Still nothing in my mailbox. Argh!

Exactly how do y'all think UCLA sent this supposed letter? Strapped to a one-eyed pigeon? Tied to a hamster perhaps? If anyone sees a hamster running up Interstate 5 North please ask it if it has a delivery for Trix 😀 .

Trix,

When UCLA sent out my final decision letter, it only had to go 60 miles from their office to my house. Normally first class mail takes a day (one...day) to go from LA to Tustin, but this letter took nine! (Thank goodness I hadn't checked the status page until a week after they'd sent it otherwise I would have gone crazy!) So I think you right about the hamster post.

Good luck Trix!

-Brett

i agree with chacha47. i checked my online status in early february and nearly had a heart attack when it said my letter had been mailed out a week earlier. i assumed i would be getting the letter the next day (didn't arrive), the day after that, and the day after that... etc. it didn't arrive until 5 days later and almost 2 weeks after the "mail out" date. plus, i live 30 miles from ucla so it shouldn't have taken so long. ironically, it arrived with a postcard from drew saying i had an interview there (i think they communicate as to who gets in where, etc.)

incidentally, i got in so it was well worth the wait. 😉

Well, another day gone by with an empty mailbox...it's going to be a long weekend.🙄

Hey Moskeeto-Did you get your interview letter?

geez trix.. i get nervous every time i see that you've posted! don't post until you know 😀 you're giving us all heart palpitations... bet the good news will be there by wed.

WEDNESDAY???? I can't wait until WEDNESDAY!!!

Just kidding, but I really have to stop leaving work early (3X this week), and reading SDN every 5 seconds otherwise you won't hear from me at all because I will be looking for another job...back to work.

oh no\...oh no... my blood pressure is rising.. I just checked my status page and i have a date next to my "final decision letter sent" - the date is for today.. is that good or bad?

Oh, crap! After a grueling 4 months post-interview, that damned final decision box was checked off for me today. I'm thinking rejection. But at leased it'll bring some closure...Unless its an alternate list notification😡 AAAAAhhh. Trix, now I know how you feel.

ain't that better than a REJECT though? don't knock waitlists yo', it IS possible to bump off em'.

geromine, i interviewed in mid-jan and have a letter sent date filled in.... so on the good side, it would be really quick for ucla to be working on rejections already for someone who interviewed fairly recently and seeing as how they're usually slow. on the bad side though, i dont' feel my interview went as well as it could have, so i've been thinking this whole time waitlist or rejection, but i remember someone from the current class telling me at lunch waitlists usually don't hear until may because they're still interviewing people thru april. anyway, this is the hopeful side of me talking and to give you some solace! i'm as nervous as you and trix are now!

u know...when i cntacted the office, i was told that 24th would be the time when waitlists and rejections would be sent soley. its march 15th, deadline for AMCAS traficking half fill-class rule so im guessing u all got acceptances. anyways good luck. my box is as empty as the sahara desert.

unless they're adhering to that "once a month" for acceptance batches as some others mentioned..ok.. i'm driving myself batty. i'm going to stop stressing and hope you get good news, xenon. thx for the encouraging words!

Yeah, I'm personally not going to speculate anymore. This thing is stressful enough as it is. Just gonna sit by the mailbox until it gets here(in a month or so...😛) Good luck guys, I'll see you on the other side(...or not🙁 )

Wow, you know what this means don't you??

UCLA must have an entire heard of hamsters because mine is still on its way up I-5 😀

 maybe this is why the 5 is backed up all the way in Sac. (i'm learning to call I-5 "the 5" in case I get into a SoCal school.) I FINALLY got my interview letter today. It says I don't have to be there until 11:45, so now i'm double thinking if I can make it to the airport on time. that seems a bit late. O well, I'm gonna risk it. good luck everyone on getting those acceptences, I'd have pulled my hair out by now if I was anyone of you.

Thanks, Moskeeto. Maybe my letter will come tomorow since yours came today??

Good luck on your interview, and make sure to check out the new hospital-it's awesome!!

My status box finally says letter sent and I interviewed on November 6, 2002. So, I don't know what to think about this recent development. I live up in the Antelope Valley and I hope those hamsters climb the mountains and get to the valley fast. I think that the months of waiting has been torture enough ... Good Luck to everyone!

my final decision letter sent is filled too 🙁 I'm really nervous people...my interviewer said expet a wait of 6-8 weeks, and yesterday was 8 weeks....alright people good luck to everyone!

