Hey all,

my friend is currently taking organic chemistry II is facing this "unfair grading curve" that the professor gave.

I am not sure if it is unfair or not but it is the first time that I heard that the range for a C is 72~40% while a B is 73%-82%.

So... a student has a 40% get the same grade as a student who has a 72%? Isn't the range for a C a bit too wide?

I guess my question would be "What the hell does any of that have to do with him doing his job? Namely, getting an A."

this is merely my opinion but I think the prof is being generous.
Since lots of students struggle with orgo and many tend to change major after doing terribly in that class, maybe the prof doesnt want the students to fail and get discouraged. So my guess is that the range for A , B are unchanged but he has extended the range for C to decrease the number of students that will be failing.

My friend is upset because his grade is like a low B for now so he was very concerned when the cutoff for a C is like 40% and 73% for B.

dude are you kidding me. this is completely unfair. Why is his professor so generous?

Thats a pretty generous curve. For my ochem class we had a standard grading scale and every little point counted.

Lucky friend. This isn't unheard of though. The phyiscal chemistry class at my school is so ridiculous that the B-range is 50% - 80%

Welcome to life. In which everything is unfair.

just be glad you weren't in an orgo lab that ranked each classmate and only gave A's to the top 10 regardless of your grade percentage...yes this class and the opposite (grade deflation) of what you're experiencing exists...

This is more than fair. If the student was so upset about the curve maybe he should tried harder.

Why would your friend say it is unfair grading? Unless your friend is a gunner who worries about his/her future competitions and want them to fail early in the game, there no such thing as unfair grades. People are still able to fail, get C, B, or A. Your professor just extended the grading scales.
