is it too late to take the DAT on Nov 10th? Please help...

I will be done filling out the application by july end, but am finishing up summer school till sept 6th.. Is it too late to take the DAT in Nov? I should be prepared to give it then....
I will be limited to applying to only a few schools.......
But what do u guys think??? Can i still be admitted for fall 09???

Please help......

There is always a chance. But, remember it takes several weeks for the ADA to get your official DAT scores to the schools so it could be after December 1st before some schools even look at your application. By then, acceptance letters have already started to be mailed out and with rolling admissions there will be considerably less seats left available.

In my personal experience, I waited until November to take my DAT the first year I applied. I didn't get any interview invites. The next year, I completed my application and DAT by the end of July. I had several interviews and was accepted to two schools and waitlisted at two more. (Pretty high acceptance/waitlist considering I only completed applications to eight.) Others on Student Doctor have had a similar experiences where they had no luck when finishing their application late. Also, keep in mind you have to wait 90 days if you have to re-take the DAT. This means you're pretty much out of luck for the 2009 class if you don't stick it the first time.

All that said, you probably should call the schools you are interested in and see if they will even consider your application without the DAT so you can make a better informed decision. I know most DS sites say they won't consider your application complete until they receive everything including official DAT scores but there was an individual that interviewed same day as me at one school who had yet to take the DAT.

I don't know how many classes/hours you are currently taking but you might consider trying to study for the DAT a few hours a day while in classes so you can take the DAT earlier. To me, it'd be worth the extra effort. Good luck.

i'm gonna say you're probably not going to have high chance unless your stats is really solid that schools want you so much (i would say somewhere around 3.75+ GPA and 23~24+ DAT scores)

i think we need to know your stats to give you a more accurate advise.

just to give you an example, my friend who had 3.8 GPA with avg. DAT score of 18 applied in October and got one interview and waitlisted.
(she submitted in late-September)

I know it also depends on other things like GPAs, but..

If you take it late, you will have to do reallyyy well.
If you take it earlier, you may just need OK scores.

It's good that you are confident, but you never know.

Well if u have an upward trend I heard here is a strong point in ur favor. Im taking the DAT in mid Aug. and I believe is late in my case. I called most schools (im applying to 13) and they all told me they will take the application but they NEED DAT SCORES. Just keep that in mind DAT is a must. GL 👍

It sound like no matter what people say you want to apply so go ahead and do it. You know what your stats are better than anyone else. It just isn't that common for someone with a 3.1 GPA and a DAT taken in November or even October to get in, the odds are against you. If for some reason you think you should then do it, but probably just save your money and get ready for next cycle if there is no way you could take it before Oct or Nov.

if you're willing to waste (or invest if you do get in) money to apply this year, then by all means go ahead and try to apply this year even if you're taking your DAT on Oct 15th.

but most people here do agree that applying to dental schools will cost a lot and if you're taking your DAT on Oct 15th., your scores will be sent around early November and schools will probably process your application after Dec 1st (since that time will be peak with interviewing and figuring out who to accept for 1st batch) you are not going to be considered for admission until post-Dec 1st and you have to be a very strong applicant to win those left-over seats

it's upto you but if you're going to apply either way, make sure to have your application sent into school this month, so at least all they have to wait is your DAT score (it takes about month to month and a half to have your application ready to be reviewed, about month for them to verify + send printouts and such as processing fee + secondary app.)

Although, I am going to call schools on monday and see how it goes..Uni of Detroit,Mercy replied saying 'it is not too late to apply and you can always send in your DAT scores later. Make sure u fill the app. asap '..This email encouraged me, and i am back 2 reading and giving in my 100% !

Of course they are going to say it is not too late to apply. The deadline has not passed, and they want your application fee. Yes you can send your DAT in later, but no school will even consider your app until they have your DAT scores, which will take about 3 weeks to get there after you take the DAT. If you take the DAT when you are planning. Schools aren't even going to look at your app until their class is over half full. With your gpa, that isn't a good scenario (it's really not a good scenario for anybody). I'd take to heart the advice offered above. Either take the DAT much earlier than you are planning on, or save your money and apply next year.

IMO, you're asking the wrong question. As the previous poster said, they won't tell you it's too late if their deadline hasn't yet passed. But, if they won't look at your application until you submit DAT scores, you're not in a very good position. I'd ask if they will even look at your app if you haven't submitted DAT scores. If they will, then apply. If not, you're quite possibly wasting time and money.

The Kaplan course is like $1200. You'd better get a 23+ or you're gonna cry because of all the money you just spent.

my school needs me to attend a workshop before i could get the LORs ..the earliest workshop available is on aug 7th :-/

i don't know if you're taking an important class that you need for the dat this summer but even if that's the case, you don't need to have taken the class to do well on the dat. just use prep books instead of texbooks or taking a class, they are much more efficient. i don't know how important this summer courses are to you but i think the dat and making sure you get in this cycle and saving a year should be your highest priority...

Submit now and send in your transcript right away. Then, when you get your LORs bypass AADSAS and send them straight to the schools you are applying to, most should be OK with that.
