I guess I should do this too, so people can stop thinking I'm just intruding on their forums without ever saying who I am.... haha

I am 21 years old and female, originally from the Los Angeles area. I go to undergrad in Virginia. My major is Biology. And I have applied this year! I am interested in Equine, but just about everything else as well. Oh yeah, and I love SDN and all the supportive people on here! 😀

I am a southern california local, 27 years old and this was my second year applying. I was rejected by 2 schools and then interviewed at Western and then rejected (which was better than last year!). I will be graduating with a BS in Animal Science and a minor in microbiology this spring. I work at the happiest place on earth- which comes in handy because I have a 2 year old, as well as a veterinary pathology lab. I am interested in research and am involved in alot of research projects at my university. Food safety is another one of my favorite subjects.

Most of my experience is with horses, particullarly racetrack medicine but I have had the opportunity to work with the livestock on campus and I absolutly love it!
 
Well, guess I'll introduce myself as well, since I've been lurking while trying to decide if I should apply this cycle. You guys all seem pretty nice, so I suppose I'll de-lurk 🙂

I'm a 26 year old non-traditional student. I'm a junior (transfer student) at a research university, which has been fun so far. It's quite an interesting experience to learn from the people actually doing the research and writing the text books.

I'll only have around 200-300 hours of actual vet experience by October, but I do have thousands of LA/ SA experience hours from previous jobs (I worked at a training stable for several years, then at an animal shelter for a few more years). My low number of vet exp is pretty much why I'm uncertain about applying.

I also love to draw and paint.
 
I don't know if I've even posted enough to merit introducing myself, but I'll do it anyway. I actually found this forum moments after the first person posted that UCD interview invites were coming out. Luckily, I was saved from anxiety-induced insanity as I received my invite a few minutes later. *bullet dodged*

I just turned 22 (the day after my UCD interview—timed that one purposely)
I'm a senior in undergrad, will graduate with a BS in Biology—widely regarded in my small school as one of the nerdiest (smartest?) students, but this is sadly a myth
Obviously I applied this cycle, my first app, and I've been accepted to CSU and I'm still waiting for Davis (my IS)...5 more days
I've only lived in CA since I started college, before that I was Alaska grown...miss it daily
I plan to go equine and specialize within it, but no solid plans in that area yet
I've got an appendix mare, and we've just started dressage; also adopted a greyhound on New Year's

I'm not the most outgoing person in a room (or forum) but I love meeting people and making friends so drop me a PM if we do or do not have things in common 🙂

FWIW, I got most of my experience the summer before I applied. I decided late I wanted to go to vet school and spent the last year and a half catching up. I got a full time job as a tech at an ER and that raked me up about 900 hours in one summer (something like that, not sure of specifics) + volunteered in a shelter clinic. I received 9 interview invites this cycle and 4 offers, so I wouldn't let that hold you back 👍 If you can be flexible, you can get lots of hours the summer before you apply. Good luck!

I'm not sure that I'll be able to hold a job this summer because I'll be cramming in several 5 week classes during the summer quarter. I do currently volunteer at a shelter clinic, though, and they always need help so I can show up at any time. I guess I'll just have to spend more time there, especially when I've got a break from school. Do you think 500 hours a decent goal?

Now I just have to find time to study for/ take the GRE...
 
Sooo...yeah....I suppose I'll throw in my $0.02 here.

I'm 27, female, Texas-born and raised. I have a BS in Animal Science (2005), a Masters in Ag Education (2008), and a Texas Teacher's Certification in Secondary Ag Science. All of these were earned at Texas A&M. God that place has taken thousands upon thousands of dollars of my money... I love being an Aggie, but I'm not sure I ever want to set another toe in any of the classroom buildings or the financial aid office ever again.

I applied to and was unceremoniously rejected from TAMU vet school in 2008, but was accepted to Mississippi State and Ross U this year. Mississippi, here I come. Woot.

