uvahoo, i'm not sure what you SHOULD do, but here's what i would do... it depends on whether or not you would actually go to the interview on the 10th and do both. if not, then unfortunately it seems like you'd have to choose between the two. if you are willing to go to both, then i think you shouldn't ask the professor what she meant (like you asked about in your last post); instead, i would let her know that you're really excited about the interview and you look foward to meeting her (without asking her to clarify, because that might give her an easy out or instill even more doubt in her). if she actually did take back the interview, she'll let you know. if not, then hopefully she'll realize that you are dedicated to the school and interview you anyway! it just seems so outrageous that she would rescind the interview that to me, this seems like the best way to handle it.

i hope this makes sense... this is what i would do if that happened to me!

I am applying to arizona state too. I spoke to the secretary few days ago. She said they have 315 files and invitations will be sent out via email by feb 10. They were just starting to look over the applications.

I'm in total shock. I posted previously that I ran into an interview weekend conflict but that the lady at Vanderbilt was really nice about it and said they were looking into alternate times for interviews and that the day they picked must have been popular. She said she was going to get back to me yesterday. I didn't hear anything all day yesterday or today so I sent her a brief email checking in with her and saying again how I looked forward to meeting her and how I thought her work matched my interests well.
So her reply was unfortunately they won't be able to bring me in for an alternate date as they are forced to make these difficult decisions among several good candidates.
They took back their interview because I already committed to another one!
I just don't even know what to say, I don't understand why she told me they had even discussed an alternate date. I wonder if she invited whoever else she was going to and they wowed her on the phone (in hindsight I thought I could have been better on the phone). I'm not sure what to do... Their date is Feb 10th, my Penn State interview stuff starts the morning of the 11th- the 10th was a pizza party. For a second I debated trying to go to Nashville the 10th and leave that night for Penn State and miss the pizza party. I'm just not sure I want to do that though, it would be expensive, hard to pull off, and I feel like I would be begging her to give me another chance (I mean even if I offered that she might still say no, that's ok). I mean I was really excited about Vanderbilt, but I kind of have a bad taste in my mouth now. And I couldn't even put one program over the other without visiting, both professors of interest seemed like a really good fit (working with different populations but still both good). I'm sorry for the really long post, I just wanted to know if anyone had anything to say... My friend here just told me to not worry about it and say I'm sorry to hear that, please let me know if that does change- I'm still willing to come at an alternate time.

I agree. I wonder how happy you would be working for this person considering how it's starting out. If you really want to go to Vandy though, I'd say take caffeinebean's advice.

A pizza party at one school is not worth missing an interview for - if that is really the conflict, I would advise doing both interviews - can't you do the interview and travel that night or very early in the morning? The social stuff is really more for the candidates to feel comfortable and get to talk with students, I don't think it matters much whether you're there or not as long as you show genuine enthusiasm during the interview. Everyone knows that there are overlapping interview weekends, so it's not as big a deal as you probably think.

So, given that you're interested in Vanderbilt, I would ignore the yucky feeling in your stomach and any discomfort with bringing up the interview subject up again with the woman - I would advise contacting her and letting her know you can come on the 10th, since the alternate date she mentioned is not an option, and make sure they still have an interview slot for you. If not, at least you'll know for sure that they are not serious about you as a candidate, and if there is a slot, you'll give yourself another shot at a good program and possible fit.

That being said, Penn State is a great school, so congrats on the interview and good luck.

This probably depends by school, but I was under the impression that some of those social events were actually sneaky "interviews" by graduate students ... i.e. to report back to their advisor if a person was really aloof, drunk, providing totally conflicting information, asking inappropriate questions, etc. I'm sure that graduate students have some say in the process - after all, they have a stake in who their labmates are.

The students *definitely* have a say in the process. This is coming from a current clin psych PhD student. I got an offer from Penn State last year and was told that part of the reason I did was because everyone really liked me, both the students and faculty alike. You do go out to lunch with several students on the day of the interview at Penn State, so that may be another opportunity to interact with current students. I personally would not want to work with a faculty member who was so inflexible that he/she would rescind an interview invitation because an applicant already had a prior engagement. But that's just me. Good luck in whatever decision you decide to make.

To anyone who is uncertain, current grad students at these programs definitely have a say-so regarding their impressions of applicants. Some programs have students officially "interview" with students. They sometimes call it a questions and answer session or present it as your opportunity to ask questions to current students about housing, cost of living etc. In addition, any party, dinner, tour, whatever you have with current students might as well be considered part of the interview process. Current students often turn in rating forms about each applicant. At the least, they speak up about anyone who stands out as a bad fit, too unpredictable, too drunk, too annoying, too unstable, etc. etc. So be on your best behavior at all times 🙂

This is just my guess-- obviously I don't know anything you don't know-- but my opinion is, she's telling you she's not interested, end of story. Obviously, that sucks, but I don't think that offering to come on the originally proposed date would change things. In fact, she might have changed her mind due to something completely unrelated to the interview date-- for instance, perhaps her top-choice prospect has said that he/she is definitely planning on coming and she can only take one student this year. I don't know. I mean, you could email her and see if anything would change if you could come on the original date, but I think that's pretty unlikely to pan out. Unfortunately. Sorry.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone else received an e-mail from Suffolk (arrived today) about the OUTREACH Fellowship? It basically says that although no admision decisions have been made that if you want to get a Fellowship you should apply now.

Now, the deadline is 2/17, and the latest you should hear about interviews is 2/15. I know I shouldn't be looking too much into this, but does it make sense that they would tell people who they weren't accepting/interviewing to even bother applying for fellowships?

