I was recently accepted to medical school and my girlfriend is already beginning to get worried. She is a huge Grey's Anatomy fan and is worried that everyone in med school is always sleeping together like in the show. How close to real life is that show?

That's funny--that was actually one of my interview questions!

i hope it is... i'll take me some addison shepard anytime 😀

Never seen the show, but when you've got 100+ people together, many who are young and single, in close quarters contact for for many hours each week, things happen.

Medical school is like high school in more ways than one.

Excellent Paul Farmer quote btw. 👍

How close to real life is that show?

The killjoy answer is that it probably isn't close at all.

First of all, there's rarely time enough to sleep as a resident, let alone sleep with others all the time.

Second, since when did residents have reasonable hours? Don't they take call any more?

Third, it would seem that Seattle Grace never has any new surgical residents. Yeah.

I don't remember the exact quote, but there is an exchange between two characters on the show where a resident explains to the confused neurosurgeon that essentially, interns are socially inept robots because they've forgotten how to be human. Perhaps this is also applicable to med students? I don't know, though, I'm only beginning the application process now.

As far as everyone hooking up with everyone else? Yeah, med school's kind of like that. But that's the only part of the show that's accurate. 😛

Tell your gf to calm down. I don't think the crap they show on Grey's is any close to the real thing in hospitals. For instance, for 2 years now, I've worked in several units of the hospital where I'm currently employed and I've never walked in on or heard of any interns/residents/nurses caught committing any indecent acts.

I don't know about med school being like Grey's Anatomy... but some part of me really hopes that practicing medicine in a hospital environment is a lot like what they show on "Scrubs."

Med school will make or break your relationship, no question. But most people in my class survived the test, and the vast majority are either married or in the same LTR. The only ones who are still single are the straight-up nutjobs like me.

By the way, is anyone else glad that the whole Burke-Christina thing is finally over? Gah.

First off...you're asking in a pre-med forum about what med school sex life is like.
Second off, Grey's Anatomy is about surgical interns/residents, so it's not even about medical school.

And finally, yes, your girlfriend is right, medical school is a nonstop sexual fantasy romp where they have orgies in the anatomy lab. 😱

Seriously though, while I'm sure people will have sex it's probably just because we're a bunch of twenty-somethings more than anything else.

Third, it would seem that Seattle Grace never has any new surgical residents.

Actually it looked like they got some in the last minute of the finale.

Med school isn't like Grey's, which is about residents, not students, and doesn't even come close on that mark. OP - It's not usually infidelity that breaks up couples in med school -- it's the hours. Make sure your girlfriend has her own friends/job/school etc to keep her busy because your days of having ample time to entertain her and attend everything she wants to go to will be over. I'd be more worried that she'd stray while you are stuck on call at the hospital on rotations than the converse. (If that makes you/her feel any better).

I recently got accepted to the space program and my girlfriend is worried that people are always shooting lasers at you like in Star Wars. How close to real life is that movie?

Oh come on, I think we all know it's more like Armageddon. I think you'll just have to occasionally go on suicide runs to asteroids is all.

Perfect! 👍

Legally Blonde would be it. Most students who got to Harvard for law school did actually submit a video essay of themselves in pink bikinis (boys AND girls alike!) 🙂

it's been a while since I laughed out loud reading this forum... 👍

shoot... your gf should probably be happy. i would bet that med students have less sex than other people their age.

I spent more time laughing at that ridiculous My Humps video in that guy's sig. The Star Wars comment was funny though.

I HIGHLY doubt its like greys reason being that the level of attractiveness for pre-meds is FAR lower than the level of attractiveness on that show. I went on like 10 interviews and saw maybe 1 cute girl. and she was wearing tons of makeup. so my question for you, "how high are ur standards?" b/c at my undergrad I was hardly ever attracted to my lab partner. so yah... i know that some of the people on that show are like super model hot. i think u should be okay. unless u'd hump anything that walks.

I second that. I hope I have an attending like Dr. Cox. 🙂

That's probably not so "killjoy."

The killjoy answer is "SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP! I pray that med students aren't obsessed with TV medical dramas and comedies and thinking/hoping that's what med school is going to be like."