I'm a full time (uncertified) technican at a mixed practice clinic in rural Central Texas. I've been there five years and I know I will bawl when I have to leave in June. I love both of my bosses, and they've become family to me after all this time.

My mom went into labor with me at the Houston Livestock Show of 1984. She and my dad were exhibiting our open-show Limousin bulls for our ranch at the time. Consequently, I was literally raised in a barn with cattle.

I have two Australian Cattle Dogs, a mother-son pair. They are my pride & joy. The son was one of a litter that I raised last year; I ended up keeping him because I discovered he was deaf. I have been learning ASL and using it to train him. He's very smart. 🙂 I also have a tortoiseshell diva of the feline persuasion. She's quite the snoot, except when she wants your attention. Then she's in your face and on your desk standing on your keyboard until you pet her to her liking.

I love to travel, going to music concerts (mostly rock), reading historical fiction novels, and watching the History channel. I'm a huge nerd for history. My favorite musician is a guy named David Cook. (if you know who this is...don't judge me. 😉 ). Oh, and I hate current country music.

Fun tidbit- I ran my very first half marathon last year. And I used to absolutely despise running. Now I like to run a 5K every other month or so. I have an extensive tshirt collection brewing... 😀

I think 500 hours is definitely a realistic goal. Don't make yourself crazy while taking classes and such, but do make sure to spend every free moment at the clinic! And make sure you really focus on your personal statement and your application. It's not so many hours as what you really get out of the experience, so make sure your application reflects that 👍

I am a 25 year old male. I grew up in Fargo, North Dakota. I graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN with a BA in Biology. I researched E. coli for two years at ISU CVM and the U of Minnesota.
Then I got this crazy idea to become a teacher. So, I joined Teach For America. I taught at the most violent school in America for a couple years, and I spent a lot of time shadowing veterinarians. Now I work as a technology consultant for the school district I used to work.
I enjoy being outside, hiking, and I am currently learning how to bull ride. My life long aspiration is to become a clinical path veterinarian by day, and a mash-up artist by night.
 
Ooooh! I didn't know this thread existed!

I am a 29 year old applicant, born and raised in Ohio. This was my fourth cycle applying and in the middle of filling out my Ross Univ application I received my acceptance email for THE Ohio State Univ. 😀😀😀

I have a BS in Biology and an MS in Molecular Biology/Virology and have been working as a research tech since 2006. I've also starting working as a vet assistant at the place I shadowed, and have been there for almost 3 years. I only work on Saturdays, which means I never remember where anything goes and I am scared to answer the phone because then I will have to KNOW something.

I wish I had discovered this forum when I was still an undergrad (did it exist back then? no idea) because I would've learned SO MUCH MORE than my undergrad pre-health advisor told me. But I'm really on here to kill time at work b/c I can't wait to leave the academic research life behind.

Oh and I also volunteer at a no-kill shelter on Wednesdays, which makes Wednesdays my FAV day of the week 👍👍👍

I've been here a while, but figure I'll officially introduce myself.
I'm a 21 year old female, Rhode Island resident. I have no state school and no contract seats.
I'm a junior finishing up my degree in Wildlife and Conservation Bio with a minor in Animal Science.
In an ideal world I'd end up working at a zoo, or better yet in conservation, but I am a realistic human being. I'll probably end up in SA, maybe specializing, we'll see what happens.
I'm applying this next cycle to the following schools (I think) Wisconsin, Mizzou, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, maybe Tufts. That's pretty much the order I'd say from top choice down. It's mostly based on price, let me be honest.
I work as a tech (uncertified) in a SA/Exotics hospital as well as in a wildlife rehab center. I'm going to be volunteering with a zoo vet this spring/summer which I'm very excited about. I probably have about 2000 hours veterinary and 2000 animal at the moment including SA, exotics, wildlife, equine (animal, not veterinary).
I foster kittens and puppies and absolutely love it. I'm waiting patiently for the kitten season to start because I miss them terribly. I rehab some wildlife, but try to avoid it because it gets really overwhelming when I'm working with wildlife full time and really want to go home and take a break! I did rehab a bunch of baby owls for the first time last year and those were REALLY fun. My favorite residents have been the baby beaver we had two years ago and the baby fishers we had last year. I'm excited to start up again!

