Is medicine the second oldest profession in the world?

Hunting and gathering are not professions, any more than me buying food at the grocery story is a profession.

Actually, I have read some papers which suggest there were distinct "hunter classes" and "gathering classes" among neanderthal and early human populations. This would be the definition of a profession, that is, a job assigned to/chosen by an individual.

You are forgetting about our ape ancestors and their jobs. First profession in this world was definitely poo thrower.

I read somewhere that the oldest profession was shoe maker/salesman. What else did the prostitutes have to spend their money on.

If medicine is the second oldest profession, then I'm guessing pharmaceutical representative would be the third oldest profession... or is pharma rep actually the oldest profession?
