is biochem required?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey, what percentage of DO schools would you say require biochem??

They asked me why I didn't take it when I interviewed at Touro-NV.

I got accepted there anyway.

I think it helps but for sure it won't hurt you unless you are applying to those schools mentioned above.

whatd you say? im gonna be totally honest and tell them I had absolutely no interest in taking general biochemistry. i don't have any passion for learning it, and I know that anything necesssary to know i will learn in medical school. i reserved all course slots in my undergrad career for courses i knew that i was interested and would enjoy learning about. with all of the other pre reqs for med school, i was not interested in taking another one.

its kind of the same with anatomy and physiology. they aren't required for any schools (maybe reccommended), so why would you take it if you didn't have a strong passion for learning tha t material? you will get it all in med school anyway. i am a kines major so obviously i enjoyed those courses. thats why i took them. i can't say the same for biochemistry

that being said, there is a kines course called biochemistry of exercise and energy. that to me sounds way more interesting that general biochemistry and i will be taking it next spring. i'm going to try and get the schools that require biochesmitry to accept that instead of "general"

KCUMB definitley does. But I recieved an acceptance before taking it. So students shouldnt be discouraged from applying to KCUMB as long as they indicate that they plan on taking it on the AACOMAS app.

I felt the same about ochem, but not biochem et al. I've put a sizeable effort into taking classes that I'll see again in med school. The pre-clinical years scare the bejeezus out of me, as do the boards. So I've done biochem, lots of microbio, anatomy/histology/physiology, cell/mol bio, genetics, mol. virology and immunology. I wish I'd done some pharm and neuro.

That said, I'm probably 20 years older than you, and my transcripts are already full of classes like "Music of the 60's" and "Automotive Maintenance" and "Beginning Trampoline/Tumbling." I could have easily done a minor in "Beers of the World" as well.

I said since it wasn't listed as "required" at any of the schools I was applying at, and because I was a psych major, I chose to take other science classes such as anatomy, physiology, and genetics.

some schools will take another class in its place. Unecom wouldnt but i know kcumb told me my cell bio would be acceptable.
