Interviews?

I received the email from Suffolk, as well. It seemed somewhat silly to me, to invite people to apply for a scholarship who weren't even getting interviews, but the folks at Suffolk stand by the statement that everyone who applied is invited for this scholarship. I'm not sure... Hopefully they're fibbing and it means we both have interview invites coming, but I'm not letting myself get too excited yet. 🙂

I received that email from Suffolk as well. That would be great if it meant we all made the first cut! haha.

Hello everyone...

I just received an interview invite from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas' clinical Ph.D. program. The interview is on February 25 with a social event the night before. Anyone else applying / interviewing there?

Hi Guys and Gals,

I'm new, but I've been watching this forum like my life depended on it for the past week. I am a clinical applicant and I just got a call from U Pittsburgh about an interview. Yeey! Anyone else heard from them?

Has anyone heard about interview invitations being sent out for any of the following clinical programs?
UVa
Rutgers
U Miami (clinical health)
U New Mexico
SDSU (clinical health)
U Kansas
U Washington (adult clinical)

Thanks for your feedback and good luck with your programs!

I've heard from UW (adult clinical). I applied to a few other schools in common with you and I haven't heard anything yet.

SDSU (clinical health)? tell me more about this program, im unfamiliar with it. Are they accredited?

UVA arts and sciences has already sent out invites for interviews and Curry will be extending them this week by next Monday (didn't know which program you meant). I don't know about the others.

It's the SDSU / UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology, and they have several tracks (like dev/children, health psych, experimental psych). They're accredited and ranked pretty high.

here's their site: http://www.psychology.sdsu.edu/doctoral/

Congrats to all getting interviews!

I just wanted to pipe in for the people who aren't getting calls/emails and are getting anxious about it.

1) Its still early.

2) Not getting into a program usually means you didn't fit in the lab you applied to and thus you wouldn't have been happy there anyway.

3) Not getting in anywhere is NOT the worst thing in the world! There are TONS of research jobs available for BA/BS level graduates who want valuable experience and are WILLING TO LOOK FOR IT. Many of these positons, especially at university based institutions, will offer the opportunity to publish or at least be listed as a co-author on anything produced from the lab. Completing a 2 or 3 year position makes your application for grad school look EXPONENTIALLY better than it did right out of college. And, you'll be making money!

A couple of great places to be an RA (all on the East Coast, only because I am most familiar with that region):

I am having my interview at denver on 10th Feb with a social event. Any sugesstions what to be worn for dinner.

Cajal, i was contacted by phone on saturday morning (completely unexpected, i usually switch from my i-hope-i-hear-about-an-interview mode to my relaxed mode on weekends, but now i know better!)

Thanks for the info. I called and was told that if I was to be invited, I'd hear by the end of this week. U Denver's child clinical program is one of my top choices so I'm still hoping! 🙂

Has anyone heard anything from the University of Cincinnati?

I know that U of KS and U of NM-Albuquerque have not yet extended interviews. Both programs aren't planning on sending invites until Feb. Hope this helps!

Does anyone know if or when Univ Penn is sending out invites?

Business casual - khakis, black pants, etc. Not a suit but not jeans and sneakers.

I have a few social events that specify "jeans are fine"- so in those instances I'm going to wear jeans and a cute top. If I'm really on the ball, I might bring something "nicer" and then confer with my graduate student about which is more appropriate to wear.

If there is no such disclaimer in your letter, I'd take the aforementioned advice. If anything, it's probably better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed, even at the social event.

All I know is that the secretary told me last week tuesday the 24th that invitations were not sent out. If you find out anything keep me posted.

Thanks clinpsychgal, I wrote to the student coordinator for the recruiting weekend with few questions and she didn't reply. Do u think I should call her although the matter is not very urgent. Also what do u understand by recruiting weekend , do u think I can ask her wether there is still an elimination round.

Regarding clothing: Its up to you but my two cents: you don't want to come off as too anxious. I would perhaps just ask the grad student you are staying with when you get there. If you don't feel comfortable doing so or if they don't specify in the email.. I'd go with the business casual suggestion.