XENON-RAMZ, so for sure they're not sending out rejections til the 24th (you mean this month, right?)?? Thanks for calling. I got the letter sent update today too! Gosh, so nervous, so nervous--hope i can sleep this week! 😕

Hope all of you guys hear good news! I interviewed in early December and my final decision box is still blank. I suppose I should be expecting the waitlist/rejection letter now.

Hey, this is from AAMC's admissions recommendations:

"By March 15 of the year of matriculation, each school of medicine should have issued a number of acceptances at least equal to the size of its first-year entering class."

Maybe there's hope! So this means they would have accepted 120 as of today? Anyone w/ more info?

hey Nefertari, I also had Dr. Del Portillo as an interviewer...I don't know man, she didn't really show any emotion while interviewing me...what do you think? could she have given us positive feedback to the committee? I heard she's a tough interviewer and if she didn't like you, you would know, I didn't feel like she didn't like me after the interview, but I also didn't feel like she was totally impressed with me. I noticed that you also have that final decision letter sent checked, good luck to you bro!

Don,

Thanks so much for sharing that. I had EXACTLY the same impressions as you did @ her--tough cookie. In the beginning, she wasn't very friendly at all. She started off w/ "So tell me @ yourself . . .", then would constantly interrupt me in the middle of a sentence. Did she do that w/ you too? She had a really abrupt interviewing style and I think she enjoys stress interviews. It was my first, so I didn't have an idea, but after having gone to other interviews, I realize that she was the toughest. One good thing was that she didn't ask any ethics or healthcare questions. She didn't warm up til I started talking @ cultural issues and some of my volunteer experiences.

Yeah, I felt a bit discouraged post-interview, esp. since other students w/ me that day had really nice, friendly interviewers. I tried to not place too much weight on it since so many people have noted that there's not a good correlation between how you felt @ the interview and whether you get in. Well, I guess we'll know in several days! Fingers/toes crossed! (btw, I'm a gal, though I do love being treated like one of the guys) 😉

Hi UCLA students,

If any of you are checking up on us, please let us know if you've heard any word from the admissions office recently (i.e. are the status page notices this week acceptances? When post-interview rejections are sent?). Thanks!

Nefertari

This is a popular question. The most consistent response I get from the admissions staff is that student files are evaluated as fast as possible. If the committe likes your application and wants to offer you admission, you will find out in about a month from your interview date. If you are deemed for the waitlist or the other list, its not a priority task for them to notify you so they wait until the next mailing date for those tasks. Waitlist is not a bad thing at UCLA; many students get off the waitlist and into the class ... unfortunately you may have to wait until June or July for the good news. One last thing, the one thing that usually delays a decision on news of your application is not the wonderful staff in the admissions office (they are so efficient and they always provide me with lunch to talk to you guys when you interview) but the person(s) who interviewed you. If your interviewer is not prepared to talk about your application at the admissions meeting (or doesn't show up), then the committee can't make a decision on your application no matter how good you look on paper. I'll check back on you guys and let you know if I get any more information from the admissions staff.

Re: LOI
I suggest sending a LOI only if something regarding your academic or extracurricular achievement has changed -- i.e. you just completed another course in advanced biology and you did really well which reflects your excitement of having intervied at UCLA (don't use this idea, its just an example to make my point). A letter that only states your continued interest is a waste of time.

hey sorry girl 😀 I also felt the exact same thing. She didn't interrrupt me in the middle of sentences, but she only warmed up towards the end when we started talking about books. Anyways, if anyone who has their final decision letter sent date checked gets their notice, please let us know what it is, peace.

i so need to correct something i read from one of the posters. one month after the interview orelse??? not true. its random who gets looked at, and a big limiting factor is interviewer availability. mine was so busy, he/she arrived late to the interview!

Xenon, can you clarify what you mentioned earlier @ rejections/waitlists not being sent out til later this month? Thanks.

I agree--was checking out threads @ UCLA from last year and many folks who interviewed in Dec/Jan waited til March/April for acceptance news. Another clue is that for the past two years, the pattern has been that the letters going out @ mid-March have been acceptances to meet AAMC's 3/15 rule, and then pre-interview rejections sent out the following week. Post-interview rejections went out even later. Well, it's all conjecture @ this point. I'm doing everything I possibly can to pass the time waiting, even resorting to cleaning my place today.

Jedi, good to hear from you--please do update us since at UCLA's pace, who knows when we'll actually receive the final decisions that were sent 3/14 or earlier.

