hey guys, i know it's super nerve-racking waiting for the waitlist movement...so hold tight! and best of luck to those of you still crossing your fingers to be pulled off....a few comments based on my experience:
1) from talking to the admissions office, i've heard that anywhere from 25-40% of people can be taken off the waitlist in a given year at UCLA. i believe the "first priority" (unranked) waitlist is 100-200 people strong (i know that's a big variance, but i've heard both of those numbers at diff. times). if you're on the "hold" list you most likely will not get in this year.
2) my online status says my "final decision letter" was sent on may 20th, but that wasn't posted until may 23rd, and the actual written letter was sent by saturday delivery on the 24th.
3) i don't know about the other waitlistees who were pulled off the list recently---but i AM in school, so i have had updates to provide...my previous semester's grades, my current semester's coursework, my research (and yeah, i'm in graduate school, not undergrad)
4) being an out-of-state applicant, i made sure to emphasize in my letter of intent why california, esp. SoCal was my # 1 choice. i mean isn't 80% of the incoming class at UCLA in-state? that of course happens for a variety of reasons--but if you're an out-of-stater be sure to mention why you want UCLA specifically, or what draws you to the LA area
5) for those of you asking about whether you should mention what other acceptances or waitlists you're holding----i wouldn't. well, at least, i didn't, and would advise you to make your letter simple and to the point. focus on YOU and UCLA...the rest doesn't matter!
6) since the recent handful of us taken off the list were the first ones picked off post-may 15th---it's a real positive sign of good waitlist movement---but remember that based on posts from other years, they do pick people in june, july, etc as well. although it becomes less and less as the summer goes on, so best of luck in the weeks to come! if you're planning on pushing this issue, i would say do it NOW rather than later!
GOOD LUCK 🙂