Regarding recruitment weekend: I think a recruiting weekend sounds pretty promising- otherwise, why wouldn't they just call it an interview? But, then again, I don't know anything you don't. I'd search the website to in the FAQ section to see if the recruiting weekend is discussed in greater detail. If that doesn't work, maybe you could call the graduate secretary/coordinator and ask him/her?

My understanding is that recruiting weekend is just code for interview, but the programs are trying to convey that it's purpose is for you to find out about them rather than just them finding out about yet. Remember that the interviews can be a great source of information for you to figure it if you like place X or not ... you get to ask questions too, it's not just a one way street.

Hello. Just wanted to let everyone know that Northern Illinois University is having interviews on Friday, February 24, 2006 from 8:30AM to 1:30PM. There is also an informal student get-together the night before (2/24/2006) at 7PM. NIU just contacted me this afternoon via email.

Anyone else applying / interviewing that day?

i just received an invite to interview at Arizona State. Their dates are 2/24 and 2/27... the 24th conflicts with my interview at denver, and i wanted to leave the 27th open for san diego... just in case i get an interview (it's my top choice)

to all the people who have had conflicting interview dates, how have you been able to resolve that? thanks!

Congrats! I will be at ASU on Friday.

I would not turn down an interview with ASU just because SDSU/UCSD MIGHT call. Do you know that SDSU/UCSD will have their recruiting day on the 27th? I was told that they wouldn't send out invitations until the middle of February so I don't think they would schedule their weekend so soon. I could be wrong though...

I'm also wondering how people are resolving conflicting interview dates...

I was invited to a half-day info session (which may be a disguised interview like someone said) but I'm flying out to see my sick grandmother that day.
I wrote an email thanking them and explaining things and asking if there was an alternative. She said they realize not all applicants can attend and that not attending "doesn't necessarily preclude you from ultimately attending."

Great. Thanks for the unequivocal response!
I don't know if this school will have a separate interview date.

I don't know if this school will have a separate interview date.

I was offered two interviews on the same weekend. I decided to attend the interview for the first school that asked me because I had already agreed to attend and that seemed like the fairest thing to do. I explained this to the other program and was told that decision would not be held against me and was able to set up phone interviews with some of the faculty.Of course, its much better to go in person becasue you can get a much better feel for the program, but I realized that I could probably still do that, if I'm lucky enough to get an offer.

Has anyone heard from Fordham yet? I know they were planning to send email invites sometime this week for a first interview date on Friday.

Also, did anyone have an early interview (before the application deadlines arrived)? I managed to have one at my top choice (not a [/I]top school) through connections at my job (I'm an RA). I'm asking this because it's weird feeling like I'm not part of the interview process that's now occuring. Granted, I don't know if this school has offered interviews yet because I haven't been able to get through to the secretary. So maybe I'll be contacted again to interview with the committee, or maybe I won't because my application didn't pass muster, or maybe I won't because I already interviewed....ARGH! Anyway, so many of you are rockin' it with the interview process, and hear I am in this sort of floating purgatory. Just wondering if anyone else feels disconnected.

Yes, I heard from them last night by email. They had us choose when we wanted to come for an interview- this friday, or next thursday 10th or friday 11th.

Hey Everyone!

I got an interview invitation from U of KY-Louisville on Tuesday, but have not heard anything from my other 13 schools (including Harvard, UMSL, SLU, WashU, Yale, U of Penn, U of IA, U of KS, UM-Boulder, UNM-Albuquerque, BGSU, SUNY-Albany, and U of CO-Boulder)

Hang in there everyone! It's still early! Good luck to all!

SLU interviews will be march 16th 17th, and 20th

I have also applied in Umichigan Ann Arbor. I believe they will be sending out invitations next week.

Did you get an invite from the graduate secretary? How long ago? My family lives only a couple hours away from SLU so I was kinda hoping for that one. It's close to home and wouldn't be expensive to get there. Oh well, I still have UMSL on the list. Anyone hear from Univ of MO-St. Louis? I remember someone mentioning a University of MO interview, but I don't know which campus they were referring to. Anyway, congrats cmuhooligan!!

I have heard from 5 of the 9 schools that I applied to in one way or another... It got to the point where I just politely declined the offer to attend the interview at my "safety" school (for financial reasons). We might still do a phone interview but all the same, I realize this essentially takes me out of the running of getting an acceptance there.

