Is the match process different than the med school process in that in state preferences are not given? In other words if you are a resident of a state on the east coast but want to match into Cali, is this going to be harder than matching in any other state?

Since there are a lot more residency slots than there are US grads in addition to the fact that I don't know of any state schools that impose residency quotas like they do for med school admissions, students have a lot more flexibility in leaving their home state for residency.

If you live in a state where people don't really want to live/practice, then it does add weight to your app to show a connection to a state. Cali? They're probably more likely to go with the best applicants that they can find. With that said, med schools in Cali produce some pretty high quality grads who may have a home court advantage at the schools that they attended.