Hi everyone! I thought I read something somewhere on SDN about a recruitment weekend at UCLA, but I didn't have any information about it in my acceptance letter. Do any of you know if UCLA does any sort of second look/visit or recruitment weekend? Good luck to everyone who is waiting!!!

recruitment weekend is saturday, april 12. hope to see y'all there!

btw, admissions office says they will mail out more info about recruitment day before hten

alright, so I just talked to a good friend of mine who interviewed in the middle of feb. Excellent student, extracurriculars, clinical, etc, 34 MCAT (11,11,12) and I think something like 3.3 or 3.4 science GPA, URM, and he also has his final letter say sent checked with 3/14. Now if he gets waitlisted or rejected I'll be the first one to say WTF?! alright, stay strong people, we'll find out soon what our faith is

I know I said I wasn't gonna speculate, but I can't resist.
Last years, it seems their schedule ran a little later than this year. However, a huge batch of letters was sent out in april that included mostly waitlists. About 3/4 of all the SDNers, esp the ones on 2-3 month waits, were waitlisted. Looking at the number of people that seem to have letters on the way, I'd say most of us too will be waitlisted. And then its more waiting until end of May or so. 😡

Listen up.....first of all I want to congratulate you guys for reaching this far in the application process. Now for the important news. As my username "waitlistee", I was waitlisted last year at UCLA. It trully sucks because you start to terrorize the people in the admissions office(they are truly nice people). Also, sometimes you are forced to wait til the day before class begins in August. Now, if I remember correctly, when I received my letter stating that I was waitlisted, my "final letter box" on the status page was still emptied. This was similar for the other students who were waitlisted last year also.
If this pattern is still the same this year and if they don't send out any rejection letters until the end of this month, then the people who got letters sent 3/14 or 3/15 got accepted.

Although i was told march 24th specifically, i would take it as an indication of the timeframe of when rejections/waitlists will be sent out. I am 90% sure the posts earlier of ppl getting final letters are acceptances. Always beginning of month = +; end of month = -

maybe it's like that because a waitlist decision isn't a "final letter" and therefore it won't be checked until a final decision (accept or reject) is given. so like everyone else is saying...probably a good chance they're acceptances

geromine, based on what Waitlistee mentioned (thank you! btw), and why they would rush to send out waitlist notices prior to 3/15 (AAMC's recommended date to send out 1/2 of acceptances), maybe it's not so glum. I'm feeling like you somewhat--better to be guarded than have false hopes. You couldn't resist our little game though, eh? I love guessing games, so just having fun shooting in the dark while waiting for that letter. 🙂

ahhh! after totally giving up on UCLA, it looks like i might have hope, my final decision letter was sent on 3/14 too and with all the speculation going on in this thread, i'm getting excited. i seriously think i will die before it comes. i interviewed in mid-december and was sure i was rejected after not hearing for so long. even if the news isn't good (and i'm going to try and not think about that) at least i'll have some sort of news. good luck everyone!

My box was also filled on 3/14...when do you guys think we will actually recieve our letters? April?😀

The waiting is going to be unbearable!!!

Okay, this is probably going to scare a lot of people (including me) but i just called and asked if they had sent out any waitlist or rejection letters and they said they just sent them out this morning! ahhhhh! what if the letters that were supposed to be sent on friday didn't make it out til this morning and are actually waitlists and rejections?!! kill me now, please.

Same story here. My box was filled too on 3/14. I have to resist the urge to camp out next to my mailbox...since I probably won't get it till Wednesday anyway since they are notoriously slow. Just hope I'm not waitlisted or rejected. 🙁

okay, so after 10 minutes of deliberating, i called back and my letter was sent this morning, NOT friday, 3/14, so that probably means a waitlist or rejection. dammit! here i had my hopes up, but i guess i'll just have to wait out the longest week in my life.

God save my empty decision box and keep it safe from harm

good luck ppl

My hamster arrived !! My hamster arrived!!

and.................THEY LET ME IN

YEAH TRIX!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha, told you so. 😛

oh my gosh! Congratulations, Trix!!!! Yay!

btw, ppl, i called this morning too... but they must be telling everyone different things, because i did not get an answer besides, "a bunch of letters were sent out friday and i can't tell you what kind the were." NO mention of letters being sent today, so keep your hopes up! good luck!

woohooooo!! congrats, trix!!

TRIX!! yay!!
told you it would be good news! =)

congrats!!!! i hope i get to see you in August 03!!!

Thanks everyone!!

It really was worth the wait...I can hardly believe that I am actually in at UCLA. I didn't get a secondary until the week after x-mas, which was pretty depressing. I had given up by Thanksgiving...and the hamster mail is a real killer.

My thoughts are with all of those waiting for good news. It sounds like there will be lots arriving by the end of the week.