But that would be out-of-character for me, given that I'm usually a fairly nice, grounded SDN-user. 🙂

Hahaha the third doctor I shadowed asked if I ever watch medical shows, and when I said yes but I realize they're not realistic he laughed and thanked God. Then he told me under no circumstance am I to ever, ever bring up medical shows, and if an interviewer or someone else brings it up, I can admit I watch them but need to explain clearly that I know the difference and in no way believe they're real or hope that med school/medicine is like that. Haha.

tell her to read house of god, it will make her feel better

I've heard that med school school is similar to grey's, but with more scanning for lesions

YES! I'm glad I'm not the only one! My friends find it wierd, but I think she's the hottest person on that show. Maybe it is a power complex or something. The roommates feel the need to continuously tell me she played a man on CSI a while back. I say, oh well. Haha.

Think about this...it took them three years for them to finish their internship year! Yikes!

Yeah, we both read that book and that only made it worse. But I told her nobody would read that book if it was about sunshine and rainbows and bunnies.

Tell your girlfriend not to worry. It will be years before you become an MD, start making the big money and dump her for someone way hotter.

I'd like to read a book on sunshine, rainbows, and bunnies. It'd be a nice change of pace.

Sound advice if I ever heard it!
I think interviewers should automatically blacklist people who bring up medical shows in their interviews, except when in jest.

I mean, it's really ok to be a fan of these shows (not like anyone needed approval, anyway) but I surely hope it doesn't influence anyone's decision to enter medical school.

I've worked in several units of the hospital where I'm currently employed and I've never walked in on or heard of any interns/residents/nurses caught committing any indecent acts.

I've known of several people fired for that.
But they're usually ancillary staff. 😉

As a follow up question:

How easy at medical schools with a university to bag undergrads as a med student?

Probably depends on the school. I've met a good number of females - even in my pre-med classes - who are going to school to get their "MRS." I am not joking. There are girls who just go to school to get married. I can't believe they pay tuition, sometimes out of state, just to find a man. So yeah, if you're a male med student, you should not have a problem at some schools.

I didn't read all the responses, but this is one of the big reasons why I hate these shows - the unknowing public doesn't distinguish between fiction and reality.

I'm pretty sure the script writers are completely concerned with accuracy. It's their job to write as accurate an account as possible without tainting the script with things like fictional drama. Once you get into medical school you'll find that the person you slept with the night before is really a resident. Then the rest of your residency will be about when and how to screw her again. Meanwhile all the new friends you've made while a resident will be concerned with screwings of their own.

kinda optimistic, no? actually i'm sorry to say exactly 33.75% of you will go to bars and sleep with someone who says he's a resident but it will turn out that he meant resident of whatever state you are in and that he just wears scrubs to bars because he doesn't have to worry much when he spills beer all over them or spews himself and its a girl magnet...that or he's on night duty cleaning the bathroom and its his uniform. then, you'll get knocked up--because this ain't television, there are consequences--and you'll be elated b/c now you can marry that man who literally swept you off your feet and file for in-state residency using the address of his **** apartment and you won't be bleeding out of your eyes from your outrageous med loans.

It always kills me when people ask me if medicine is anything like it is on TV...

She really doesnt need to worry...your gf will soon enough see that you and your classmates will be studying way too much for any twisted love polygons.

Most people in my class are keeping only to their spouses, fiancees, or very serious partners. Sorry singles!

shoot... your gf should probably be happy. i would bet that med students have less sex than other people their age.

I'm not so sure about that. Most people our age are working in jobs where they don't come into close contact with a bunch of people of the opposite gender in the same age group constantly. And really, if you're studying all the time, hooking up with a classmate is just about the most time-efficient way of de-stressing I can think of. 😛

Obviously this will vary by school and class, but I know of a lot of people in my class that're hooking up with one another.

as someone who is in the working world now, i beg to differ 😉 teachers at my school are incestuous PLUS they have lots more free time. and lots of them are hot. just sayin.

tv is stupid. no job is like tv. i like tv. dammit.
