about yourselves...

4.0, 40, found cure for cancer and vaccine for aids, donated my left nut to my uncle, volunteered in a hospital, did lab research, born with a fatty tumor, consultant to AMGEN, bred a kentucky derby winner, trained a belmont stakes winner, taught science to disadvanaged children in south central, watched food network for two days straight.... that's about it i guess

Watching food network was probably the one EC that capped it for yo. Am I right? 😉 BAM!

Dodger Dog, I just pm'd you.

About Geffen's $200 million donation, here's what I learned about it while I was there:

Apparently he'll be giving $10 million to the school each year for the next 10 years, and then the remaining $100 million will be given to the school when he dies. Also, none of the money can be used to build any sort of structures on campus. It can only be used for research and for the medical students. So it doesn't look like the class that enters this year will see much benefit from all the money, since the bulk of it will come later on.

Cool maybe they can use that money to buy/make for us a syllabus w/all pertinent information so we don?t have to buy text books, and maybe put all lectures on streaming video so I can sleep in and watch lectures later. Just wishful thinking I guess.

I just checked my status page...letter sent 3/7, so I am probably toast. :scared:

Why do you assume it's bad news, Trix? 😕

By the way, when did you interview? (I'm sure you wrote it somewhere in this thread buy I'm WAY too lazy to check for it right now).

I agree with cipher Trix, you interviewed on Feb 10th, 3 weeks later you get your final letter sent...now don't get mad at me if this doesn't happen , but I think you'll be getting some good news soon! On the other hand I've been waiting post interview since mid january and nothing....where is the love UCLA?

Does anyone know anything about the waitlist? I heard that UCLA takes about half of its class off of the waitlist.

Those of you who have had a response, how long post interview?

im so jealous of trix!😀 😛 hope its good news

good luck, trix! will be sending good acceptance vibes your way....

I'm back...after checking the status page, I left work early to come home and check the 'ole mailbox, but alas nothing.

Thank you to everyone for all your support, but I think the chance of the letter being an acceptance is very close to zero.

UCLA sends out their acceptances in batches, and I think there would be other posts if a batch was sent out. Last month rejects and waitlists were sent throughout the month, and then, in the third week came the acceptances.

Realistically, I hardly think they had a special emergency "lets talk about Trix" meeting. So, like I said I think I am toast. +pity+

But I will try and lasso all the good vibes from everyone, and I will definitely keep you an update after I leave work early tomorrow (again!) to check my mailbox.

Hmm, I was under the impression that one batch was sent out during the 3rd week of the month. Are they going to be sending out several batches per month from now on?

congrats TRIX!!! I'm sure they had a special meeting for you🙂 Anyone want to check with the adcom if they are sending multiple batches of acceptances this month? I guess i'll give it a shot tomorrow

dirtybob

I don't think they have sent any POST-interview rejections yet. I think that they're waiting until the end for that. So your case is good news. I thought someone here said that in March, the adcom meets more frequently.

Now, if only they would remember the people that intreviewed way back in december... 🙁

a lurker i know (come on out, man) called admissions office. about 1/3 of acceptances are already sent out. aamc says must have 1/2 out by march 15(i believe. i know it's really soon) so they'll send out another batch by this friday. there's still many a chance to get in.

hmm.. i'm not sure how reliable your source is, but i'm hoping that he isn't! I asked my boss to write me a letter of recommendation (my last attempt at boosting my application) but it's not sent out yet. i think maybe by the end of this week. then 3 days to travel to CA (hmm.. should i fax it over?)

I remember speaking to the lady there and she told me that an acceptance batch will go out on or after the 15th. i'm hoping they send it out after the 15th.. so my letter could get there and they could look at it.. not that the letter would get me accepted, but at least.. if they were going to reject me, maybe they'll consider putting me in the waitlist.. haha..

oh well, can i do? i think i've done the best i could.. if i don't get in, i'll just be stuck in the east coast again for another 4 yrs. no big deal.. i'll make my way out to the west coast someday.. haha

three things:
1) i hate how i am obsessing over UCLA.. is it really all that?? haha

2) i just talked to the lady and she said that the March acceptance batch was JUST sent out yesterday! So I still didn't get in.. but i am hoping I haven't been rejected yet. She said that no post-interview rejections/waitlists have been sent out. they will be sent out by the end of March? (so Trix! probably good news!) So I asked her what my status was. She looked it up and she said my file is still being reviewed. I wonder if it says on my file that I am to be rejected or waitlisted.. but she's just not telling me and is going to send me a letter in 3 wks. haha.
oh well..whatever..

