Should I upgrade to an IPhone 5? Is it worth the upgrade? I am non tech kind of guy and dont do much except talk, text and occ google via wi-fi.

What about this new adapter called lightning? Does the iPhone 5 come with an adapter?

Maybe I'll wait a month or two before upgrading. Anyone care to comment about this new iPhone?

I think it depends. If you have an old iPhone or smartphone and its time for a new one then I would say yes. If you don't have a smartphone then upgrade for sure. If you have an iPhone 4S like I do, probably not worth upgrade. I've heard the iPhone 5 map sucks, but that's more of an iOS issue, it scratched easily because of aluminum construction, and people don't like the new adapter for some reason. If I didn't have the 4s I would upgrade.

Worth the upgrade? It depends what you're upgrading from. ... not worth the upgrade if you have an iphone 4S. A 4S comes equipped with a speedy a5 chip and an 8mp cam with Carl Zeiss optics which aren't too far behind the 5 in terms of quality. If you have a 4, then it may be worth the upgrade considering the increase in processing speed and camera quality.

No the new iphone does not come with an adapter. You need to buy an adapter on ebay or buy new accessories.

Having an iphone 4S and having tried my brother's iphone 5 myself, I don't see what the record sales for this phone were all about it. Yes, it;s the best iphone yet but there have been no game-changing additions this time around as were the retina display and camera on iphone 4; now those were game changing. Also yes, LTE aka 4G is fast but my brother reports that his battery is dying faster on the 5 compared to his 4S (due to the energy sucking LTE radio).

One more thing to keep in mind is that you can offset the cost of the upgrade ($200-300) by selling your old iphone. A used 4S in decent condition can net you $300-350 on eBay and more on craigslist.

I would wait a while and see how things go. The maps thing turned me off and like others mentioned, there wasn't that much new about it. I have an old 3G and was waiting for this upgrade, thinking I would get one. It fell flat enough that I ended up switching to an android phone, which is pretty slick. Thought about getting a 4S, but why get year old tech? Honestly, I was never that big of a fan of the iphone, but for a long time the app selection was much better. At this point its much more equal.

The Samsung galaxy s3 is pretty tight! I would have chosen that one over iPhone had it been available on Verizon at the time.

if you have the 4 and the contract is up i would say YES. the speed difference (both processing and network LTE) is night and day. i am surprised with all the posting and research you do that you haven't started to utilize a smartphone for much of that... esp since we are not folks tied up to a desk all day and security/privacy can be an issue on wifi/work computers. the map will improve with new updates, in the mean time you can STILL use google maps with the browser. as far as i'm concerned it is getting blown out of proportion. i am not a techie myself but i use the iphone for countless tasks during the day to keep me connected, organized, and entertained. everything from alarm clock, calender, reminders, micromedex, icd codes, pubmed, trading stocks, news, scores, banking/bill payments, weather, music, pictures, learning spanish (podcasts), cme's (audio digest), ordering food, copies/organization of receipts, creating pdf files, sdn... the list goes on. anything you can think of there is an app for that! i feel like i am only scratching the surface. i discover new things everyday. yes a 3gs or 4 works fine but you can do it MUCH faster on the 5. for most of us it's a business expense and deductible. android phones are a good alternative but the main difference in my mind is ease of use, build quality, and lower number of apps available. to me the apps make the phone not the hardware. my new dinning room chairs each cost more than an iphone. to me it's a trivial expense considering how much it improves my life.

Nope, not unless you want to be the beta tester for Apple's maps app. Lets see Siri is officially beta. Maps while not officially beta is so bad that they have added a new section in the app store with alternative map solutions. I am a huge fan of Apple products, but am beginning to wonder if the first signs of Steve Job's absence are starting to show with the maps fiasco. Something tells me he would have scrapped it at the last minute.

The only major useful upgrade IMHO is LTE. I would consider breaking my contract from my 4s for LTE because it is so much faster than any other internet that I can get out here in the sticks.