Well my first interview is over. I just got back from Virginia. Wow what an exhausting trip. This interview was at one of the few PsyD programs I applied to.
Well my first bit of advice is if you're traveling far make sure if at all possible you arrive the day before. I was exhausted when I arrived the night before my interview and was glad I had time to rest and prepare for the interview. There were 15 other students at the interview from all around the country and I was comfortable with the group. We had one on one faculty interviews almost immediately. My interview was with the clinical director of the program. Ifelt like we connected right away and I honestly enjoyed the hour long interview. She had a list of 15 questions she asked me such as: What are your strengths and weaknessess as related to psychology?, Is there anyhting you can anticipate that would keep you from finishing the program?, Why did you choose a PsyD. and not a PhD progran? (this one was hard as I mostly applied to PhD programs-I applied to the PsyD programs because they integrate theology with psychology not because I am clinically oriented). On a scale of 1 to 10 how much do you want to go to this program? I decided I would be totally honest and said "7." I know these answers may have ruined it for me but at least they truly represent who I am. I had about ten minutes to ask questions at the end of the interview. I asked about internship placement rates and found they were 100% (impressive). The clinical training appeared to be outstanding. There were also many opportunities to work on research starting the first year. Later in the day we met with the student panel and asked questions. This was informative. Next, we had lunch with the students and faculty and I found this to be easy, natural and comfortable. Finally, we had the group interview. We were split up into groups of 5 with one professor and were asked to read a clinical type problem and identify main problrms, characters and potentiual solutions. This was okay but it felt very artificial and everyone knew they had to speak up, etc... I think everyone did okay and have no idea how they decide on this. My group at least was very suppotive and non-competitive, so no one got slammed. I left for a flight immediately after this. I felt good overall about the program but am looking forward to my next interview (research oriented PhD program) on Feb 17-19th, so that I can have a comparison.

Hey forensic, Congrats on your interview! If I were you, I'd go- as long as it doesn't conflict with another interview date- it could be another great option! Good luck!

i am going to go mainly for the experience. personally i am concerened about the finances mostly but i'll save it for later when it actually matters (not accepted yet). i am still waiting for psy.d announcements as well.

Cajal, i was contacted by phone on saturday morning (completely unexpected, i usually switch from my i-hope-i-hear-about-an-interview mode to my relaxed mode on weekends, but now i know better!)

i also received an email from a prof u of washington (seattle - child clinical) today about a phone interview this week. anyone else hear from this program? if so, is everyone conducting phone interviews or are some people doing in-person interviews? does this depend on the prof or does this mean they may not be considering me as seriously as others? i hope it's the former!

Not sure how it works with Washington, but I've had two phone "interviews" which have been precursors to a real live interview invitation. One interview offer happened at the end of our conversation, one happened a couple of days later. They've been billed as a "brief conversation" and it's really been a chance for me to ask questions more than anything else. Some programs may only do a phone interview.

UVAHoo- What ended up happening with that interview? Were you able to work anything out? It's hard enough to get interviews so it is really awful if they have rescinded their offer. I hope things work out.

Well, the secretary at Emory said faculty have already been contacting applicants for interviews. She doesn't know if they've made their final decisions yet, though.

I guess that means I can cross Emory off my list... the only place I actually wanted to go to. 🙁

Well I just talked to the admission secretary at Virginia's Curry clinical program. She said that all invites to interviews will be out by next Monday, Feb. 6th. She also said they had the largest group of applicants they have ever had this year. Over 200 for 8 spots. Their interview dates are Friday Feb. 17th and Friday Feb. 24th (the website has last year's dates listed). Of course I already have inerviews on both those dates- but I would try to re-schedule one of them if I got a golden ticket (invite). Just one more week to wait! I can't wait until all of this waiting is over. Has any heard from Kent State or Bowling Green?

I feel you on the month of February- so far I'm out about 700 dollars in traveling expenses 😱 ...and I haven't even MADE it to these places yet.

I must say though, I think you did a damn good job picking your programs if the interview dates don't conflict with other programs! I'm surprised you haven't had to turn anything down. I guess it will be a crazy but awesome month for you. Good luck!

Yeah, actually, I feel really lucky that the dates have worked out so far. I've had to ask programs to be slightly flexible, but everything has been good so far. The travel is going to be slightly horrific, though. I'm on the east coast now, and I have 2 interviews on the west coast, with travel each way basically taking a full day. If I had no other committments besides interviewing, it wouldn't be such a problem, but research doesn't conduct itself, sadly.

To answer other questions, I heard from Berkeley via the department first, then the professor. Interviews are on the weekend of 2/24, so there is still time for contact, and I wouldn't assume that all invites have gone out. In regard to Drexel profs, I am for some reason reluctant to post names on the forum -- sorry.

Baylor's interview offers will go out the week of February 6th for a February 24th, 25th, or 27th interview. Has anyone heard from Kent State, Bowling Green or UVA-Curry?

You didn't happen to hear anything from them, did you? I'm just hoping it's not an email about something missing from my application! But my understanding is that they only require phone interviews because they are so far out.

I received the email from Suffolk, as well. It seemed somewhat silly to me, to invite people to apply for a scholarship who weren't even getting interviews, but the folks at Suffolk stand by the statement that everyone who applied is invited for this scholarship. I'm not sure... Hopefully they're fibbing and it means we both have interview invites coming, but I'm not letting myself get too excited yet. 🙂
