After deciding I wanted to be a PA or possibly a D.O. I decided to go back at age 37, I am in my 2nd yr, undergrad, BA Biology w/ C's in prerequisites and 1 F in Psych, which I am retaking this summer.

C's are as follows : Eng 1310
Sociology
Philosophy
4700 level History course
1050 Gov't

1 D in 1040 Poli Sci (Gov't)

1 B in Tecm (tech. writing) 2700

this = to a 1.77 but I haven't take any Math , 2nd history course or electives (visual arts) nor foreign language or science courses. I am taking 1 class this summer, being I am on acad. alert I can only afford 1 class out of pocket, if I make a 4.0 in that class is that enough to raise it to even a 2.0 so I can rec. aid for the fall?

I know it's not to late but I am in a better place in my life to where I am emotionally ready to make A's and B's from here on out and Will D.O. or PA program even look at the one's I have taken thus far?Or do they just care about the science and math section/s?

As far as calculating your GPA after your class, you can do that calculation yourself. It just depends on how many classes you have taken. You said you are in your second year, so I'm assuming you have more than what is listed. If you are truly trying to jump into this, please realize that A's and B's are not going to be good enough. You have a 1.77 GPA. You need A's period. Whatever it takes. You cannot falter. Realize that from this point on, every B is a step closer to NOT realizing your dream. If this is too much pressure, then please reconsider your choice.

When you say you cannot afford more than one class at a time, are you talking about at a state school or at a community college? I don't want to rehash this theme, but if you can't get financial aid, maybe you should consider doing a community college where the tuition is much less expensive. The graduate schools you apply to will look at EVERYTHING you have taken. If you are going DO, most allow for grade replacement so you can retake the classes you did poorly in, and instantly you have an A instead of an F. Not a bad deal at all, especially in your case.

Please take this journey seriously from here on out. It is a crazy hard long road. It's not for everyone. And it seems to get more difficult with each passing semester. I wish you good luck whether you choose to proceed or not.

I realize this goes completely against the typical way of doing things around here, but here's my suggestion:

Quit worrying about your GPA. What's done is done. From here on out, apply yourself, work hard, and be an academic rockstar. Let the chips fall where they may. The bad news, is that you can't do anything about what's come before. The good news, is that you're in complete control of what happens next.

Remember: you're smart enough, you're good enough, and doggone it--people like you! 😉

Great quote! I love the flashback SNL reference!!

I do take exception though to forgetting about GPA. It is too important to ever forget about. I say this because if he/she is not capable of being a rockstar, then it is better to give the bad news now rather than later. Use the poor GPA as motivation to do better than everyone else. Always.

Has it been a while since you were in school or have you been slowly pooling the poor grades together? I think that makes all the difference, really. If you've had a revelation that THIS IS what you want to do and can truly buckle down and give it your all, then go for it. My GPA was a 2.4 after my 1st year. I finally got a wild hair and got back into school online a year ago and brought my GPA up to a 3.5. I'm back in traditional school having decided to head into the medical field and I plan on hitting it with everything I have, and I suggest you do the same. Go in with the mindset that Bs are NOT OK, but don't kill yourself if it happens. Retake what you need to, bust your butt on the MCAT and go for gold. Good luck : )

Thank's all... I am in my 2nd year, sophomore,I started last summer going thru a break-up from a rel. 12 years, was emotionally abused by my ex , and dealt w/ a death of someone I loved very much and yes I am a male and it happens. I am stronger now, more determined than I have ever been.

I am attending a university here in north texas. After this summer w/ 1 course I made a F in,my cgpa will be up to a 2.0 and I won't settle for any less than an A from here on out. I plan on taking 3 courses in the fall cause I'll be off of academic probation and wil lrec. financial aid again.

How will be placed on acad. probation affect my chances 4 yrs down the road if I come out w/ say a non-science 3.0 and say science and math over all of a 3.5,no science taken yet, using that as a estimate?

If you were not doing well in the past, try to find out what is causing you to do poorly. Working too much, have other personal problems, not maintaining healthy life style (this becomes more of an issue as we get older), or did not have good study habits in the first place?...etc.

Also, be realistic about your goal. Start slow but finish strong. Best of luck to you.

I'm truly sorry to hear about you personal situation. I hope you are able to use that as motivation to work even harder. Where in North Texas are you taking your classes? That's where I am as well. If I were you, considering you have not yet taken any science classes, I'd be shooting for a lot higher sGPA than 3.5. That's not high enough. You need to excel. You need to be better than those around you. Medical schools are not looking for mediocre talent. They are looking for the best and brightest. With a 3.0 cGPA, and a 3.5 sGPA, you will be at a severe disadvantage when it comes time to apply. Also, I believe TCOM in Ft. Worth is one of the only DO schools that does not do grade replacement. Just something to keep in mind. Best of luck to you.

TY, what it boils down to is I am only half way thru my pre requisite / Core classes for the univ., which is UNT here in Denton, I still have aprox 7 or 8 more pre reqs to go , non-science...

I have decided that perhaps the PA program would be more my pace, less time and I would enjoy being a PA.

Good deal. UNT is a good school. Keep in mind that PA programs are also highly competitive. I don't know as much about them, but I do know they are not slam dunks to get into either. One of my friends is actually starting PA school at UTSW next week. Just bust your butt at whatever route you choose. Also, I have been to Denton many times as I live in The Colony currently. :luck:

From personal experience I had an F my freshman year and was also placed on academic probation, I recovered worked hard and I was accepted into PA school so don't worry you can do it.

Yeah, I didn't think it was the end of the world but I just needed to hear it from someone w/ the experience . I think I will take Psych 2 , we only need 1 psych course per the PA route and only 3 cr hrs for that elective but I may take psych 2 and bust my ass w/ a A to show my determination, being I have 2 retake Psych 1 and made a F and no it will not come off.

You are 37 and scoring worse than a 16 year old taking AP classes. Before ever thinking about PA or DO, you need to find a way to get the minimum 2.0 to get a bachelors.

Well, how well would you have performed during the semester dealing w/ a death of your soulmate?I'm glad you'd be excellent and make a 4.0, so thanks.

I didn't see that part in your original post. I suggest next time you drop instead of allowing your GPA to fall.
