Suppose a candidate were interviewing at a school that traditionally does not attract the very top applicants. If the institution extended an interview and the applicant performed well, would the institution admit hoping that some top applicants will come even if they know that most will likely have other choices? Or, would they be concerned about yield and likely not offer the spot if they thought it were unlikely that the applicant were to matriculate? Is "yield protection" as important in med school admissions as it is undergrad admissions or less so?

I ask because I was told directly during a recent interview that a was a very good candidate, but that it was very unlikely that I would attend. Does that mean rejection or might the school be willing to take a chance and offer a spot?

Thank you for any insights!

Bad day or are you always so bitter?

The OP's question is a legitimate question for the forum; I was wondering the same thing about a few schools.

I am always this bitter where meltcher is concerned.

Check out his posts. All his "questions" are designed to have people stroke his fragile ego by saying: "with your stats, blah, blah, blah" or "with 16 interviews, blah, blah, blah . . ."

But mostly I am an overworked med student who has a laptop in my lap while I eat and watch DVRed "Dancing with the Stars" during a much earned study break. And I find this cycle's SDN to be very bland. Trying to shake things up a bit.

The 2007-08 cycle was hilarious and nasty and fantastic!!!!

Mix it up 2009-10 cycle dudes!!!!!!!!!

I don't think I would read too much into a comment. Take it at face value and assume you're going to get rejected. I'd assume you didn't perform quite as well as you thought you did if they told you it was unlikely you'd attend.

Good points. I agree. 🙂

I think that's what waitlists are for. They can always offer your spot to somebody else if you turn them down. It's not like your spot will be empty if you don't attend.
