so I have a star celebrity as a patient. I asked him if I can take a picture with him and he agreed and consented. Is it a violation if I post the pic on facebook without saying he's my patient?

Its not worth it.

Because of your role as a medical student, someone may infer that the celebrity is being treated for a medical condition.

Students have faced disciplinary action for what is posted on their FB page. All you need is someone, even a friend, to complain.

HIPAA regulates any identifiable information, including photographs, about a person. It may not be released without written consent from the patient/celebrity.

well, it depends, actually. Is said picture of you both in non-doctor/hospital clothes in a non-medical environment? Then sure go for it. If there's anything medical in the picture, you could easily get in trouble.

Just because you take the pic doesn't mean you have to actually post it...

I wouldn't do it. Things like this have a way of making back to student affairs which leads to undue hardship for you.

Get written consent stating that it is OK for you to share the picture on facebook. Or just keep it on your phone/camera and show it to people in person, although the paranoid people out there likely think it will get you a HIPAA (not HIPPA like a HIPPO) violation.

Do you want to risk loosing everything you worked for the past few years for a few "likes"? Not worth it, students have been screwed over by less.

my brain just exploded because of how stupid and attention starved this is. not to mention you shouldn't have taken a picture of him already, and by the way you need written consent not verbal.

but ya please post it, this idiocy should get you kicked out which is probably a good thing.

when it comes to ethics and the hip... if you have to ask, the answer is probably to not do it.

Not only is it a stupid risk, but don't you think that's just a tad unprofessional?

But now the world will be deprived of the knowledge that this med student came into contact with one of the immortals, and may have had such greatness rub off on them.

Don't wash your hands whatever you do OP

Bad, bad idea. Are you in a hospital setting in the photo? Are you wearing a white coat? Even professional attire will give you away as probably most people who would see it could look up what you do. If you answered no...I still wouldn't do it.

I can't believe you were shameless enough to ask for a picture.

doctor > celebrity > starfu***r