Im 26 years old and this is my first year applying.
I have been a licensed veterinary technician since 2006 and love it but have always wanted to be a veterinarian.
I worked as a tech while getting my bachelors in animal science in 2009 and then have worked full time as a tech in an emergency/referral practice for the last few years.
I just got married to an awesome and supportive man who has encouraged me to follow my dream of being a veterinarian so here I am after a bit of a break from school.

I had dairy goats growing up and I hope to be a small animal/small ruminant veterinarian. And/or emergency veterinarian as I really have grown to love emergency medicine over the years. I also would love to own my own practice one day...

I raise puppies for guiding eyes for the blind, which is an awesome and rewarding experience. We raised a small black lab who is in guide dog college right now, and are working with a german shepard now.

I also have fostered for a couple of litters of kittens relinquished at the emergency clinic. Which is how I got my cat Lily. I've been "fostering" her for 4 years now...hehe

I spent a year in Belgium as an exchange student and would call myself proficient in french. I'd recommend spending some time overseas to anyone! It was a great experience.

I work with the Guide Dog Foundation, so very similar! I've been doing 1-day and weekend camps with German Shepherds and they are trying to get me my own to raise next semester. 🙂

If not, it might be a poodle hopefully.
 
Thought I might introduce myself too 😀

I'm a 22 year old Australian, in my 4th (and second last) year of vet school over here in Ozzieland. I wanted to be a vet when I was younger, but was deterred by the idea of animals in pain, and so embarked on numerous other ideas in my childhood. In grade 10 I did work experience at a vet (for fun!) and got hooked on the industry. That clinic offered me a job as a nursing assistant at the ripe old age of 15 and I worked there for the next 3 years before being accepted to vet school after graduating year 12.

I then made the difficult decision to move across the other side of the country when I was 17 to a city I had never been to and knew no-one... only to discover its one of the greatest places on earth! I love living in perth and now live with my partner (a perth native and electrician) and my cat whom we are both completely enamoured with.

In my spare time I like to go camping, dirt biking, snorkelling and scuba diving, knitting, crotcheting and sewing. I am currently obsessed with the walking dead, criminal minds and the black keys. I am marking my 7th year in the veterinary industry this year and since my first job with a specialist surgeon have worked in many different kinds of clinics - big busy ones, small quiet ones, emergency and referral centres. I also love cows and can't wait to get out of rentals so I can have a dog (so want a newfoundland!) My goal for this year (aside from passing 4th year!) is to place my first central line 😀 Fingers crossed!!!

Hello All,
Im 25 years old from northern California. I'm going to a community college doing all the science Pre-reqs. I will be applying to RVC on the next app cycle. I have about 5 months of hands on experience working with small animal.
I Love this website, it has helped me with everything i needed to know about Vet Med and everyone is so supportive.
 
So, I've been lurking for a while (pretty much since VMCAS opened this year) and joined fairly recently so I guess I should finally introduce myself...

I'm a 21 year old female (I'll be 22 on Easter 🙂 ), born in NY and raised in Texas. I'm currently a senior at Notre Dame and will graduate this May with a B.S. in Science, double majoring in biology and sociology. I was on the varsity fencing team all four years, which has been an experience by itself. While I love ND, I absolutely despise the winters here and the snow and miss the sunshine way too much. All I can say is thank you TAMU for being located somewhere warm and sunny.

