If I apply by 12/1~12/10, is it too late for consideration for 2010 dental admission?
I know people apply in July/August, but something came up in my life and I just decided to go to dental school and was wondering if I should wait another year to apply or give it a shot this year.
Anyone who has any experience or know someone who applied in December and was offered admission, please let me know!!~
Thanks

I would suggest waiting to apply.

This sounds like a spur of the moment decision, and it might reflect poorly to the admissions committees.

Unless your GPA is amazing, DAT is out of this world, and your extra credentials are a meaningful laundry list, then I would wait.

Short answer...yes.

Best bet is to prepare for next cycle and apply in late may, 2010....unless $$/time is no object, then what the heck..go for it but don't hold ur breath.

I actually do know quite a few people who applied pretty late (Nov-Dec) and still got into their top (or semi-top) choices (NYU, Stony, Columbia). However, the reality is that some schools are automatically out for you at this point- for example, Case already has interviews lined up until April/May. Even schools that aren't completely out will still choose the vast majority of their students from early applicants.

If you really want to apply now, I say do your research and choose schools that extend interview offers way post December.

wow, seriously?! how did you find this out?
should i even bother submitting the supplemental fee now?

Case is crazy... I got a interview invite mail in late august and turns out it was for Feb..... Unless this is your top choice, I would save that money.

I would say wait until next year. People who have already submitted apps have been getting emails telling them when the deadlines for certain schools have past, and that is for around six schools by now.

I know it sucks to hear advice to wait. I was given that advice last year and I am happy I listened. I put applying off for one cycle and have had 7 interviews with 4 more after dec 1.

So just wait, kill the app next year. You will save yourself time, money, and aggravation!!!🙂🙂🙂

Hey those are my stats

I just turned in my apps today. I am getting my masters in public health. my first semester i got two C+ cause of personal reasons. But since then i got As and Bs.

last time i applied i had 2 interviews, once at UW and one at UF. I applying to 5 schools, UF, Nova, Midwestern, NYU, BU. I really want to be a dentist but sometimes life makes looking good difficult. I know personal life sometimes makes study hard but I was able to do amazing research and publish a first author paper. I am in the process of getting another peer-reviewed publication. I also have alot of extracurricular and dental experience.

I am extremely interested in communtiy health dentistry and about to go on a 3 month dental internship.

I can only afford so many schools so I chose mine carefully.

BU and NYU have big community outreach programs and all of them have extensive research opportunities.

DAT:

Overall 19
Total Sci 21
General Bio 20
Chem 19
PAT 18
Quant. 15
Organic 23
Reading 19

edit: oh ya..i just esubmitted and im waiting on my LORs (they are on their way), and confirm GPA (transcripts sent last week).

I wrote a really good personal statement that really emphasizes why dentistry.

why did you guys wait so long to apply?? do you realize that a huge portion of many schools acceptances are given out on Dec 1?

Best of luck to you guys, but i think it was a costly mistake to apply so late :/ ...but then again, we are not adcoms so ya never know!

People are fed this myth that every school is 90% full by this point. Almost all of the schools out there including the big private schools, NYU, TUFTS, BU, etc will be less than 50% full by December. Considering the application cycle is half over by then, a good rule of thumb is just to assume the classes fill proportionally to how long into the application cycle we are at. I submitted my app last year in late november (wasn't complete until mid Dec) with a 3.0gpa and 24AA and got more interviews than i could afford to attend.

So true. I didn't submit until August, and SDN had me convinced that I had effectively shot myself in the foot by applying so "late". Then I talked to other dentists/dental students who ALL commented on how early I got everything together and how they didn't submit their applications until Oct/Nov/Dec.

Exactly why I said SOME schools, some schools do admit enough applicants to fill their class on dec 1, and will do few to no more interviews following.

Long story short i put money enough aside to be able to afford everything. A year ago they found a growth in my fathers soft palate. Everything will be fine but some soul searching led to me realizing more then ever that i wanted to be a dentist. Why should i wait to apply to carpet bomb 15 schools when i can afford 5. I picked 5 schools based on my location, their outreach and research programs, and knowledge of other students who have been accepted from my school in the past. NYU has accepted a few student from UF before with MPHs. They also do alot of outreach and research. Living in the city would be cool but whatevs. I have family in Manhattan it would be great to be around them. NYU is expensive and theres some pretty sick rumors about dropping their lowest 15%. But I think I would do well in such a competitive atmosphere. I know once i am in dental school the information i will be learning is directly related to what ive been wanting to do for almost a decade.

Well I am rambling. Its a 1/3rd of the way through November, I would love to get some interviews in december. I expect my transcripts should already be ariving at AADSAS this week. They already calculated everyones GPAs. They shouldnt take to long to do mine, and 2 people still have to turn in LORs. I got two from Graduate level professors. I also have one from the dentist i shadowed in high school. My only experience in college was 2 dental conventions. I have only asked to go to the sim lab and shadowed for a total of like 4 hours here at UF over the course of a year and a half. Ill be doing some intense dental internships over the next 4 months before i graduate so i hope that will supplement.

Last time I interviewed at UF i had trouble answering a question which I have a pretty good grasp on now. Hopefully I will get a few more interviews this time around and a spot with all of you.

Why is everyone freaking out about this quote. StirrinIt didn't say the schools are filled up, just that they hand out a lot of acceptances, which is definitely true. But due to deference and seat holding, only about 50% of each class is filled. It's just advantageous to apply early because you will hear back earlier and get pre-December interviews. But plenty of pre-december interviewees get waitlisted and eventaully evaluated with post-december interviewees.

I would apply. Nothing can replace the year that you MIGHT not end up waiting..an entire year. Any chance of getting in...even if it's small is completely worth it! Even if it's hard on your bank account. Then just be a little more picky with what schools you think you have the BEST shot at or take out a loan (like I did).

No one's freaking out. We're just saying that the SDN myth of apply early "or else" is not all that it's cracked up to be.
