Hey guys, I was just wondering. Would taking 2 semesters of Judo be a decent extra curricular activity? This is a 1 day a week, 1 credit class.

Seeing that it could count as credits toward my graduation, would they look down on it, as compared to taking a Judo class at a local dojo? In all reality, I don't need these classes but am taking them cause I want to.

I know they like to see some involvement in sports or activities. So what do you think?

The only problem I see is that it is already on your transcript. Unless it is not written as judo on your transcript then IMO don't put it down.

Yeah, I thought about that too. I hope it can count as an EC. At least they might look at it and like to see it.

It is something that I plan on doing anyway.

if it was a class (part of the curriculum) how can that be considered extra-curricular? LOL 🙄

You are right, I did not really ask my question properly. I was just hoping that I could mention it aside from my transcript. As an activity or whatever.

But it looks like I will just have to join some intramural sports.

Definitely make it part of your app and your PS. Most D-Schools don't want animatronic study machines(thats the new and hip term for, "Book worms").

I put down my Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu experience. Not sure if it helped but it def didn't hurt.

I'm a belly dancer and since there's a lot of different views about it, I wonder what "some" adcoms my think? I really love my hobbie and all the shaking to relive stress! I took a 2 credit class and that was it, I'm hooked! So it's even in my transcript 🙂

i took karate as a 2-credit course for 1 semester and that's on my transcript. but could i put yellow-belt on my activities? i know it's corny but i wasn't even planning to take the test but ended up saying why not.....

Ha... so there are others who do BJJ. Did you have to quit jiu-jitsu when you got into dental school? That would honestly destroy the 3 years of training my a** off in the gym. I would probably just throw my purple belt in the trash...since surely my skills on the mat would diminish to that of a white belt in the children's class. But in serious, how is the Cesar Gracie Camp? I heard he's supposed to be a pretty sick instructor and trained the Diaz brothers (probably some other fighters as well). Also, don't mean to offend, but are there any other good grappling gyms in San Fran (since I assume that is where you live - training at Cesar's and all)?

Try Carly Gracie in SF... I train with his son in San Diego at Rodrigo Medeiros' gym. I definitely would keep training if i got into D-school but probably not as much as i do now. It will be a nice study break activity.

I did pretty much quit BJJ once I got into D-school but I had more going on than just DS. You could fit it in 2x's a week.

Also, you will never be back to a white belt level once you reach a certain level. I havn't trained in a while and still have the basics of the art and have applied them in a real world situation with very pleasing results.

Cesar's academy is just awesome. I trained with both Diaz brothers all the time. In fact, Nate Diaz and I ended up competing with each other in the finals of the Gracie Open a long time ago (I tapped him....that's my little 5 min of fame and I'm holding on to it!!) Of course that was a long time ago and he would absolutely annihilate me within 45 sec now. Nick can tap me out just by looking at me! Other total bad a#$es that came from there are Jake Shields (opened an academy in Berkeley), David Terrell (academy in Santa Rosa), and Gilbert Melendez. I've trained with all these guys and they are complete animals!

Good luck. Stick with BJJ if ya can but be careful and tell your opponent NO WRIST LOCKS!!!! hehe 🙂 You gonna need those hands!

Thanks ucsdpirate, I'll definitely have to check Carly Gracie's Gym out. Always nice to have options. Best of luck to you.

That's pretty sweet that you were able to tap out Nate, nobody can take that away...just ask Eddie Bravo about his match with Royler Gracie 🙂. Anyways, nice to hear you wouldn't need to completely stop training during d-school. Its always been a good stress reliever during undergrad. Best of luck to you.

What did you tap Nate with? That sounds like fun, I also do BJJ, but I just thought it would nice to learn a little bit of Judo.
