Had my first interview today at UF. Nice experience.

Anyone heard from Penn or Cornell?

The class last year did a great job of posting extensive interview and program reviews. I hope you all do the same! It is an invaluable resource to get others perspecitves.

Another lurker here. Will definitely post interview experiences (when I have them!)

Thus far:

Columbia
GWU
Baystate
Penn
Yale
University of Chicago
Northwestern
UIC
Cleveland Clinic
Case Western

For the correlation-types and those worried about cutoffs:

USnews top 50 school
Almost all HP in third and fourth year
Step I/II: 215/237

Got my first FU from Advocate IMMC in Chicago. At least they added this line : "Due to the tremendous number of applications received for only 2
spots, some very difficult decisions had to be made"

Still I find myself thinking something like : OH CRAP I'm totally screwed I'm gonna wind up in some crappy primary care IM job...

I did get invites from:

U of Michigan (9/30)
U of Pittsburg (10/3)
U of Maryland (10/3)
CCF (10/3)
Case Western/Metrohealth (10/6)
Penn State (10/6)
UIC (10/6)
Wayne St (10/7)
GW (10/7)
Med College of Wisc (10/7)
Mercy - Pittsburg (10/10)
U of Chicago (10/11)
Med. College of Ohio (10/12)
Gtown (10/12)
Case Western (the other one?) (10/14) <- had to look up the area code to find out who they are!

Med College of Wisconsin Prelim year : sent me an invite literally an hour after I submitted the ap

No word from:

Northwestern
Rush
MGH
Anybody in Phili

Step I: 236 Step II: wait! there's a step II ?!?!

I haven't done a search of the interview at Vanderbilt - but the letter says they use the behavioral method of interviewing. I have this image of standing on an electrified floor with a simulated rank order list - everytime you don't put vanderbilt first - they shock you. As long as I don't have to take that annoying skills inventory test!

I am getting the feeling that alot of schools are waiting for a step 2 results before an interview if your step 1 scores was not SUPER SUPER stellar. I hope a score posting of late december wont be too late, I think it might be.

Either way I f*cked myself OZ style.

I have my interview at University of Maryland on Tuesday 10/18. I'll be sure to post my thoughts post-interview in the interview review thread.

Got Wake Forest by snail mail today.

Hi,
I got an invite from a program today, but they didn't say who they were. The email ended in @uhhs. Does anyone know what that is??? I don't want to call without knowing.

I also got the "Hi, we're inviting you for an interview, now try to figure out who we are!" e-mail from CWRU on Friday.

You have to admit, it made for a few minutes of excitement and mystery.

Me: UHHS?? wtf is that? it looks vaguely like a military acronym? is that the military? oh **** did i black out and join the Army again???

decline Pitt so this slacker can stay near his family!

NYU 10/17 email. Canceled SUNY downstate today.

Completely, off-topic: anyone see Queen in concert lately. Saw them in NJ last night- they were great!

UT Houston today (10/17) email - will decline - I recall some bad press on this forum a month or two ago - - a couple months ago I'd never think I'd be cancelling interviews based on SDN posts which I can't remember the specifics of.

Come to think of it, I can't believe that I'm in a position to cancell interviews at all!

Well, Im officially bummed.

Nothing heard (no rejection/acceptance) from BID, MGH, B&W, Penn, Yale, Dartmouth, RUSH, NW, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Mayo-Jax...is something amiss with me? No Step II score, only 2 LOR so far, is that hurting me? Im tired of asking this (and Im sure people are tired of hearing it)

yo Idio

I'm telling ya...I think it's the calm before the storm.......................aka first week of November (post MSPE upload)

I dunno, it looks like a buncha these places have given out like 50+ interviews already...not much left. Of course, that may just be my perspective (i.e. this board)

true...but places i've interviewd so far...ie SLU et al....they interview ATLEAST 100 per the PD. And i've heard anywhere b/w 100-150 at other institutions. so i'm also just crossing my fingers 😛

Truthfully, i think the programs you listed ARE waiting for step 2 scores if your step 1 wasnt 235 +. What I base this on? Lets say a little birdie told me, and also it is a correlation based on this board. I too have yet to HEAR anything from these programs and I have a good step one but no step 2 as of yet. This is dumb, had I know I would have taken it earlier, by the time my scores are in it will be jan. I am depressed.

Step I = 258, not that that should mean anything, just that I figured it would put me in the kind of group that might not need a Step II score just to get an interview. We will see, definitely learning something through this all this.

Hang in there I am with you brother.

Idio,
Most programs interview 7-10 x more apps than spots if you look at freida. Places like MGH likely interview 250+(too lazy to check). Just because it is MGH doesn't mean people want to live in Boston or work 10 more hours a week.

I have gotten 1 gas in like 2 weeks. In the next two weeks, the vast majority will come in.

Idio, I doubt it is waiting on your step 2. Why would anyone care? They know you are smart, diligent and/or a good test taker?

Good luck,dre'

Some perspective:
there are specialties that have given out NO interviews such as derm and IM (according to 1 friend who is very competitive!). Many people I know have gotten far fewer than those on this site in EM, OB, IM.

I hear you guys. I too am experiencing a calm, however, I think it's due to the fact that my anesthesia chair letter has not been done yet because one attending has not submitted an eval towards my anesthesia sub-i grade!!!!! 😡 😡 I think i'm getting an ulcer!