A minor upgrade, but important if you travel extensively internationally, is that Verizon's on contract iPhone 5 is unlocked from the get go. You can travel to another country, purchase a pre-paid sim, drop it in and go.

If I lived in your area and I needed a new phone now, I would look for a good deal on a iPhone 4s (I am too invested in Apple architecture to look at other OSs). If you don't need a new phone now, I would wait until next go around.

I say yes. I upgraded from the 4s on AT&T and switched to Verizon. So far their network has been much better. The 5 is much faster, it is also noticeably thinner and lighter. LTE is faster than my home fios connection which is insane. I'm loving it.

I use a Tablet for checking info. I use my current smart phone about once a day for internet stuff other than e -mail ( I use e-mail 6-8 times a day).

Is the build quality of the iphone 5 superior to the 4? Unlike many I don't order food online, do CME, etc. from a tiny smart phone. I prefer a computer or tablet for those tasks.

By the way I don't use GOOGLE MAPs; I have a MAP app for directions which is better than Google.

"Is the build quality of the iphone 5 superior to the 4?"

Typical Apple workmanship. Solid feel, no give. Glass and aluminum construction. I read the screen is suppose to stronger?? Thinner profile makes it feel more comfortable in hand (I wear size 7.5 surgical gloves). Main difference to me however is the WEIGHT. The 4 feels like a brick compared to the 5. I like to carry my phone in my scrub pocket and the 5 (even with protective case) is thinner and more manageable in that respect. Larger screen is a plus for the visually impaired but that is not it's strength (vs S3, HTC 1). Unlike you I use my phone for everything. I also have a Ipad but carrying that thing around the OR and hospital is not feasible for me.

Blade admits to not being a techie. That's the key word here.

I am a techie who has owned everything from Symbian OS, Windows Mobile and now Windows Phone 7, original Android G1 user to top of the line Galaxy nexus and Samsung Galaxy S3, and all versions of iPhones. Also blackberry user x 6 years.

In my opinion (that I give to non techies like blade). I find the most prefer the ease of use with iPhones compared to other phones these days.

Now to answer whether to upgrade to the iPhone 5. If you are an iPhone 4S user and most likely not eligible for a fully subsidy upgrade (the $199/299/399 pricing). Than I recommend u stick with the 4S. The 4S should last u another 12 months until the next iPhone. The camera in the iPhone 5 is not a major improvement to the 4S. It's "faster to load" but most of it is due to the newer faster processor.

The screen in the 4S is already excellent. Sure the iPhone 5 gives u a little more real estate up to 4 inches but its taller and the extra screen real estate is only helpful for widescreen use which most people like blade won't use often unless they are watching movies on a 4 inch screen.

So in closing if you have an iPhone 4 or older 3GS you should qualify for a full upgrade and should upgrade to the iPhone 5. The reasons are simple. Each day you waste by not upgrading you are basically giving att Verizon etc money cause you aren't using your upgrade and Verizon/att is not giving u a discount by being out of contract.

If you have a 4S, unless you are a phone junkie like me who goes through 4-5 phones a year. Than its not an essential upgrade.

The iPhone 5 is faster than any other phone currently on the market. LTE is nice (where available). But of us are around wifi during our working days and around wifi at home so LTE isnt essential for most of us doctors. I believe blade lives in Florida. Att is extremely strong in most parts of Florida compared to Verizon. (I have both att and Verizon service so know the strong and weak points of both networks).

Thanks. My Smart Phone is older than 4S so I can upgrade anytime. I'm thinking this Thanksgiving so the USB to Lightning cables are out in full force. I'll need at least 2-3 more for my car charges, home comupter, work charger etc.

How does the Iphone 5 compare to the Samsung Galaxy S3 (?? if that is the best Samsung model)? My understanding is that Samsung basically copied Apple in that design with improvements like a bigger screen, etc.

Being a simpleton (you all know I'm a simpleton right😉) I need easy to use Smart Phones so my guess is the Iphone 5 is perfect for simpletons.