I started out volunteering at a local animal shelter and shadowing my current vet/boss and knew that this was the right path for me. Most of my interests lie with SA medicine, but I've also done some undergrad research and am kinda thinking about the DVM/PhD route (still not sure tho). We'll see what happens at vet school 🙂

When school and sports don't take up my life, I enjoy reading, going to the movies, knitting, cross-stitching, swimming, and basically doing anything the involves sunshine (I've been deprived a little too long...). Oh, and I absolutely love White Collar.

I have a blue-heeler mix named Rain who I swear is addicted to walking. She will literally follow us around the house all day with this look on her face until one of us finally caves. We don't even mention that word "walk" around her cuz then she'll going running, get her leash and then stare until you finally walk out the door with her. Crazy, but adorable.

Dont let the low hours get you down, when I applied last fall I only had 190 and got 2 acceptances and 2 wait lists! Yes you are reading that right 1-9-0. The key is making yourself stand out in other ways which from your other experiences you should be able to do. Besides, you miss 100% of the shots you dont take. Worst thing that will happen is they will say come back next year with more hours.

Well that's certainly encouraging! If you don't mind my asking, do you think your GPA/ GRE scores set you apart as well, or do you think you made yourself stand out more through your personal statement?
 
I think I introduced myself on the other lurker thread.. but not in a whole lot of detail.. so here it goes:

I'm 23, female, Texas born and raised. Actually I'm from West Texas which I don't think counts as "Texas" after having moved 13 hours away down to east TX (close to Houston area). Huge change. I graduated last May with a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Agriculture-Animal Science (used to be Animal Science Pre-Veterinary emphasis until they revamped the entire degree set-up). I'm working part-time right now at a local vet clinic and I've been there almost 3 years. I love it there (even on days when certain coworkers drive me crazy). My bosses and coworkers go out of their way to remind me how appreciated I am which is awesome. My bf was in the military (Air Force) for about 4 years.. long distance sucked but we made it work, thank goodness he was stationed 6 hours away in Oklahoma.We've been together about 7 years and change (high school sweethearts) He's moved down here with me to start school for criminal justice. He's not entirely sure if he's going to move to College Station with me yet. TAMU is 40 minutes away from me, so that's nothing compared to 6 hours. We'll make it work. I'm also in charge of my mother's care. She's multidisabled. She is visually impaired, though sometimes I swear she can see better than me. She's using a walker right now because of her back issues. And she has a bunch of other stuff going on.. so when I'm not at work or school I'm shuffling around to Doctor's appointments with her. She's going to stay here while I'm in vet school at least through my 1st year. I know i'd be distracted if she came with but we are doing everything we can before I leave to help her. Plus, I'll be in probably every weekend with her.

I have 2 cats. Angel, a long hair Siamese, though some say Balinese (my avatar), 2 years old. and Reeses, a calico that will be a year old in July. I also have a 9 year old chihuahua, Jinjer.

I love jigsaw puzzles. I like to glue them, frame them, and send them to people as gifts. I also love to bake and I dabble in some gardening too.

Wow, didn't mean to be so long-winded here :laugh:
 
Hi all, i joined back in Nov of last year but haven't been very active. I'm a 23 year old female, graduated 2011 with a BS in Animal Science from UC Davis. This is my first time applying, and i applied to five schools. Rejected from U-Penn, declined interviews for Western and Washington after my Ohio acceptance notice. Now i'm waitlisted for UCD..(fingers crossed!) Small animal focused, and i would say about 90% of my experience is with small animals, and the other 10% scattered between large animal, exotics, and laboratory.

Right now i'm doing some research in a mitochondria focused lab on campus.. and when i'm not working, i'm usually taking hikes with my dog, working out/running, or just hanging out. i plan to run a half marathon sometime this year and hopefully a full marathon towards the end of this year! muay thai classes are starting soon too!!