3)my status check is not working! ah! i am hoping it's just the server being down or something or maybe they are updating it right now.

so for those of us STILL waiting (me.. since Nov 4th.. zeez!), i guess we'll have to sit tight for another few weeks! arg!

Eunice

Ohhhhhh eunice! Thanks for calling-I feel so much better  I am doing a dance in my office right now  It may or may not be good news, but there is definitely hope now!

I don't know about anyone else, but I am dying to give Trix and big Congrats...anyone heard anything from her?

So, I finally found out what day my interview is on, almost 3 weeks after the initial invitation. 🙂 As excited as I am about interviewing at UCLA, I bummed because i may have to miss seeing something I've been looking forward to for a long time. I have tickets to see Steven Hawking on the same day, but its not until 8pm and I could catch a 540 flight home to make it in time. I was wondering if, from your experiences, it would be possible to leave UCLA and get to the airport in time to catch this flight? How late did the interview day last? from what I've read it seems the day is pretty random, but any info would be great so I know what plane tickets i can purchase.

It depends on when your interview is. Mine was in the morning, so I was done after lunch, but some in my group didn't interview until 2:00 or so - so then they would be done at 3:00. The lunch and tour occur midday - the tour is really short - only 20 min. if that so everything depends on who is interviewing you and when your scheduled to meet with them. Hope it works out for you!

moskeeto--

yeah, it all depends on what time your interview is scheduled for. My entire day at UCLA lasted 2 hours. I arrived at noon, spent 1 hour having lunch with a few med students and getting the "tour." I had my interview from 1-2pm and then I was done.

Still nothing in my mailbox. Argh!

Exactly how do y'all think UCLA sent this supposed letter? Strapped to a one-eyed pigeon? Tied to a hamster perhaps? If anyone sees a hamster running up Interstate 5 North please ask it if it has a delivery for Trix 😀 .

Moskeeto--I left about 3:00 the day of my interview, and there were two people in my group that day who had interviews that started at 3:00, but this was the latest. I myself am way to nervous to attempt such a thing, but I think you could make a 5:40 flight if you don't check any luggage.

Hey Trix, I live in the Bay Area too and I've noticed mail from UCLA takes particularly looooong to get up here! I get mail quicker from the east coast schools I've applied to. It takes at least 4 - 5 days for UCLA notifications to get to me... it even took 1 week for one! Still sending the "accpetance" vibes your way though! I have a feeling it's going to be great news....😉

on the status page, it says, give it 5 days. and i think they sent the batch out like 2 days ago? whenever it was that i posted about this.. so you still have at least 2-3 days Trix. Hang tight.. =)
At least you know you'll hear in a few days...
the rest of us.. we have to wait a few more weeks! sigh...
stupid UCLA. =P
But GOOD LUCK! I'm pretty sure it's an acceptance. The women DID tell me that they did not send any rejections/waitlists yet. so it can only mean 1 thing! =)

as far as the interview day, moskeeto, i believe the students give the tour and and they really don't have a say in your acceptance (i believe..) so you can just ditch the tour and fly back earlier if you really have to.
i forget when my interview ended b/c it was so LONG ago! haha. i think i've grown gray hairs just waiting for ucla.

good luck to you moskeeto!

i would suggest emailing/calling the admissions office (isn't it deanna moon that schedules the interviews) and ask if she can possibly accommodate an earlier interview to fit into your travel schedule. can't hurt. and don't forget about LA traffic for the ride back down to the airport. give yourself at least an hour. good luck!

Hey thanks for the advice and info everyone, I appreciate it. I still haven't gotten my letter so I don't know what time I'm supposed to show up to UCLA, hopefully its early, if not I'll call back. I just really want to see Hawking, seems like a once in a life time chance.

Trix, when I talked to them on the phone today, I was told that some of the stuff didn't get mailed when it says it did on your status page. My status page had my interview scheduled on 3/7 but I was told that the snail mail probably didn't get mailed out until the 10th. so maybe the same happened with you almost certain to be acceptence letter 😀. Good luck, I'm not one to count chickens, but sounds like you're in. You must be like a totally great person because you've gotten into some great schools, I'm very jealous 🙂.
