Is shafowing considered volunteer work?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm just trying to get it straight because I'm currently shadowing a DO but I'm not sure if it falls under the volunteer category.

Thank you
No, it falls under the "shadowing" category.

Most of the time you are actually making it harder for the physician to do their job because they are trying to explain things to you. Definitely not volunteering

Yep. Shadowing is for your benefit - not the benefit of others.

OP be sure to thank any physician that lets you shadow for the opportunity. It's a privilege, not a favor for anyone but yourself.

Thanks for the insight. I'm going to start volunteering at a hospital soon.

You don't necessarily have to volunteer at a hospital, but that is great.

Hospices, nursing homes, Big Brother/Big Sisters, Boys&Girls Club, food banks, free clinics, community involvements, etc etc all are in desperate need of volunteers

I just wish to address this in the manner it deserves.

No, unfortunately it does not fall under the category of volunteering. There are a few different things to look out for when considering if something is volunteering:

  1. Are you being paid?
  2. Is it benefiting anyone but yourself?
  3. Are you truly doing something?
The correct answers should be no, yes, and yes, respectively, to be considered volunteering. As shadowing brings a "no" to requirements #2 and #3, it doesn't fall under the volunteering category.

To the other posters above: I am thankful for those of you who at least gave a simple "No" or "No and here's why." I am, however, disheartened by the many comments that are just making fun of the OP. Sometimes people just don't have experience. It does happen. That's why quite a few of us are here.

Anyway. Good luck with your volunteering, OP! I'm sure it will all work out.

Thanks, I appreciate your input and your viewpoint. I was taught that if I didn't have anything beneficial to say then just keep to myself but not everyone abides by that rule. Thanks again all.