I have a yellow lab named crispy (more like golden.. hence the name), a siamese mix baby boy named jello (looks like a short hair ragdoll), and a calico girl named butter. this is where my username comes from! don't ask me why crispy isn't in there.. i have more love for her than my two obnoxious cats 70% of the time, haha

also wanted to tell everyone that i appreciate them being very helpful and supportive 100% of the time!

You should run the Nike Women's half!! Its in October, and there is a lottery to get in, but as a college student you can secure a spot at half price, with a college code! PM me for details if interested..my friend is a Nike Ambassador and will be giving us the details about it when they are released.. It is so much fun!

I guess I never did this either....

-25 year old female from south Florida, currently living in upstate NY (not far from my pal JMJ^^😉). Everyone always asks if I'm "an idiot" for making that move, and most of the time my answer is "Yes". My BF was in the military in FL for 7 years (where we met), and when he got out, he wanted to move back home (NY) and I said , why the heck not!? 😀

- Currently working as a biochemist at Bristol-Myers Squibb. My job is awesome and the idea of leaving it for debt gets harder and harder every day :scared:.

- I have a rescue boxer mixed named Ollie... love of my life 😍 and a newly rescued mastiff/pit pup named Thor who I just adore (woah that rhymed)! Sweetest thing EVER! And a feisty 7 lb kitty named Rufus that I found in a trash can 🙁. Most gorgeous cat ever! Greets me at the door before my dogs.... 😕 and drinks the left over water from my glass every morning .
- I have been singing, acting, and playing the guitar and piano most of my life. I love being on stage!
- Fun Fact (at least K-state thought it was): I was in the Macy's Day Parade 4 times.
- I play soccer and swim (don't ask about the butterfly... we're enemies 😡)
- I love photography and bought a much too expensive camera before my trip to Ireland 2 years ago.
- I am a HUGE sports fan (especially football, even though my team is dreadful) GO BROWNS! 😀
- I love to travel, love wine, and love a good sense of humor.

Don't think I have done this yet...

I am 28, female, and lived in nor cal my whole life. I am left handed, a Capricorn, an INFJ, and everyone thinks I look like I am 17. :/

I was raised by my grandparents (legal guardians) who has since past away, consequently I don't have the best background, and put off school for a long time to care for them, but here I am.

I am completing gen ed at a CC, and transferring to a univ soon, majoring in Biology with a Zoology concentration. I work as kennel as a small animal hospital, the work itself bores me out of my mind, but its great to see so many patients come thru the door, usually more than routine.

I am really interested in avian, wildlife, food animal, and small animal medicine...not into lab or equine really. I am not sure what kind of vet I want to be, but hoping ill find opportunity in the mixed animal field.

I foster cats, find homes for cats, dogs, bunnies and chickens. I have 2 cats, who are my kids, and one foster kitten who is 9 days old.

Hi all 😀

I feel like I'm one of the younger people on here. I'm 19, turning 20 in May, and a sophomore. I'm majoring in animal physiology and behavior, and I'm in the honors program at my school. I'm so glad I discovered this website a few days ago; it's already helped me out a bit. I'm currently tackling trying to find vets to shadow over the summer, and I am also going to be volunteering at a shelter over the summer as well. Once the school year picks back up next August, I'm going to try and shadow during the semester, as well as volunteer. Hopefully I'll have all the hours I'll need by the time I need to apply 🙂 I've become a bit intimated by reading about the hours those who have been accepted have accumulated.

There's also a very strong possibility I'll be working in a research lab next fall that studies birds, so that experience will help me a lot! Maybe I'll be able to do my thesis on an animal-related topic as well.

I have one dog, a golden retriever, who is turning 13 this summer. My cat is turning 4 in May, and she is basically the love of my life. I dislike being away from her while I'm at school (I go to school across the country from my hometown). I'm a huge book nerd; I'll plow through books over the summer. I just really enjoy going out and having fun when I have the chance since my courses have been brutal this semester.

