Hi All,

I'm a UK medical student planning to sit the USMLEs. But whenever I mention I'm interested in moving to california for residency everyone says I'm crazy, and it's not possible, because california has their own rules/is special/everyone wants to go there/not possible.

Is this true? How impossible is it to land a residency in california as a UK IMG??

What are the hurdles involved apart from good USMLE 1/2/3 scores?

Thanks a lot xx

I know of a UK graduate who did. He told me that it was very rare and that he considered himself very lucky.

Probably for the sun. UK is devoid of that. From some look at the residency programs at top IM programs in Cali namely: Stanford, UCSF, UCLA, UCSD, UC Davis and UC Irvine couldn't find a single IMG in the whole program (over the entire 3 years).... couldn't even find a DO.

So the short answer is no.

I agree....why the crap would you want to live in California?

Why wouldn't you want to live in CA?* Fantastic weather/scenery/landscape, cultural diversity, liberal politics**, educated/affluent/very nice neighborhoods (on the coasts anyway), high standard of living...which of course comes with high COST of living but oh well. It's definitely worth it imo. :xf:

*unless you love snow or just can't stand the taxation
**but judging from your avatar I don't think that would appeal to you lol

Na, rather live in a free state that actually honors the constitution and the morals that I believe are devine...but that's a discussion for a whole other thread.

So I missed typed one letter and the Wordead police caught me...grow up.

is that what they taught you? Sorry, but you're wrong. If you don't believe me, just go look up why the NRA was started.

The point is that if you don't want to perpetuate the stereotype of an uneducated racist, you might want to just glance over your 2 typed sentences, provided that doesn't take you an inordinate amount of time.

And what the NRA started as and what it is now is completely different. Just like the Republican party, which used to be the hippie-dippy liberals back when your precious NRA was started.

Inordinate amount of time? Let's compare step scores bud. 🙄

Seriously dude?!?! Who said anything about being racist? If you're referring to my avatar it has everything to do with his leadership and not his color. I disagree with the white-half of him just as much as the black-half. In fact, I hope that Dr. Ben Carson is our next president. It's funny that you assume I'm white too.

All of this is besides the point. The OP asked about California and I gave my thoughts. I respect your opinion but only ask you to respect mine.

Well that'd be hard considering you haven't taken Step 1 yet.

Lol step 1 dick size challenge. Strong arguments abound in this gem of a thread.

You were the one that said Confederacy + Racism is not what Texas is all about. Scroll up.

Also, I already took step 1, and although anything said online can safely be assumed to be a lie, I had a 262. Nor do I think step 1 has anything to do with intelligence - my score was simply a function of the massive amount of time I put into it.

And your "thoughts" on the topic were: why would you want to live in cali, texas is moral and constitutional and 'murica. Those don't qualify as thoughts in my book, sorry.

I'm still trying to figure out what Checcles could have scored on step 1, since he's been in the Step 1 forum in the last week begging for preperation materials (Phloston pots, etc.). Not exactly the behavior of someone post-Step 1 who rocked it enough to start pissing matches over their score. But I've been wrong before.

I live in California and while I love it I can guarantee you that by and large the constitution is not well respected. Also, no need to be rude just because you have differing political opinions --- opinions.

Why bring Prop 8 into it? Come visit and talk to the people. There are some very smart people and idiots alike who just don't respect the constitution. Some people just don't believe in it's principles. Other people just don't understand the depth of principles it was founded upon.

I think prop 8 is unconstitutional.

Really?? You have to be US citizen/green card holder? Surely that can't be true...

How did you look this up? I'd be very curious to see too.

That's so great to hear! Do you know if your US citizenship played any role?/if I can do it with EU citizenship?

Thanks for all the info guys!
Also, stop whining about tax. It's nothing compared to europe! 🙂

Yeah and Europe's in such great economic shape right now. Let's not worry about it until we get to the brink. Forget forethought.
