According to AMCAS, you need to have 8 credits of Organic Chemistry. Orgo I lecture is 3 credits and Orgo II lecture is 3 credits. Orgo lab I is 2 credits. So is Orgo lab II necessary?

Thanks!

8 credits is 8 credits. No need to do more labs if you don't have to. 😀

AMCAS does not determine the # of hours or credits you need - it is the individual med schools. Where did you read this on AMCAS?

Be VERY careful if assuming that 8 hours is the magic minimum number of hours for any of the pre-req sequences.

Go look at the websites for some of the med schools you are interested in and read their reqs - the ones I have read say for each of the 4 sciences "one year, with lab" and say NOTHING about the hours...

Really? Because I have friends at schools where lab and lecture is combined and they have 4 credits lab and lecture and 4 credits lab and lecture, so they have to do both...

Maybe it wasn't AMCAS and I was mistaken but I read 8 credits somewhere. (I think my university premed page?)

my school does course units.. so orgo with lab is the same weight as african dance

that's what mine was the first time; now I'm retaking orgo 1 and then taking orgo 2 and they are 5 credits each. Wow what a lot of orgo hours I'll have, and this is not a good thing. 🙁

The breakdown must be at least 6 hours in lecture and 2 hours from labs. I don't know how they'd really determine what was supposed to be in the lab that you took, but that's what they tell us.

Since there is no guarantee that you will get into the one medical school you desire to goto when you are a sophmore, I'd suggest you just take all the required courses that are common among many medical schools so you don't screw yourself when you apply to 15 schools and get into that one school that requires something you don't have...

Required Courses
  • Biology I w/Lab
  • Biology II w/Lab
  • Physics I w/Lab
  • Physics II w/Lab
  • Organic Chemistry I w/Lab
  • Organic Chemistry II w/Lab
  • Inorganic/General Chemistry I w/Lab
  • Inorganic/General Chemistry II w/Lab
  • Biochemistry I (take this Fall or Spring of Senior Year)
  • English Courses

Helpful Classes for MCAT
  • Genetics
  • Physiology
  • Microbiology

You may find a handful of schools require psychology or molecular biology coursework as well, though that is rare.

my school is on quarters so we do 3 quarters instead of 2 semesters.

we don't have a ochem I lab. we only have 2 labs offered, which is in ochem II and ochem II. so i don't really have a choice - i cannot take a lab for a full year.

however, seeing as how i go to OSU and tons of people graduate from there and go onto med school you'd think it would be okay.

You might wanna check with one of your professors or a pre-health advisor or something. We only have Orgo II Lab as well, however, we are supposed to get our other orgo credit by taking the lab for Analytical Methods (analysis of organic and biological compounds). This is my school's way of forcing everyone to take analytic since that's the only way you can enroll in the lab. Your school might have something similar going on?

Who requires a foreign language?

What?? Since when is Biochem a REQUIREMENT??? A foreign language????

And I didn't take biology 2 because I was studying abroad and they didn't have a comparable course. However i did take Genetics, Cell Bio and Microbiology.
Am I ok?

Being abroad has nothing to do with it - Biol 2 with lab is a pre-req - so I do not think you are "OK" on this one.

Biochem is required by a small handful of schools - check the MSAR., but verify pre reqs on each school's website for absolute certainty...as for a foreign lang, I have not come across that one yet, so I don't know...

I thought cell bio was usually considered bio II. Biochem is a requirement for some, but the minority of schools. However, if you can take it, you should. Lots of schools look at it as a good predictor and feel having it once makes it much easier later. As far as organic lab, I know Penn State only offers one, two credit lab that with two, three credit lectures makes the eight that is required by many schools. Most take the lab along with the second lecture.

just take ORG I and II with labs then there is no question to deal with.

Biochemistry is a requirement for some schools. You are correct, a foreign language is not...should remove that one, though schools would like you take one as do many degree programs.

I have never heard that one.

To the other poster: I would make damn sure about Biol 2 (plus lab) no matter what anybody says at your school - might want to ask some med schools about it directly if you are getting conflicting info...I have read on SDN examples of PhDs who, despite having all kinds of upper level and grad bio/chem classes, still are required to take the pre reqs like everybody else...

The only widely accepted substitute for the Biol 1/2 sequence is Zoology, but not many people seem to go that route.

If I remember correctly, doesn't UCLA like their students to know Spanish, for their patient population? I don't think it is required though.

At my University, we have Organic 1 lecture (3 cr) , Organic 2 lecture (3 cr), and a whole class of Organic Lab (4 cr). Usually students take Lab with Organic 2. This is just at my school.

Also, my school has a 1 semester, higher level Biology, which is what I did. So for my second semester, my adviser is saying the best thing I can take is Physiology for the MCAT.

Yikes I'm never going to be done with pre-reqs. I already graduated and keep taking pre-reqs. I'm never going to be able to get a job to pay for med school if I ever get in. 🙁

^--nope, only two quarters of labs are required, not three.

i am going to assume it is not a big deal because i have a ton of friends who have followed that exact curriculum and gone to a lot of medical schools.

that is what my premed advisor told me to take as well, and they work directly with the adcoms at OSU med school.

I know this question was asked 7 years ago, but does anyone from recent cycles know for sure if medical schools require Organic Chemistry 2 lab?

Thanks!

It's still required, yes.

Its only required if they specifically say or go 2 lab is required. Or if 8 credits is required and your school does not give any combination of 8 credits between orgo 1 lecture, orgo 2 lecture, and orgo 1 lab.

Gotcha thanks. I think I'll go ahead and complete it in order to just cover all bases, since I'm sure each school may vary on their requirements

I would create darn positive regarding Biol A pair of regardless of the anyone says at the institution.