I dont think it's the step 2 score, for some of those at least, cause I dont have one, my step 1 is much lower than yours, and i did hear from Penn and Columbia. Still waiting on all the boston progs, Duke, and Cornell though (although i haven't seen anyone get an interview at the latter yet so far). Is your application complete, idio? I have a feeling some of these places may be waiting for anesthesia letters (at least in my case). Maybe step 2 as well. Who knows. . .

I'm right there with you guys... I have not heard anything in a couple of weeks, and I think a lot of people are experiencing this right now. I can tell you the lull is probably not due to incomplete ERAS or lack of Step 2 scores since my ERAS is complete and I have Step 2 scores in (as well as many other people I have spoken with). I also think things will pick up after MSPE.

Just hum that annoying Orphan Annie song... Screaming in your pilllow also helps...

i was going to post this later, but it seems everyone is getting stressed out, so i hope this helps. my step 1 was (drumroll please)....

195!

That's right, 195. And I've gotten 16 interviews, 4 of which were since my Step 2 was released (in the past week). I've noticed that some people have gotten interviews from places I applied to, and I didn't hear from those programs for a month after that. For instance, many people got an invite from Florida the week of Sept 1. I just heard from them a couple weeks ago. I think it's just the random order in which they review files. RELAX! You guys are so competetive, especially compared to me, that I am sure it's just a matter of time till you all acheive your propofol wishes and sevoflurane dreams (a la Robin Leach).

Also, you have to remeber that MSPE's are not in yet, and many programs are waiting for those before they even start reviewing files. So give it some time. When it comes right down to it, everyone's going to get a great program and be an Anesthesiolgist.

So you guys/gals with 258 Step 1's...don't second guess yourselves. It's only a matter of time.

yeah, but your step 2 score made up for your step 1 score, and the 4 interviews you got after your step 2 score was released are some of the ones we're waiting on. 🙁 You are actually a case that makes us wonder whether we need the step 2 score in. But i think you're right about the files being reviewed slowly. That could be part of it.

Duke via email today (10/18)! 🙂

(I guess singing Little Orphan Annie showtunes helps!)

EW,
You are an inspiration. What do you feel makes your app so stellar?

my neighbors are going to curse your name - I am now warming up my voice. Believe me, I know a little less than half of the words to every single song from the Little Orphan Annie soundtrack.

I think the showtunes may really help - I am going to keep singing!

SLU (9/7) - interviewed 9/29
UAB (9/6)
UIC (9/19)
MCG (10/3)
Vanderbilt (10/3)
UTMB (10/3)
VCU (10/3)
U.Chicago (10/11)
Ochsner (10/11)
U Michigan (9/7)
Loyola (10/18) - new today

I got the big ding from IL masonic TY

AND Happy birthday chicamedica - you should get extra interview offers today.

Looks like some of the programs in NYC are finally moving... NYU, SLR, and StV invited me recently. Could big bad Cornell be next to start sending out invites? Or are they gonna sit on their butts until after Nov 1 like Mt. Sinai? I dunno...

ok...so I am NOT an anesthesiology person (applying to IM and EM), but have a soft spot for anesthesiology since my fiance matched last year and is doing her internship this year....

BUT I have noticed 1 thing: in the "interviews" threads, you guys have 26 FREAKIN' PAGES!!!!! Comparison: EM--> 7 pages, IM--> 10 pages, Peds--> 5 pages.

R U GUYS ALWAYS ON SDN!?!?!?!?!?! 😍 😍 😀 🙄 😀 😉

I resent that remark. I spend equal amounts of time lurking on the ERAS, and ECFMG sites. 🙄

btw, what are you doing on the computer at all, shouldn't you be rounding or something. 🙄

Hell yeah! Everyone of us is a lazy bugger who are closet geniuses with 250 step 1's and junior AOA with nothin' better to do than to quit work early, go home, check email, and then brag about our interview offers on SDN to make other people look like fools for not choosing anesthesiology.

To be honest, I think anes is one of those fields that invite applicants early. Most of my surgeon-wannabe classmates only have a couple of invites while many students going into anes already have at least 10, if not over 20, invites.

We're also more trusting of each other and dont mind sharing what we've found out so far and where we're invited/rejected. I'm sure there are probably a lot of lurkers on the other forums that prefer to leave their colleagues in mystery.

Hahahah....FUNNY!!! REAL FUNNY!!!! 😀

[and the gloves have come off]

shouldn't you be sniffing gas b/w patients or something!!  😍 😍

BTW...I AM SOOOO kidding!!! I joke to my fiance about how she's gonna be a glorified drug dealer and I'm gonna be sitting there with my "team" pondering endlessly as to why the potassium level "jumped" from 3.0 to 3.1 while looking up journals after journals as to the "latest and greatest" studies to show evidence of this and that and then I'll accidentally stab myself with my gold plated...with initials...EKG caliper placed...of course...in my pocket protector!!

I saw this once on my surgery rotation. We had to perform an emergent geekectomy with an elective scrotoplasty to save that guy. It was quite the surgery to observe. 😀

In response to your original question though..."on sdn all day..." I've noticed that most anesthesiologists are tech-savvy people. Furthermore, they are typically pretty cool people that get along with just about everyone. I think the natural evolution of this is to find other cool cats... and kittens... in a technologically advanced sort of way, which is pretty much the definition of SDN. In fact, I have read a few posts on here about people using their cell phones to post on sdn, if that isn't being tech-savvy, I don't know what is.

On another note, I noticed the IM/EM interest. I liked both of those rotations, and am realizing that if I didn't choose anesthesia, EM, IM-subspec, and Trauma surg would be duking it out for a place in my heart. As you'll notice, I HATE CLINIC!!!
