IOWA - Final pool
Started by MEG@COOL
My status page still works, but I am accepted already. Interesting...
I, too am in Iowa City and have not received any letter. Maybe they send out acceptances and rejections at different times? I hope not!!! DAMMIT, I have a huge test today and now I'm just going to worry!!!! 😱
I wouldn't worry. I'm thinking us Iowa City folks should be getting the letter today via regular mail. As hawk0111 suggested, if he/she received the letter on 3/7/07 via campus mail (which generally delivers same-day), then the USPS letters should come today (letters from IC to IC usually need an overnight turnaround since all letters are sent to Cedar Rapids for sorting). At least I hope so.
btw, I checked my secondary app status page again and now it works. Must have been a fluke.
Well, I guess our fates have finally been decided, then ... the mail's just delaying the notification of those fates.
Umm I got in a huge argument with the admissions coordinator about my LORs coming in like in early or mid February past the deadline that she had exteneded for me wchich was like late January...Im pretty sure that my options are closed but I did interview with them like in october...Do you think that the fight with her which was really heated, but respectful none the less, has all but eliminated any chance for a positive decision because I have this slight gut feeling and almost completly minimal that my argument with her might have helped in the end...may just be wishful thinking haha

Who honestly knows ... you'll find out soon.

Is it a big envelope for the good stuff???
Yea, that'd actually be good to know. I know from last year that the rejection comes in a thin, standard-sized envelope. Don't know about acceptance or waitlist ... anyone?
i'm freaking out!!!!
This comment is hilarious considering the text beneath your username...
I was waitlisted last year OOS, and it came in a small thin white envelope.

The acceptance envelope is a large packet of information - at least it was for the rolling admissions (my boyfriend, not me, got in around the middle of January)
How do you guys know that they will send out today? why not tomorrow? they did say "end of the week". I guess that means for me, i will have to wait until the beginning of next week to find out. I think its totally ridiculous that they send everything out w snail mail - i mean common their whole update system is on the web, so why not just tell us our decisions that way.

Hawk0111 several posts back said they received their acceptance via campus mail yesterday, so at least some decisions were sent out then. Assuming a fair number of decisions were sent via US mail yesterday, Iowa City folks can start stalking the mail carrier today.

Any out-of-state people heard yet?
Are they just sending acceptances/ rejections..or are they including more waitlist as well?
Just received the letter. In-state waitlist lucky number 13. Thin envelope. More limbo for me I guess.
I've gotta think you've got a decent shot of being accepted with that high of a number. Did they say historically how many they have historically accepted off the waitlist each year?

The letter states, "the number of alternates offered a place varies considerably from year to year," etc, but I think in past years the in-state waitlist has moved as few as 8 or so and as high as into the 20's. I'm going to go do some more research to make sure. I know the IS waitlist generally doesn't move as much as the OOS waitlist, so I'm hesitant for now.
Anyone try to get their status over the phone?
I haven't tried, but I think it said that somewhere that no final notifications would be made over the phone or via e-mail. You could give it a try if you want, but I'll just wait out the mail.

Did the letter say anything about historical norms, or is that just from your observation/research on SDN, etc.? Do you historically how much the OOS waitlist moves?

That's just from SDN research. No norms were quoted in the letter. I think OOS typically runs up in to the 30's. I'm compiling links of the last couple years' Iowa threads and will post them here shortly.
Thanks. That could be really helpful.I'm compiling links of the last couple years' Iowa threads and will post them here shortly.

Was that actual waitlist movement or factoring in the overaccepts? All the information I'm finding is mid-30's to 40's for OOS. Given that they overaccepted by about 50, that might account for the 90. I'm IS, however, so maybe I missed a detail regarding OOS movement.
Okay, here are a few links and some data. There's more to find out there, but these are the heavy-hitters:

Word on the street is that in past years IS waitlists have gone to 23, 15, 31, and 32. These are numbers from people who called admissions and asked. Last year, the IS waitlist appears to have gone into the late teens.
OOS waitlists based on popular consensus (not necessarily from calling admissions) has been in the 30's-40's-50's in the past. In 2005, per a call to admissions, 39 OOS waitlisters were pulled off. There is a suggestion that somebody in the 90's got "close" for 2006 (near the end of that first link), but there was also talk of over-acceptances of OOS, so I'm not quite sure about that, especially given the description of last year's OOS waitlist movement as "sluggish".
In any event, this is what I've found. Feel free to correct or add additional info.

Congratulations to all the new acceptances! So who is pretty much for sure going to Iowa?

Thanks
Dr Mac

Iowa City people got their letters today (not me, a girl in my lab) which means they were mailed yesterday.
Any OOS people hear yet?
For those of you getting the good news (I hope many of you) and planning on attending Iowa, Someone has already started this thread: University of Iowa 2011
i'm out of state - still waiting!! probably we will get the letters on saturday??
How far out of state?
Keep the news flowing. Last year none of the OOser's were accepted during the March 15th final pool decisions--all were waitlisted. Many got in off the waitlist though. It will be interesting if the same trend continues this year.
I'm #31 on OOS list.