Just remember Blade, right now at least, there's about a 3-4 week wait if you walk into Apple or an ATT store. Not sure about Verizon, and apparently Sprint is attainable if walking in. Even if you go on at 10pm and try to snag one for next day delivery, I hear it's hard (didn't work for me or friends for days). You want one in November? I'd order in about a week...

I've held it. Not in love with the feel, really toy-like. But it's faster and that's key with these toys in fact. I hear it's actually less durable. The maps thing is an issue, but it will be fixed sooner than later, has to be.

Yeah the lightning new port may become a big issue for those who have integrated Apple's old 30 pin ports into their lives (iphone and iPod) have used the same 30 Pins for the past 9 or so year.

Some people choose to wait until more adapters (cheaper) become available. Right now Apple has installed a chip into it's lightning cable that will forbid and cheap Chinese knockoff cables from working properly. Apple (and I know you own Apple stock..I also own stock). Well Apple charges a ridiculous $30 for an adapter. Something that maybe costs them $1 to make.

I have integrated iPhone/ipod adapters in the Audi that plays music. I haven't had a chance to get an adapter yet. But from what I've heard, you may lose some function even with the adapters.

As for comparing the Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5. Android vs Apple (iOS). It's like Windows vs Mac analogy. They are both excellent phones. If you prefer a big phone with a larger screen than the 4.8 inch S3 is an excellent choice. It's got cutting edge tech inside also. The USA version has a duo core (international version has a quad core). But the USA S3 has double the RAM (2GB) which more than makes up in performance.

But at this point I would not recommend an S3. Unless ATT/Verizon were willing to sell it to you for $99 (on contract), I would not pay the $199 price on contract (Walmart has it for $149).

This is the sneaky thing carriers like ATT and Verizon don't tell their customers. ATT/Verizon all purchase high end Android phones for around $450 (at most)...and often times $300 for lower end Android phones. They turn around the try to sell it to you for $199 so you will be on a 2 year contract. So at most ATT/Verizon is only subsidizing you $250 for the phone. That's why carriers try so hard to push non-iPhones on contract.

Apple maybe at most will discount carriers 10% in bulk. So carriers end up paying close to $600 for the iPhone. They sell it to you for $199 on contract. So carriers subsidized the iPhone close to $400 for each contract. That's how Apple makes so much money. The phone costs around $200 to make but they make a $400 profit on each iPhone sold. Whereas Samsung costs them around $200 also to make, but they sell to the carriers for $450. So Samsung's profit margin are much less (And Samsung is number 2 in profit margin with smartphones). Other manufactures profit margins are even less. Apple makes 2X as much profit as Samsung does on each smartphone.

Getting back to the S3. I wouldn't buy it right now. It's because the monster Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is coming in 4-5 weeks to the USA. Why pay $199 for the S3 when the Note 2 (probably will be $299 on contract vs $700 off contract). The Note 2 if you need a big phone will be the Android phone to get. It will be the first quad core LTE phone in the USA. It's got a huge 5.5 inch screen. The screen will be even nicer than the S3.

Saying all this, I firmly believe for you needs, the iphone 5 is the way to go. You want a phone that's simple to use and works. Android phones you gotta tinker with it a bit. Not sure you have the patience to do that.

As for why ATT/Verizon have 3-4 week shipping delays vs. Sprint having zero delays. It's fairly obvious. Verizon's iPhone 5 is sold "unlocked" for GSM/World use right out of the box. ATT's iPhone 5 is also "unlocked" if you purchase full price $650/750/$850. But ever since ATT announced they will unlocked iPhones after 2 years or if you pay to end your contract. There are many "insiders" who have access to ATT/Apple data base who will sell the unlocked code to you on ebay for $10.

Why does this matter? In terms of shipping delays, all the Chinese/South American/Indian black market resellers are buying up all the ATT/Verizon iPhone 5 and constraining stock of iphone 5's. And iPhone 5 16GB cost around $850 full price in many parts of the world. Some retail prices are over $900. Many of these black market resellers would rather pay $650 USA pricing plus taxes and smuggle them over seas and sell for a quick profit.

