I think I've decided on the wrapsol ultra case.

That's similar to Zagg's invisible shield which is what I got for now.

I'll be going for the bumper. The risk of damage from dropping is going to be shattering the screen from the shock or denting the metal corners. I have never used any screen protector on the glass iPhone screen and it's never been scratched.

Even if you throw the iPhone 4 down concrete stairs, the impact is going to occur on the corners and sides. As long as the bumper is raised a few mm above the surfaces, the screen will not be impacted.

Still no stylus, which means no handwriting. Such a feature would be VERY handy in medical fields. HTC Tilt2 has a stylus, but runs Win Mobile 6.5 and seems to be plagued with bad reviews of freezing up. Dell Aero is a new android phone coming to AT&T, but I can't find when it comes out.
If iPhone 4 had stylus and handwriting support... I'd jump on it :) Until then, I'm still looking...

YOu can buy a stylus if you want. And some apps support handwriting and will convert it to text some won't you'll just have to google that

I wouldn't hold my breath for any new stylus-based mobile operating system. I can't think of any that are being developed.

You might find a device that comes with a stylus but if the 3rd party software that you want to use doesn't support its use then you just have another removable part to keep track of, switch out of, and lose.

The best you can hope for is a touch-based device while a 3rd party stylus for drawing or capturing signatures if you don't want to use your finger.

For all of you who want to know the changes in iOS4 here is a walkthough

wow, I am so stoked for this... especially since I WASHED MY FIRST GEN iphone a month ago and have been using this piece of **** ever since:

did you pre order your phone? if so when does it arrive?

Yup... I'm waiting for iBooks for the iPhone to be released, shouldn't be too long now

iBooks is out now... this is sweet. I wonder how it'll treat my PDF collection

how do you like iOS4?

Getting ready to bolt Verizon for the iPhone. Some questions for those of you who are familiar with iPhones:

planning to go w/the 2GB data package -- should be enough w/out using tons of data right?

2GB tethering package? doesn't seem worth the $

anyone use the Mobile Share option ($5/month)

Voice Dial at $5/month -- doesn't the iPhone have this as a standard feature?

is the Xpress mail option worth it? $5/month

AT&T Navigator? promo at $7/month usually $10/month (I have a GPS, but it does not include free updates)

16 vs. 32? I'm leaning toward 32 given that I want to use it for music and med apps, in addition to fun stuff.

any fav apps that are especially useful/fun?

1) I don't think I've ever gone over 2gb/mo

2) Never used the mobile share, don't know what it's for

3) iPhone has built in voice dial, don't need to pay AT&T for it

4) Don't know what xpress mail is, probabily don't need it

5) Don't get the AT&T navigator, I would go with TomTom it's on sale for 39 with no monthly fee has free updates AFAIK

6) Go for 32, you can never have too much storage

The features were almost kind of a letdown (I don't really use Pandora, no ability to merge folders, and I already discovered the upper limit of apps that can fit into a folder), but one thing that's new, and that I wasn't expecting, is just how gosh-darn snappy my phone is now. Delays are way down, probably partially because of multitasking, partially because of whatever voodoo tweaks they put in under the hood. It reminds me of when I installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook.

This is a thing Apple's been doing lately that I'm really becoming a huge fan of - instead of making each OS update bloat up with exponentially increasing lists of features and requirements, they've begun streamlining things and boosting performance for existing machines.

Oh, and Koko, I've never gone over 2gb, even when I jailbroke and tethered. Save the money. Also, like Slevin said, don't get all those features - the basic plan is enough.

However, I disagree RE: size. I found a 16gb to be more than sufficient, as long as you manage music well.

Just updated my 3GS. The multitasking, folders and overall performance is great. Took Apple long enough however.

Thats one of the main differences that Apple does that other companies don't. Apple doesn't like bloat nor do they like poorly planned products. If it can't be useful an done in a great way for the consumer then they won't do it. It took them until iPhone 3GS to get cut and paste right, could they have released it before probably, would it have been well done, probably not. Look at facetime, they could have added a front facing camera for a while now, did they? No because it wasn't ready for prime time but now that it is it makes video calls work well (according to the videos) unlike using the Evo where it takes a few days to get it set up just to make a video call.

Thanks Slevin and Tiktaalik. Appreciate the insight. Nice to be joining the 21st century :)

But on the bright side I might get the iPhone 4 for free. I'll keep you posted muwhahahaha

i'd be getting it nearly for free had I not washed my first gen iphone... they sell for ~150 on ebay. i'm still going to sell my water damaged one and try to squeeze 30-40 bucks out of it.

I've done this every year since I've gotten an iPhone and I haven't had to pay for one except my first one. I put it up on Ebay about 12 days before the new one comes out let peeps bid on it and usually I take in more cash than a new one costs because the iPhone is contract free. So I then wait till my new iPhone shows up and send out the old one (after I've restored it to factory condition and wiped all info from it)

Currently my iPhone 3GS is at 225 with 5 hours to go. Probably get 300 if not more for it

Edit:

Got 315 for it... Nice. New iPhone coming soon. As of yet I've not had to pay for a single iPhone minus taxes and the upgrade fee of 18 since I first got my iPhone in 2007

For those of you receiving yours today/tomorrow -- mini-review, please?

I'm using a Palm Pre right now, and I know that the Evo 4G is here on Sprint too, but I'm thinking about jumping to AT&T and snagging an iPhone. Kinda torn on the whole thing.

"Just as with its predecessors, I can't recommend this new iPhone for voice calling for people who experience poor AT&T reception, unless they are willing to carry a second phone on a network that works better for them."

And this is exactly why I didn't get the iPhone 4. Here's to hoping iPhone 5 will be on multiple carriers (with 4g service)!

