Is it possible to get into TX med schools as an OOS student?

Hello,
I was wondering how difficult it is to get into a TX school as an OOS student? I do know that they are required to take 90% IS but that still leaves room for some OOS students to get accepted. Would you say you have to be a top tier applicant to get into TX schools as an OOS student?

Good candidates from CA have been accepted to the TX schools.
The more remote or newer schools may be better bets for the good applicant.

Thanks for the input. Would you happen to know if they would be less likely to interview someone if an applicant applies broadly aka a lot of schools? I know for TX schools you have to report all the schools you are applying to (not sure if this includes DO schools as well).

But don't you just have to report what other Texas schools you are applying to, since they have their own app/process? Could be wrong

There is a question on TMDSAS that specifically asks you to list all the non-TMDSAS schools you plan on applying to. Of course, plans can change . . .

I thought it was reporting every MD (and probably DO too) school you applied to. I could be wrong. Is it just reporting what schools you applied that also use TMDSAS?

I applied broadly (and reported it honestly on TMDSAS) as an OOS student and found success in Texas. Anecdotal evidence isn't really a compelling reason to submit TMDSAS (IMO), but a risk-reward analysis may show it is worthwhile.

Unless you wanted to "be" in Texas (for med school, residency, etc) I would think it would be very hard. I mean, the stats are already pretty rough to get in as an in-state student. Take UTSW for example. Avg GPA 3.85, avg MCAT 34, and they still only accept 10% of applicants. If you really wanted to "be" in Texas, I think you would want to establish residency first. You'd save 80K in tuition anyway and have a much better chance at getting in.

While they only take a small portion of their class as OOS, realize that a vast majority of students from out of state won't go through the trouble of filling out TMDSAS. So you only get a couple hundred out of state applicants at each school I think. As an OOS student I got 5 interview offers of the 8 Texas schools I applied to, but I have yet to hear back from the 3 I attended. So this isn't the best evidence haha.

I am an OOS student currently in my second year at a Texas school. I will say I've found that the majority of us OOS have exceptional EC's or at least a graduate degree. I am in no way saying it is required, but it is common to our little group. Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

I think having something "exceptional" will be the norm for those few OOS applicants accepted. For many, that will be super-high numbers; for others, unusual ECs or an exceptional mission fit. I don't expect "OMG I LOVE Texas!" declarations would matter much. I have to imagine TX AdComs will be looking to 'fill holes' in a class profile, raise averages, or otherwise add something that is currently missing.

This is an n=1, but I have a good friend (CA resident) who applied to all the TX schools in addition to ~10 AMCAS schools. ~31 MCAT, good GPA, good EC's. She has had 4 TX interviews (3 "low" tier, 1 mid/upper), 2 acceptances, but no interest from any of the AMCAS schools.

Honestly, we were both surprised when she started getting all of the TX interviews because of the 90/10 rule. I'd always heard that you must have high stats for TX schools as an OOS applicant. I think one thing that made a difference is that she went to undergrad in TX and is spending her gap year there too.
