interviews 2003/2004

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am at MGH some time around the second week of december. Can't remember exactly right now. My invite came in early-mid october. They only interview on tuesdays and thursdays. AP-only have to be tuesday.

Michigan I think interviews into February. I'm going next week. Hopkins I know stops interviewing in early january. Others are somewhere in between.

I agree though, not sure what the exact qualifications are for interviews (or for rejections). I also don't know when they stop sending out interviews - maybe if people decline they invite someone else?

I think path tends to interview fewer people per day than other fields - the UMass OB program today had almost 20 people interviewing today. I know at a lot of my path interviews I am the only one for the day. So perhaps tougher to get the date you want. Guess I have been lucky so far with that.

I was told the Univ of Chi program only interviews about 20-30 people for its 5-6 spots while for they might interview 100-150 for a competitive field like ortho, surgery, neuro etc..

BU interviews in December and January on Wednesdays and Fridays. Not really that many days considering that 2 weeks are filled with xmas and new years!

Geoleox, yaah, governaitor and jasminscent, thanks a lot for your posts. Yaah, I remember one of your posts mentioned that BID had invited 100 people this year, really? How much chance can we match there from this group? Also, I have not heard from MGH yet. Do you guys think it's over now? Thanks again.

It might be over, but until they have sent a "TY for applying" letter it ain't over.

Give them a call. Express interest.

2 rejections yesterday.

Johns Hopkins & U. Wash.

do me a favour and spill coffee on their carpet when you guys go there to interview!!

CHEERS and i hope all is going well!

You Man, Rir  I wish I could go there and spill coffee. Unfortunately, I have not applied there yet

no no! i got *rejections* from there, not interviews!

yeah, well hurry up and apply so you can mess up their office for me when you interview there!!

cheers!

I am not sure about chances of matching with 100+ interviewees. BIDMC has a fairly big program though. Other specialties routinely invite over 100 folks for ten or so spots, so I don't think this is that unusual. I also don't think it means that an interview there means less, they just get lots of applicants.

I am kind of wondering how this all happened before email. Some of my confirmation letters seem to be cutting it kind of close before the interview, especially since some of them require traveling.

About johns hopkins - do they send out confirmation letters/emails well in advance of interview? I scheduled my interview (for december) in early october and have not heard a peep from them since then. Anybody else?

I can't promise to spill any coffee since I don't drink coffee, but perhaps I can track some mud in? Gotta be some mud in Baltimore in december.

I got rejected from Hopkins today which I thought was kind of odd. I didn't want to go there anyway, but it still is a little disappointment. It's just weird cause I got interviews everywhere else I applied a long time back including the big guns (MGH, BW, columbia, etc.) I wonder what they base giving an interview on cause I thought I had a decent step 1 score in the 240s and i have a publication and am in AOA. I guess they have a really high step 1 cutoff. Oh well 🙄

globulin-
i highly doubt hopkins has a cut-off that high. i would call them and find out. i have done this and it turned out- there was something in a LOR that the program did not understand (long story). i explained the situation and they gave in an interview. it happens- sometimes the person giving out the interview is out there- make them tell you why, afterall, you paid to apply there.
just my experience-

ok, so here's the skinny on hopkins.

i was rejected there and called them a while back. they told me that the step 1 cut off this year was about 225, so that may explain why you got rejected. (it did for me) maybe they just care more about the objective things than the other top places you've received interview invitations.

hope that helps some of the confusion.

also, i got the big NO from vanderbilt. they also told me it was because of usmle 1 although i'm not sure what number they were looking for. anyone know anything about vandy?

wow globulin,

that is suprising that you didn't at least get an interview. However, Hopkins, from what I understand, is hands down the top program in the country in terms of faculty, research $$$, and tools. Perhaps they can be very particular in who they try to bring in. I didn't apply there as I have no interest in Baltimore/Wash DC area.

Still you should give them a ring and ask them "WTF?" but only if you really care.

By the way, Rush in Chicago sent an interview invite via good old fashioned us mail today. Had anyone heard from them earlier?

Anyone heard from Wake Forest yet?

i haven't heard from wake, unc, or duke. i was especially wondering about wake also. anyone heard anything from them?

Hey Path19,

I haven't heard anything from UNC either. I got rejected by Duke in October. I don't really mind about UNC as all my interviews are set and the 2 'left overs' were never big on my list, so even if I got an offer at this point I wouldn't be able to go.
A week or so ago I wrote 2 PD's of programs I haven't heard from yet stating that I was going to be in the area and really wanted to look at their programs, I had interviews within 12 hours and I got my first choice of dates. If you are interested in UNC, Duke, or Wake, it might not hurt to phone/write at this point.
next year I would really like to be involved in the selection process so I can see how this 'voo doo magic' works. It is funny to see which programs have rejected people vs. who offered interviews.
Anyway, I think it's time to write/call some programs, it's worked for me.
Ri- I think you mentioned a while ago that you had contacted some programs, what became of it!?

Thanks for your responses. Hey Path19, who did you call to ask about why you didn't get an interview? I guess I should call the program coordinator, or di dyou call the program director? I really don't want to live in baltimore area either so I wouldn't have gone there even if I had the interview, but I am curious to here their story about why they rejected me. Now I'm worried maybe one of my letters of recommendations screwed me over, but I doubt it, but now the thought is in the back of my head. Man, that would totally suck. 🙄

well it hasn't worked for me so far. i haven't heard anything from the few that i e-mailed and i'm not convinced that it's gonna do much for me....but i'll give it some more time.

CHEERS!

Just to add my $0.02. I got an interview at JHU, but I am below (though not by much) of the Step 1 "cutoff" of 225. I think that they look at more than your grades, scores, etc. I have a background in basic science research and played that up in my personal statement.

Hi everyone!

I was just looking through all the old posts looking for the link to the list of questions to ask programs. I can't find it. I even tried the 'search forum' option. Could one of you be kind enough to send me the link?? Please????? I thought I book marked it, but I am not sure what happened to it!

Yaah-- I liked the the www.findyourspot.com link! It told me that I should live in Honolulu, Hawaii!! I think I've been in Ireland too long! I need some sun! But Hawaii doesn't interest me, I have had too much of 'island life' here in the 'isle'!

I can corroborate the fact that the "225" cutoff at Hopkins is not absolute. My score was below 225, but I got an interview. On balance, though, I have a research interest with publications - and good recommendation letters from what the interviewers are telling me. I really think that it probably boils down to the quality of your personal statment (if you can't tell, I'm joking about the personal statement - I'm thinking about quizzing the interviewers as to whether they actually read the thing).