Wow! 5.5". Quad Core (whatever that means😉). Bad Ass phone for sure. With this phone Surfing the web becomes a real option.

Even though Samsung has ripped off Apple's patents they are kicking butt in the smart phone market and seem to be 1-2 years ahead of Apple in terms of technology.

Apple has the IO6 software advantage but I imagine in 2-3 years that software advantage willbe zero.

That new Sumsung Phone has WiFi Direct? Does this mean that a Tablet can connect to the phone and use that wireless connection to the intenet? This means I can own a tablet without paying the servive provider a fee for wireless because I'll access the internet through the smart phone wireless.

blade, you can already do this through the iphone... it's called data tethering, not exactly new technology. also, smartphone performance is more complicated than how many cores the processor has. according to this article by androidauthority.com: iphone 5 is just as fast if not FASTER than the galaxy s3.

Please explain how I "tether" my Tablet and phone. Let's assume I have a Apple Ipad 3 and Iphone 5. Do I download a third party app for this tethering?

Also, what other apps should I be looking for on my iphone 5? I have about 10-12 Apps so far on my phone and I bet many of you have over 100.

I have more Apps on my Ipad because I can read our journals, surf the web, print with the IOS6 software, etc.

If you're on the new verizon share plan, tethering is free. Go to settings>general>personal hotspot, set a password and turn it on, it then shows up to your iPad/computer in the available wifi network lists. In the future all you will need to do is go to settings and it will be right there.

If you're on the old verizon unlimited plan, it's $10 extra per month for tethering, same setup as above. If you're on AT&T, I don't know the price for tethering, but setup is the same.

Fwiw I turn my hotspot on my phone on when I need it and off when I'm on wifi, no need to run the risk of using tether data when I don't need to.

tethering is also known as 'personal hotspot' on the iphone... it is incredibly simple to use on the iphone and requires no additional app:

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/09/19/how-to-use-personal-hotspot-on-ios-6-and-the-iphone-5/

the apps i personally use most often are: usa today, bloomberg, PDF Reader, micromedex/epocrates, nejm, kindle, td ameritrade, zecco trading, tapatalk, youtube, turbo scan, slacker radio, ispending...

these apps reflect my interests and may not necessarily reflect yours. i suggest you check out itunes and browse the different categories that interest you (news, finance, medical, sports...). they are listed by popularity.

If you're due for an upgrade I would do it. To say the least it's really light, the taller screen is nice to have, the thinness feels and looks nice, it's a quicker phone, and it's tougher.

I have a 5 now, but I do still have my iPhone 4 with a can of soda resting on it, it's completely smashed both at the front and back, the screen literally (and I do mean literally) has zero visibility now because it's way smashed. Dropped it carelessly a ton of times and once slammed it to the ground on purpose out of anger and that's what finally did it, before I did that though I did have the thought in the back of my mind that the 5 was coming out in a matter of weeks, so I said why not.

Because of your 'dinged' screen and I'm assuming you meant slight crack you might be able to sell your 4 for around $100 less compared to what you would normally find for a used 4 currently in the market. That's just a guess with the presumption that screens can be repaired for around $70 from a third party which the buyer would most likely take into consideration before buying an iPhone 4 with such damage. Maybe the cost of repairs and parts will go down now because there's a new model? I don't know. A confirmation would be nice.

I just upgraded from a 4 to a 5 and am loving it. It's considerably faster in all regards but with similar battery life (i.e. all day use with 20-30% at the end of the day).

Battery life and reliability were the two most important qualities to me--after reading reviews on Samsung and Nokia devices, going to a new iPhone was my best bet. I'm glad I did.

Santa dropped off 2 new Iphone 5's down the chimney today. Really impressed so far (upgraded from a 4). Super fast...

Seems like the maps issue has been addressed.

Very satisfied.
