So today I "have been offered a rare and wonderful opportunity to study at the most prestigious school of pharmacy in the nation," but the number of prereqs I'm required to take will be pretty much impossible to complete. The osaca says the algebra based physics sequence I took at a major out of state university is not equivalent to those taken at a California community college. Does anyone have any advice about arguing with osaca or am I doomed to spend the summer retaking physics at a cc in ca?

If I were you, I would not let an opportunity like that go to waste cuz you might regret it in the future.

If I were you, i will retake physics in a CC in CA

But the courses are the same courses I already took and disliked immensely. Why is it necessary to retake physics at a school ucsf has an agreement with? Do CCs in Ca transfer credit in? I have the same problem with a few other courses too. I'm baffled I was even interviewed and accepted actually.

Maybe... you can write an email to UCSF administrator and explain your situation. Then.. see what they say.

Good Luck!

I tried that after my interview, but maybe now that I've been accpeted they will be more receptive. They seemed pretty inflexible about what specific courses were acceptable. Are any other out of staters having similar issues?

If you want to attend UCSF badly enough, you'll do whatever it takes to make it happen.

Because the school is requiring you to. That's good enough reason if you want to go.

Maybe you can ask UCSF if you can do a P/NP grading scale for the class? I'm not sure if they'll accept that, but it'll alleviate some stress for the summer if you are able to. Good luck!

you can take all of your prereqs for UCSF for P/NP. At the UCSF info day, they said that this is NOT recommended when you are still applying (i.e. before acceptance) because they can only assume you did the bare minimum to achieve the bare minimum passing grade. Thus, since you're admitted already, what the heck, just take it all P/NP.

I know one of my classmates had to retake like 3 classes before matriculating in the fall. Granted, physics sucks...lol...but its a necessary evil I would have to say. OSACA is pretty stringent on the pre-req's but you can give it a shot...my friend, again, had to retake a bunch and she didn't enjoy it at all! It's worth though my friend...private message me if you want anymore advice...see ya in the fall!

I don't know what you decided, but if osaca says it's not acceptable, chances are, it's not. If you have gotten a final decision from the people at osaca, most likely it's final. I would take the physics course that is recommended by them, and take it for a letter grade, NOT P/NP. I would not suggest that you do P/NP unless you have a written OK from someone in the administration that that is acceptable. If you do it on your own w/o letting them know or asking, it is always possible that your spot can be offered to someone else. They are very clear about following directions and going by the rules, and I have heard of people being denied their provisional admission b/c they didn't take the class they were supposed to during the summer, and their spot in the class was given to the next person on the wait list.

Hope this helps- feel free to PM me, too. and hope to see you this fall!

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. UCSF would not budge so I declined my rare and wonderful opportunity. That is one more spot for those wait listed. Good luck!!

Yeah, I declined UCSF this past week for the same reason--too many prereqs that I've already taken, just not in California. Guess that makes two spots for the waitlistees!