Now I will continue creeping on all the other threads 🙂

I am on SDN constantly these days so I will stop creepin' and introduce myself:

I am a 21 year old female from western Washington state, in my senior year majoring in biology. I have wanted to be a vet since forever, and more recently am thinking that I want to eventually start my own (possibly mobile) clinic focused on geriatric and hospice care. I LOVE old dogs especially lumpy old labs. I applied this past cycle for class of 2016 (my 1st app), and I am waitlisted at WA, OR and WI which is why I started checking SDN so much. You all seem so friendly and helpful that I am trying to get more involved on here.

I worked as a vet assistant at a small animal clinic for 5 years and work at a veterinary pathology lab currently - I really miss seeing whole live patients+owners instead of biopsies and cultures of patients at the lab 🙁

I have also spent some time with wildlife, I'm especially interested in birds.

My pets: 2 old pomeranians, 1 icelandic sheepdog (bit chubby - always tell her she shouldn't have swallowed that whole corgi), 1 swirly tabby cat, 3 guinea pigs, and 25 chickens. All live with my parents - getting myself an icelandic sheepdog pup this spring.

If I don't get off the waitlists, not quite sure what I will do because for now I am telling myself I will get in this year to preserve my sanity until April 15th!

Awww, yes! Old dogs are the best dogs.

The clinic where I work does boarding also and the techs are responsible for boarders with more needs, which means generally sick/old dogs. We also get the not-fully-vaccinated puppies, but when it comes down to it, I'd rather an old dog than a crazy young puppy. Especially the super sweet greying out labs and lab mixes.

I have always wanted to go into the geriatric side of veterinary medicine, but wasn't sure if really existed or was just in my head. I have only met one other person (a guy at my Western interview) who has shared this interest with me. We ended up talking about running a geriatric practice while sitting at the airport bar for 3 hours :laugh: That's really cool that you are interested in that too. And I think the mobile aspect of it is particularly smart!

I've been doing what I can to get hours at a nearby vet and shelter. Haven't made the decision to make the leap, as the debt issue is overwhelming here in Cali, even in-state. I've grown up with and had dogs almost all my life, from poodles to a St. Bernard and can't imagine my life without them.

I've lurked here for a while to get a better understanding of what it takes, and enjoy reading about everyone's trip to their DVM.

So I guess I never really introduced myself either so here we go!

I'm a 24 year old female. I grew up outside Buffalo, NY (south of, super small town. I actually went back there to do my small animal veterinary internship for the summer of 2008). Moved to Michigan right before starting high school outside of Ann Arbor and then went onto college at Michigan State! I graduated in 2009 with a BS in Zoology and ended up moving to Chapel Hill, NC in May 2010 to start working at a research lab at Duke University. My parents had moved to Chapel Hill the day after I started my freshman year at MSU, so that was an interesting experience, feeling like an OOS student when I was technically IS, but I loved my time at MSU, definitely one of the best choices I've made. Go green!

At Duke I am researching mechanisms regulating hematopoietic stem cell self-renewal and regeneration and the relationship of the hematopoietic niche/mechanisms governing it. I basically use lots of mousey bone marrow and human cord blood to do various bone marrow transplant studies.

My research has led me to want to specialize in veterinary oncology, specifically I want to focus on canine multiple myeloma or lymphoma (haven't decided yet). This is pretty much what I yapped about in my PS and essays 🙂

I love to hike and run (avid runner since high school in both cross-country and track) and completed my first half-marathon this past November. I LOVE to cook (one of my NCSU essays was about cooking 😀), try to new things and go out to eat! I like to read (hp being my all time fave), craft, knit and all sorts of other random stuff. I really am just very easy going and love to do whatever (but I hate making decisions). I love hanging out with my family. They all live here and I love being close to all of them again. I live with my sister and her husband and their crazy two dogs and cat.

I also just got a puppy. Her name is Luna (after Luna Lovegood of course 😉 ) and she is the sweetest thing in the world (totally biased 😍)