I think one more revision and they will have all the minor niggling issues worked out. The two issues I want to see resolved: 1) More than 12 items to a folder/nested folders 2) The ability to have push-to-notification that runs in the background and doesn't seize the phone when a notification is received.

I really like to see a less regulated App Store, but I really don't see that ever happening (Of course, now that Apple is larger (in terms of total net worth) than Microsoft maybe we will get some of that tasty anti-trust action going on).

I don't know why there would be any anti-trust issues. RIM is still the #1 in terms of market share and 2) A monopoly is only bad when the company abuses it's market position. Since Apple doesn't have a monopoly nor is it using it's market share for abuse and the fact that Apple isn't the only game in town (there are alternatives to Apple such as the Android, Palm (how long that lasts), RIM, Nokia, Motorola, MS, et al) which means it is the users choice to pick an Apple product, this is unlike when you only had the regional bells and they were the only game in town so you had to go through them for phone service.

Besides if it's on the internet it's only a button push away from your consumption (make a home screen bookmark for those porn sites)

Well, no iPhone for me today. I didn't get the chance to get my order in for delivery by today but Apple said it would be shipped by 7/2. Well I then decided to reserve one up at my local Apple store and I was going to go and pick it up and once I got one in hand I would cancel my order online. Well, seems like Apple likes to jump the gun and they have prepared my iPhone for shipment which means that it'll leave China within the next 12 hours and get to me by monday. My problem is that I sold my old iPhone to cover the cost of the new iPhone and I need to ship out the old one to the guy who bought it. So no phone for me for the next few days... Bleh

Bad job by Apple and AT&T. Two days ago I spoke to an AT&T rep in a local store and was told not to worry about the fact that my preorder never got confirmed. He said to come in early today and there would be no problem. Go in today and was the fourth person in line and they tell me that they found out last night that they would not get any iPhones except for those preordered and confirmed w/receipt. Now they say that they may have phones next Tuesday, but they're not sure.

Very unimpressed. This is not the first phone Apple is rolling out with AT&T, right? Get your act together.

That's the AT&T store reps fault. Poorly trained staff.

On another note since I sold and finally shipped my iPhone 3GS to my buyer I have to wait until Tuesday to get the new iPhone. So I'm using a Nokia POS for now. So confusing to use a non-smartphone, I'm not even sure if I have the settings correct. Doesn't matter all I really need it for is to make calls for the time being.

sorry to hear that. there appear to be two problems people are experiencing with the iphone 4: a yellowish tint on the screen that apparently goes away after a few days use (it is due to incomplete drying of the material that binds the glass to the LCD screen) and an issue where when the phone is picked up it dramatically loses signal. fortunately I have neither of these problems and am enjoying the hell out of this phone. wait until you see the screen!

OH I can't wait.... I think I'm going to have FedEx hold it at their location so as soon as the place opens up I can pick my iPhone up rather than having to sit at home all day waiting for them to show up

I wonder where the lines were for all those Android phones people were desperate to get their hands on.

Ouch, why all the hate? Probably Fewer lines because there are so many phones to choose from. It's not like android phones aren't selling out too.

Just a casual observation that you haven't seen people lining up for hours or even days to get their hands on an Android device while you do for the iPhone. There is no hate involved, I just think that the Android platform is a me too device. Similar to the iPod and the Dell DJ, Dell saw the iPod doing well so they created the Dell DJ saying "we can do this too"

Although the funniest thing I heard was that there was a MS store opening across the hall from an Apple store yesterday in San Diego. Apparently they were giving out Concert tix and the such. Well most people who were in that line were only in it to get the tickets and nothing more.

yikes. im actually having the antenna issue as well in certain locations. i think it really is a design flaw and also id say this is why apple is manufacturing/pushing these bumpers; they apparently eliminate the problem. apple probably discovered this problem very late in the game. fortunately im not left handed and never hold the phone in a manner that covers the left antenna.

Actually, if you read the reports online it happens to all phones not just this one. Could use a small piece of tape to insulate it

For healthcare, iphone and android have the best platforms. All comes down to how good the applications are. See the top 5 healthcare aps and you could prob use them daily. With iphone4 you will get a better experience for epocrates etc

I saw this video on a local weather blog, it was shot with an iPhone 4. I'm very impressed with the clarity. BTW, nothing exciting happens in the video, it's just wind and sheets of rain.

Whoa. I like.

Palm's webOS is a pretty good alternative to Android if you don't want to put up with AT&T. I'll be honest, I'd have an iPhone in a New York minute if only AT&T's network didn't suck so bad where I live, or if it were available on Verizon. The number of native webOS apps is increasing, and you can run most Palm OS software using Classic. If you have a Mac, you can sync to your Mac apps using Missing Sync (over Wi-Fi, to boot). Plus, there's the Touchstone charger and Mobile Hotspot. I'm pretty pleased, overall. I can run those iPhone apps on my iPad, anyway. ;)

Oh and I can't wait till tomorrow, my new iPhone gets here. I sold my last one and have had to use a nokia 2610 for the past week. Suffice it to say it was not fun. Like going from a Porsche to a Pinto

Anyone having problems with the new iphone? I have a few friends on my facebook updating their status with their disappointment and problems with it. Besides the fact they are losing calls and picking up others phone convos because (according to Jobs) they are "holding it wrong", the proximity sensor is messing up as well and the guy sent a few messages with his face. Then a few others the phone wouldn't work with their MAC and he had to go buy a new program from apple so it would (not a big problem but still a crap way for Apple to get more $$$).

I mean this is just the beginning of complaints since it just came out. I was going to switch to AT&T for the i-phone but after seeing this I may just stick with Verizon and wait for the Droid X next month.
