invited back for a second interview

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
no, but it must be good. it isn't: "let's get this kid back here to see if we hate him as much as we think we do."

i bet you get accepted.

LOL.

Nice.

where'd you get invited back?

I never heard of getting two interviews to the same school, but I don't think it's a bad thing.

I'm curious as to how it'll turn out.

Good luck.:luck:

the problem is that I already missed one day of work and paid for tranportation. I dont think it is fair to do that again if it is something like they lost my interview feedback.

Is it common to get a call two months after an interview inviting you back for a second? has any one heard of this?

Normally it means they have to clarify something that they didn't speak with you enough about in your first interview, but as people said above, that they're highly interested in you.

I would suspect you have some institutional action or misdemeanor history? A particularly low grade in one course? Some type of special circumstance?

I had a friend last year who over his 4 years in college got 2 MIPs...they both went to pretrial diversion but his in-state school asked about pretrial diversion so he reported them. After a great first interview where he wasn't asked about them, he had to get a 2nd interview at his in-state school where they grilled him like hell about those. He said the interview still went well (he prepared what he was going to say) and he was accepted shortly afterward.

thats an interesting thought but all I can think of is one C on my transcript in a liberal arts class

That's not very considerate of them, unless you live in the same city. WTF, you have to fly all the way back there because they forgot to ask you something? They can't do it over the phone? The most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

I agree, WTF. It does sound like they might have misplaced your interview reviews or something of that sort. I don't think it would be out of line for you to ask for the school to pay for your airfare to a second interview. Alternatively, you could ask if an over-the-phone interview would work.

I'm interested to hear what they have to say when you ask them why they require a second interview.

STOP. do you have any other acceptances yet? do you like this school? then do what they say and fly back and eat the cost. don't give them "attitude," you're not on solid ground enough to do that.

you have spent a fortune on this process already. why would you risk it now?

i suspect that the people giving the "tough guy" advise range in age from 20 to 22. it is very immature advice. also, easy for them to be all macho; it's your life, not theirs.

**** UP AND GO TO THE INTERVIEW AND BE NICE.

Here's what I would do:

If I really wanted to go to that school, I would suck it up and fly out there again. After doing all that it would be pretty cold for them to reject you.

If I had other options, I would call and tell them that you would be happy to conduct a phone interview or fly out to the interview on their dime, but you do not have money available to make it to a second interview.

Either way, good luck. I have never heard of a second interview, but post back to let us know how this thing turns out.

i must have done a typo. i said "shut up" not anything raunchier!!!

Yikes. While you may feel justified in asking for them to pay traveling expenses, I would be more concerned that their reaction would just be, "thanks anyway." Never heard of them being willing to pay travel expenses. There are just too many applicants who would kill to fly out there on their own dime.

Trust me, they'd have NO problem doing that.

At a school where I interviewed with three people, we were told that if your interview scores varied too much from person to person that you would be called back and ask to do a second interview. But they also said that this was rare, that it happened to less than half a dozen a year. Maybe you're in a situation like this?

Yeah, I agree that the "pay for my flight" is kind of out there. But asking YOU to fly back b/c of their mistake is just as absurd. Which is why I suggest asking for a phone interview if you don't live in the area. My interview last week set me back $700 (not counting airport food and taking my hosts out to dinner) and consumed 3 days of my life in the middle of midterms. Maybe someone else can dish out $700 on a whim, but not me.

Which is why some schools have the interviewers send your scores to the admissions office BEFORE you leave the campus, so that if you DO need that 3rd interview, it can be given to you right on the spot.

it's not a "whim" it's getting into medical school, for gosh sake!!! this is no time for pride or arrogance or saving money.

again, unless he has the luxury of them say ok, no problem, thanks anyway, then you make the trip and be nice and SHOW NO ATTITUDE.

remember: they are completely in the driver's seat. even if you have a 4.o and a 40.

An anecdote - my friend got an interview to a top-ranked school (his no.1 choice) in December and was wait listed. In May he got called up for a second interview. He flew cross-country to go there and got an acceptance a week later.

I agree it seems a bit strange to have two interviews in the fall, but I would guess you would have next to no chance of getting into this school if you do not. Like Rus said, unless you have other acceptances or are willing to dump whatever money you have already invested in this school... go.

It's possible the second interview itself is a weed-out process. Maybe they are inviting a lot of borderline acceptances back for a second interview. If they don't come for whatever reason, it would seem to make the rejection decision easy for them.

thanks everyone for the thoughts. The school is two hours away so it is not a flight but a train ticket, i guess it is more a principle then actually cost (although a day of no pay because i have no more vacation days is more then just the principle). I already have four acceptances. I really didn't think I would like this school but was pleasantly surprised at the tour. Some of your examples of top ranking schools, this makes sense for but I think it is a lot for this school to ask. The thing is that all schools will have a gray area with offers because there is no clear line of who to accept and who not to (like everyone with at least a 3.6, 31 and no less then 10 hours per week of EC- there are no clear cut offs like this where everyone above a line gets and offer and everyone below it does not). So if there is always a grey area, this would be more common but I dont think i am in a gray area. I asked the admissions officer but only got an answer of they need another look at me.
I had one friend who had a really inappropriate interview and she was invited back without even saying anything about the interviewer (maybe some one else reported him). I can think of anything too inappropriate but I wonder if they just lost my interview feedback (there was only one interview for those who suspected clashing scores)

Dude, i don't care what your stats are WE ARE ALL IN A GRAY AREA. You sound a bit arrogant. Go ahead, ask them to pay for you train ticket and see what happens.

sorry all of us wasted our time on you. Good luck with the process. I'll remember your name and will ignore all future queries for "advice."

I am so sorry, I didnt mean to say in any way I felt I should have gotten in. After two months I had accepted that i would not be offered a spot and moved on. My point with the whole gray area thing is that I think the school is not giving me the whole story because then they would have to call a lot of people back that they may need to look at again. A lot of admissions is probably depending on your gut feeling when making offers for admission and it is usually a yes or no (or waitlist of they arent sure about you)

the boys are back in town!!!!!

Hey, wait, April16, how come all your posts are post: 69?

I think that part is dynamically updated for everyone. All your posts will display the current number of posts you have made.

I would politely ask them if it is common for them to request second interviews, and why they've picked you for one.

They might tell you -- considering the time and expense they really owe you that much. I really don't think they'll hold it against you for asking.

Just wondering, since you're in south Jersey, is this a Philly school (I see the Philly skyline) or perhaps PSU? If the answer to the question is one of those two places I'd eat the cost and do it 😉.