Now, I'm not recommending that others take this route. But, for me, it came down to: not wanting to pay to fly to another place when I'm already racking up interview expenses; my recent realization that this safety school wouldn't meet my career goals in the capacity that the other programs would; and, feeling comfortable that at this point in my career, I would rather keep my research assistantship and reapply next year than go to a place where I may not be as happy/have as many opportunities.

I'm not trying it jinx myself here. I know the odds are stacked against me at getting into any of the programs that I will be interviewing at. I've just re-evaluated my options and decided that this is a decision that I would be ok with, even if I didn't get in to any of the other programs to which I applied.

Good luck to everyone else in the coming months!

Getting interview calls from 5 schools is really an achievement. I was wondering are u not payed for travel. I am going for an interview and y travel expenses will be reimbursed. I hope u get into your choice of program. All the best.

Mell,

I don't know how often he checks this post- so just to fill you in, I think he's a current graduate student there and he got in last year. If you check the posts from last interview season, you can find out around when he heard, which gives you a better idea of when you will hear. I bet it was later in Feb. Good luck

Clinical programs rarely reimburse for travel expenses from what I've heard, and also from what I've recently experienced. I've now been lucky enough to receive 7 interview invitations, and only one has included an offer of partial reimbursement for the plane ticket.

Needless to say, I'm not going to accept all of the invitations, for reasons similar to those described by clinpsychgirl, plus another reason that is particularly relevant for me -- time. I'm trying to complete research toward a masters thesis, which is a fairly impossible task when you're gone for 3 days every weekend. My big question now is how many interviews are enough to feel safe that you'll get an offer from somewhere... Playing the probabilities, it seems like I should get an offer from at least 1 out of 4, given that most profs interview 3 or 4 candidates for each spot. Tricky math.

Thanks for the well wishes. I hope you get into the program of your choice too.

According to a slightly outdated version of insiders guide, 90% of clinical and counseling programs do not reimburse travel expenses of any kind. So you are very lucky if your programs fall in that 10%.

One of my schools (VCU) is paying for a night in a hotel, which I think is pretty awesome. They are also arranging for a travel buddies (AKA current grad students) to transport the applicants around Richmond- good deal! Most of the other schools I am interviewing at let interviewees stay with current graduate students- so this eases the traveling expenses somewhat.

What's killing me is that the cost of flying has really shot up in the last year. Its costing me damn near 400 dollars to fly to one of my places. I just keep reminding myself that this is a good investment. 🙄

Seriously, I have spent $800 already to fly to two places. I consider it a good investment though 🙂

UVAHoo- What ended up happening with that interview? Were you able to work anything out? It's hard enough to get interviews so it is really awful if they have rescinded their offer. I hope things work out.

Sorry for the delay in responding, it was only resolved yesterday. I ended up writing her back reiterating my interest and expressing that I really wanted to work it out, although I wasn't sure if I would be able to. I really think missing part of my Penn State events would not have been a wise choice for me, I didn't want to jepordize my chances there by juggling two interviews (esp since I am really interested in them) and I did make a commitment to them more than a month in advance. I'm really not sure what exactly transpired, but the bottom line is now I am going at an alternate time to Vanderbilt. She thought she couldn't have anyone come at another time but she talked to her clinical director and now I'm going. My best guess is she talked to them after I expressed how interested I was and wanted to come to see if it would be a good fit. My advice for those with conflicts, explain your previous commitment but tell them just how interested you are and how much you'd be willing to work with them to come at another time. As someone mentioned, there's always the phone interview option. Obviously not the best, but at least it's something. I really hope it goes more smoothly for those of you who do have conflicts.
Some of you are hitting it out of the ballpark! Congrats!

Also, I've heard that U. of Florida's interview weekend isn't until March and they are just now reviewing applications. Not sure when invitations would go out, but obviously not yet.

I have recently heard from the following programs about interviews and just wanted everyone to know about the dates:

Utah Feb 24-26
Arizona State Feb 24-27
University of Florida March 4-6

Additionally here are some others
USF Feb 3
UCONN Feb 8

Good luck to everyone on interviews and thank you for quick postings

I'm very happy to not have to cross SLU's program off my list. Drs. Handal and Vander Wal have some really interesting work under their belts

Thanks again,
